Dr. Rebecca Abergel to Join Berkeley Nuclear Engineering
Dr. Rebecca Abergel will join the Department of Nuclear Engineering as an Assistant Professor, beginning January 1, 2018.
Dr. Abergel received her Ph.D. in the area of Inorganic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. From 2007 to 2009, she was a postdoctoral associate at the University of California, Berkeley Department of Chemistry and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She was subsequently hired as a Project Scientist in 2009. Dr. Abergel is currently a Staff Scientist and the Career Development and Diversity Officer in the Chemical Sciences Division, as well as the Deputy Director of the Institute for Resilient Communities of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL); she also leads and manages the LBNL’s Heavy Element Decorporation and Biological Chemistry programs.
Dr. Abergel is a world-renowned scientist with proven research, leadership, and mentoring skills, representing an excellent match for the NE Department's long range strategic goals. In addition, she will fill a nationally-recognized gap in the education of the next-generation of nuclear forensics experts with deep knowledge about actinide chemistry and its relevance for nuclear security and safety, as well as importance for radiobiological effects. She is acknowledged as an emerging star in the field of actinide biology and will help the NE Department and UC Berkeley to lead in this expanding research field. Her appointment provides a unique opportunity to enhance collaborations within the Department and the University as whole, as well as with other universities, national laboratories, and industry.
Welcome Professor Abergel!
