Bookmarks for Darren 'Gav' Bleuel
This is the master list of every place I've seen fit to bookmark, whether for my purposes or for yours. Many are likely outdated and "linkrotted." Use only as misdirected
Cool Stuff
Widgets
- Where's George
- <img alt="The Electric Postcard Store" src="http://postcards.www.media.mit.edu/Postcards/PostCardPix/POButton.gif">
- This is still a fun thing... Everyone loves a postcard! One of the first sites I ever visited, and the first site I ever bookmarked.
- Trendy Interactive Magic
- How'd they do that? Seriously, this can freak you out until you figure it out...
- Welcome to MapBlast!
- MapQuest! Welcome!
- A map of everything on earth! Quick, too. Precisely the sort of thing you'd like to see on the internet.
- The Brunching Shuttlecocks | Toys
- New toys added all the time! A popular favorite: "Porn Star or My Little Pony?"
Internet Games and such
- Yahoo! Games
- Lots of card games, though, disappointingly, no seven card stud. The general rumor is that this site is the reason why the web surfers at Yahoo never update the Yahoo Directory anymore.
- The Bingo Zone
- Yeah, how fun can bingo on the web really be? But you can actually win a small sum of money, so how does that pump your crankcase?
- Games Domain
- They make many claims as to being the most popular Games site on the web. Maybe if they say it enough, it'll come true?
- JavaGammon Home
- Play a game of backgammon with someone you don't know.
- COSMIC ENCOUNTER ONLINE
- This is a pretty cool geeky board game, and if I had time, I'm sure I'd find it's pretty cool and geeky to play online.
- Story Resources available on the Web
- A list of story-related sites
- (The Spider's Web) Fun and Games
- A really really long list of interesting stuff on the web, either game related or (arguably) just "fun."
- Welcome to Lemonade Stand
- Well the game is about 20 years old, but most of the good ones are, anyway.
- GHOST: Home Page
- Play a word game against even more people you don't know.
- THE RIDDLER HOME PAGE
- Lots of expensive prizes used to go out regularly to the people who waste every waking moment on the internet solving puzzles and riddles. Now all this place is good for is a good java crossword puzzle.
- Magic: The Gathering
- I said it was just a fad, but then people thought the Rubik's Cube would be popular forever, too, didn't they?
- Avalon: The Legend Lives
- It sounds cool on paper, but I'ven't had the chance to really check it out yet.
- Zarf's List of Interactive Games on the Web
- This used to be the penultimate of games lists, until Java came along and made internet games easy. Still, for some reason, people copy this site for their own web pages, even though the author abandoned it years ago.
Comic Strips/Books
- I don't get a newspaper, so I have to read my favorite strips this way:
Web-based strips
- Nukees
- What is, by far, the *ahem* BEST comic strip in existance. Yes, it's mine. As seen in The Daily Californian.
- Sluggy Freelance
- The most popular web-based comic strip on earth, with something like two million hits per month. And it's actually very good, oddly enough.
- Bob the Angry Flower
- This is my absolute favorite comic strip in existance. Stephan Notley is a brilliant humorist, which really irks me because now I have work harder to make my strip funnier out of shame. It was a lot eaiser when I was only competing with "The Family Circus."
- College Roomies from Hell!!! a daily online comic strip
- The Class Menagerie
- An excellent anthropomorphic strip about college life, with very engaging characters, the author of which went to my college so I can relate. I think I have a crush on Lisa, even though she's a real dog.
- Freefall Index
- I'm actually very impressed at how good this strip has been, considering the main cast is only three characters, the strip seems to be drawn entirely on a computer, and it's been over a year and they still haven't gotten off the planet.
- <IMG ALT="Space Moose" SRC="pics/smnow.gif">
- Space Moose is an awesome strip that is practically designed to offend. What is it about Edmonton that produces such great cartoonists?
- Surf Rat & Spencer Comic Strips-full color comics daily
- More than any other comic strip, this one takes fullest advantage of the internet as a comic medium, adding full color, motion, etc. He is also recreating every scene of "Star Wars" in comic strip form. My favorite of those "Surf Wars" is the "I need more quarters!" strip.
- PvP -Version 2.0
- World's Widest Comic Strip
- This is one of my favorite Surf Rat cartoons.
- Lilly Mouse!
- Swell Comics
- Salon Comics|
- Kevin & Kell
- The second most popular comic strip on the web, by the author of not one, but TWO syndicated strips.
- Small World
- Absurd Notions
- Simple concepts, intelligent humor.
- Sabrina Online, the Comic Strip!
- A cute skunk that half the internet is obssessed with. Only updates once a month.
- Ozy and Millie
- Helen: Sweetheart of the Internet
- Also a very popular title, currently on hiatus. Helen has good points and bad points (she is the arch-nemesis of Space Moose, I believe).
Syndicated

