The Strategy and Policy Department at the Naval War College is one of the leading centers for the
teaching and study of strategy. Long recognized for its innovative curriculum and widespread influence
on the study of strategy, the Strategy and Policy Department offers a challenging interdisciplinary
education on strategy for students from all military services, government agencies, and officers from over 100 countries. The Department has a multidisciplinary faculty that works as a team to present an exciting course that synthesizes strategic theory, historical case studies, and their application to pressing policy and strategy problems.
Strategy and Policy: The position falls in the Strategy and Policy (S&P) Department under the Dean of Academics. The strategy courses use strategic theory, the history of war (on land and at sea), and an examination of current-day conflicts to develop critical analytical skills for understanding the
interrelationship of policy aims, strategy, and military operations. The interdisciplinary nature of the
strategy courses requires that faculty members develop a breadth of knowledge well beyond their primary area of specialization. Additional details regarding the Naval War College and the Strategy and Policy Department curriculum can be obtained by visiting the Naval War College website at:
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include teaching seminars in both the College’s intermediate-level
core course in strategy and the senior-level core course in strategy, conducting research, engaging in other service of benefit to the College, and participating in outreach activities. Maximum teaching load is a 0- 2-2 during the academic year, excluding an optional elective course. The candidate may also assist with related programs at the College. Anticipated starting date is August 2018.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. or have defended their dissertation at the time of
appointment. The Department seeks candidates with significant scholarly attainment or potential,
teaching experience, and particular expertise in the fields of war studies, international relations,
international security affairs, political economy, regional studies, diplomatic and international
history, or naval and military history. Areas of particular interest to the Department include
Asia, the Greater Middle East, cyber warfare/strategy, and naval/maritime studies.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining a Department of Defense security clearance at
the SECRET level.
Salary Considerations: Salary is competitive and includes health insurance, paid vacation, and sick
leave. Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials in accordance with the Department of the Navy Faculty Schedule.
