Until May 1995 I was a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley. I have a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering and another Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering. It isn't a dual degree program, each MS was earned separately. My thesis topic was Calculation of Tritiated Water Flow though Desert Soil Vadose Zone. I am one of the few people you will ever meet with the words 'Nuclear Detonation Cavity' on their resume.

I had a hard time getting a job. Basically all the nuclear companies thought that I was an environmental engineer, while all the environmental companies thought that I was a nuclear engineer. Between Oct. 1994 and Sept. 1995 I sent out 295 resumes without getting a job. Fortunately I eventually got a job working for the Department of Defense, looking at foreign nuclear weapons capabilities. I know that this sound cool, but I did mostly political science stuff and I was not very happy about that. I did get to hear a lot of really interesting stuff and I am really up on current events. After about two years of this though, I became unsatisfied and started looking for a new job, one that was actually in the environmental field. Again, I found the job market to be really bad. Most people weren't interested in someone with weapons experience. I sent out another 182 resumes before finally getting a job with the non-profit company Mitretek. At Mitretek, I work with federal agencies developing decontamination plans for leftover US chemical weapons.

Gav (of Interactive Story fame) is currently producing a comic strip for the UC student paper. It deals with the life and times of the UC graduate nuclear engineering department and is called "Nukees". I figure if I put a link to it, he may include me in a future episode.