Beer Related
- Shea and Darren's Beer Critique
- Positively the most unbiased, objective viewpoints around.
- THE BEER GUIDE
- A large guide to beer sites on the web. Sites like this are the reason I think people like me shouldn't bother making beer link lists.
- Barclays Restaurant
- This is a local pub near me that rotates their beer stock through over 900 different beers and gives stuff away to members who drink enough (25 club, 50 club, 100 club, etc...)
- NICHOLSON WALL OF BEER Home Page
- This is a guy who, like Shea and me, seeks out beers he's never had before. The difference is that he keeps his empty bottles when he's done in his garage. He has over a thousand.
- Beer Me!
- Another "lush like us." He drinks and rates (over 4000 beers!), but unlike us, has fairly straight-laced reviews. He used to sell T-Shirts and CD-Roms, but somehow I guess there wasn't so much of a market.
- Molecular Expressions: The Beershots Photo Gallery
- Take a REALLY close look at your beer.
- Bellaholics: The Heart of Intoxication
- A group of sots in D.C. trying to incorporate a leisurely pasttime.
Death and dismemberment
- TSD's April Fools Extreme Suspension
- Do ya like babies?! Do ya like suspending from your nipple rings?!
- Nuclear Blast Mapper
- This was my idea! Guess I got beat to it. Check the blast radius of a nuclear explosion in your neighborhood.
- Stick Figure Death Theatre
- Simply beautiful.
- Assassin - The Game Where you Kill Celebrities
- I can't really add to that.
- Church of Euthanasia Home Page
- Finally a cause I can endorse... This site includes the next bookmark, a very useful essay:
- Butchering the Human Carcass
- The Death Clock
- Are you morbid enough to appreciate a clock that counts down the number of seconds until your death?
- Recent Earthquakes for SF_Bay
- Natural disasters are one of my hobbies. It helps to live in California.
- The Scorched Earth Party
- Finally, a cause we can all get behind... Well, read their philosophy and you'll see why I'd rather be behind them than in front of them.
- BME: Body Modification Ezine
- Not for the queasy. Something for me to shoot for.
- Autopsy How To
- A neat guide on how to perform an autopsy, complete with nifty cartoons that you can watch animated!
- The Darwin Awards Archive
- It's good to see that someone is fact checking this stuff... Well, actually, they aren't doing a very good job catagorizing anything that happened more than a year ago.
- Darwin Awards Official Home Page
- This one's "OFFICIAL" which means that they didn't get the Domain Name first. Why they are official and no one else can be is beyond me, especially since the Darwin Awards has about seventeen different origins.
- Marshmallow Bunny Survival Tests
- How much can a spongy bunny take?
- Precious moments...
- As my friend Eric (who sent me this link as found by his wife, Emily) described: "Perhaps the sickest collection of photos ever published on the web. Truly disgusting and foul. It's got a bit of everything: beastiality, skin grafts, bot fly wounds, festering pustules, suicide photos."
Bitterness and Spite
- The Misanthropic Bitch
- Finally, someone who thinks as I do! I think I'm in love.
- Cruel Site of the Day
- Griper Magazine - Sex * Satire * Smarm
- CynicalBastards.com
