IdentiFinder

Dear BRAWM. Can you tell us what you know about the IdentiFinder gamma spectroscopy instrument? Accuracy? Comparison to lab testing?

It is supposed to be an instrument that measures radiation and tells you the isotope, and costs about $15K. Thanks.

Black box

I have never used that instrument, but I am familiar with the type of detector material it uses. What is the particular application you have in mind?

A brief word of caution I have is that there is no perfect "black box" when it comes to radioisotope identification. It takes a while to learn how to use a unit like this effectively in the field.

Thank you

Thanks for your response - much appreciated and thank you for all the wonderful technical answers in the past year. Hoping you're getting a great thesis or dissertation out of this all!

Anyhow, I understand what you mean about no perfect black box, but an "ok" black box to give a good indication of cesium (and perhaps other radionuclides) would work. As I'm understanding it, the unit is a spectrometer though not as good of a spectrometer as you would have in a lab - but close enough.

I am seeking something more than a geiger counter or converter to uSv/hr, i.e. qualification in addition to quantification without having to send to a lab. I would cross-check samples with a lab, if a sample gave an alarming reading. I am seeking a relatively inexpensive way to do this (if you consider $15K is inexpensive when one wants to check many locations and materials).