- Heartless Bitches International
- A bunch of loser women, most of whom have no idea what being a Bitch is all about. Take a lesson from my Misanthropic hero, chickies. If you need to make it a cheesy anagram to remember what you are, you aren't.
- ANSWER Me! Archives
- These guys take misanthropy way too far... I appreciate that.
- MBSP: Witches, Bitches, and Crazy Ladies
- Another tirade from someone who needed to be beaten over the head to get it.
Fan Sites
- Ma Page de Tori Amos
- There are hundreds of Tori Amos sites, but this is a good one and it'll get you started on the "Tori Ring" to find others.
- A Dent In The Tori Amos Net Universe
- Another Tori Amos page, but this one has a link to my Nukees comic! I didn't even tell them about it, but a week after I put it on the web, they found it! Now THESE are fans!
- Tori Amos - Bootleg Discography
- I think you can figure out what's here.
- @Natalie: Main Page
- One of many Natalie sites, but this guy seems to be the best. See if you can find my Natalie drawing.
- Official Space Ghost (C2C) site
- Best talk show on the planet. Too bad they had to ruin it with the "Ghost Planet" cartoon show.
- Beakman's World Home Page
- I just can't get interested in Beakman anymore, since his second sidekick, Liza, was replaced.
- SchoolHouse Rock
- Still cool, depite having been officially declared cool.
Potentially Rewarding
- National Associated of Unclaimed Property Administrators
- Millions of people nationwide are owed money that never got to them, like lost checks, inheiritances, refunds, etc. When the money or property can't find the person to whom it's owed, the state takes control. You can see if you are owed money in any of the 50 states on this list.
- CyberGold
- Now HERE, you actually get paid for going to different corporate sites. Unfortunately, there are only a few total sites for you to select from. Since you only get 50 cents to a dollar per site you can't get rich here. Usually, you have to buy something to get paid, which defeats the whole point.
- $urf Pay- Get Paid To Surf The Net!
- You don't really get paid, but you get entered into nebulous contests for going to web sites
- HeyIdiot.com
- Invest in an internet company that is guaranteed to make you money.
- The Free Site
- I haven't really looked around here, but it's supposed to have links to everything free they can find.
- $95,093.16 made easy
- How to legally make money and make powerful enemies by depositing junk mail checks.
Music, Professor!
- The List
- The holy word for funk-punk-thrash-ska music in the San Francisco Bay Area. Updates every week.
- Concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area
- Again, exactly the sort of thing I've always wanted to see on the internet. Useful free information.
- OLGA (Guitar Arcive)
- Now if I only owned a guitar, I could justify listing this site...
- Welcome to Musicmaker
- Buy CDs on the web. Pretty basic. They give a lot of web coupons and discounts and things, but unfortunately, it involves being on their mailing list.
- nucast - Web Jockey
- Cool idea, but I don't think it really works in practice.
MP3 Sites
- I won't be providing descriptions for most of these sites, since they pop in and out of existance so quickly. It isn't worth it.

Reading is fun for mentals
- Gav and Peloso's Interactive Story
- My most popular site. One branching story, tens of thousands of episodes written by people just like you.
- fear my pituitary
- Indescribable.
- Tarzan's Tripes Forever, and Other Feghoots
- Hundreds of familiar stories, each described by the web site as, "a long-drawn-out circumstantial story concerning an inconsequential happening that impresses the teller as humorous but the hearer as boring and pointless." Sounds fun, don't it?
- StorySprawl
- A story site like mine, but where the webmaster is a much more dedicated programmer.
- Literary Kicks
- A non-linear examination of the heros of the Beat Generation.
- The Word Wizard
- Geeky word games, if I remember correctly.
- Pakin's auto complaint-letter generator

- Storytelling&WWW
- A strange intellectual pursuit.
- Kevin's Oddly Different Story Time
- I suggest "Curious George and the High-Tension Power Line."
"New" Science
- Mach's Principle and Impulse Engines
- My newest scientific obsession. The origin of inertia and how you can abuse the equations of general relativity to create propellantless propulsion.
- The Origin of Inertia
- More of the same. I don't know why I never learned this in my physics classes. It doesn't require a knowledge of general relativity, just the equations of fundamental electromagnetics
- Subject index of Alternate View columns by John G. Cramer
- Never trust anyone who says they have an "alternate view," but you should always hear them out.
- Robokoneko
- Awesome project, the ROBOKITTEN! These guys are creating the first artificially intelligent lifeform, a robotic kitten with an evolutionarily-grown neural net brain.
- Dr. Garis' Webpage
- This is the guy in charge of the Robokitten, and I provide this link simply because there are no links to further information on that project from the Robokoneko page.
- Break Through Propulsion Physics
- This guy has a pretty cool job. He works for NASA, thinking up and researching Star Trek technology and trying to figure out what we can get away with in this universe.
- Teleportation
- For when you absolutely, positively need that photon on the other side of the room faster than the speed of light.
- The "Einstein Hoax"
- Believers in the Ether. Bizarre. Note sure if this should be under the "Conspiracies" catagory or the "Weirdness" catagory.
- Conference on the Fundamental Structure and Mechanisms of the Universe
- Particle Beam Physics Laboratory Quantum Information Page
- Use quantum tunneling to build faster than light computers... Someday...
- abstract gr-qc/9905084
- A paper from Los Alamos on a warp drive that doesn't require more energy than exists in the universe.
- Nikola Tesla
- Okay, it's not "new" science, but this guy is my hero. He's the world's first and probably only true mad scientist, and lots of his ideas are considered "new" science today.
Geeky Stuff
- 3-D Starmaps

- The VIM (Vi IMproved) Home Page
- The editor, vi, just wasn't enough like emacs, so they made vim.

- Computer Virus Myths home page
- Everything you've ever gotten in email is made up. I can say that with 99.9% certainty. This site tells you how many of those virus warnings you're always getting aren't true. I'll give you a hint: All of them. Look for my comic strip, Nukees, on this site.

Conspiracies
- Coalition to Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide

- HAARP
- Project HAARP: The Pentagon's provocative plan to superheat the earth's ionosphere
- Dysson Story, Pg.1
- Now this is scary, and it was played out on a Monty Python cast member, which makes me wonder if it happened at all, which brings us back to the catagory title.
- Tobacco Resolution
- The sneakiest way for the tobacco companies to comply with the disclosure laws is to publish every foolscrap of nonsense ever written about cigarettes in the past 100 years.

- "Losing 3 Days in each Earth rotation has retarded your mentality to stupid and an Education of Evil!" Hee hee. Whose mentality has been retarded to stupid?
Personal Pages I like
- Gnat Mark I v2.0
- Self-described "perky goth." She might be the world's perfect girl, or incredably annoying in person. I give each 50-50 odds. Cool-ass page idea, though. If only I could really purchase one from my local Gnat Outlet Mall.
- The Garden of Eden
- A true geek obsessed with pi. Okay, so I may have memorized 101 digits, but she's worse!
Interesting references to my pages
- Following are all pages who mentioned one of my pages in an official capacity (ie: an E-Zine, a review, or a news article)
- NATURE: Alien Empire - Replicators
- They used an excerpt from a cheesy poem of mine. The funny part is the introduction:
"Scientists, however, aren't the only ones keeping a close eye on mayflies. Poets, too, have become captivated by their
sweet, short lives. The California poet Darren "Gav" Bleuel, for instance, had this to say about the insects:"
They obviously didn't know I'm a nuclear physicist.

- The New Unfettered Beach Head
- By far, the strangest environment of links amongst which I've ever been listed.
- Space Station Appreciation

- A pretty cool review of my comic strip. I especially like the line, "Nukees started out as a very, very crudely drawn strip and has advanced to being a fairly crudely drawn strip."
- Audrey Steinhauer
- This truly is, as the catagory suggests, an interesting reference to my web page.
