Milk update (2/6/2012)

2/6/2012 (2:31pm): A new milk sample has been measured, this one with a best-by date of 2/16/2012. The results are posted to the milk sample page. Low levels of both Cs-134 and Cs-137 were still detected in the sample.

Latest milk sample testing

Hi. I thought the ratio of Cs-134 to Cs-137 was 1:1 for cesium originating in Fukushima. The latest sample result reported on 2/6/12 had a ratio of 1:2. How do you explain that?
Thanks.

The ratio of Cs-134 and Cs-137 in the latest milk sample testing

I thought the ratio of Cs-134 to Cs-137 was 1:1 for cesium originating in Fukushima. The latest test result shows the ratio of 1:2. How would you explain that?
Thank you.

Thoughts on ratio

Two reasons for the difference-

1) The Cs-134 from Fukushima is coming up on it's birthday. That means that levels will be about 75% of the original 1:1 ratio (bear in mind that Cs-134 has ~2 yr half life)...so the expected ratio is getting to be about .75 parts Cs-134 to 1 part Cs-137. That's a little rough but close.

2) Margin of error allowed is shown as +/-, this could account for some difference as well.

and maybe 3) - Potentially, there could have been a very small amount of Cs-137 in the milk pre-Fuku. It is well established that there is Cs-137 in the food chain from prior to this current catastrophe.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Half-life of Cs-134 changing the ratio of Fukushima cesium with time is a good point.

Just In: Highest level of

Just In: Highest level of radioactive cesium in San Francisco-area milk since August 2011 — Now at 150% of EPA’s maximum contaminant limit.

Really disgusting to see such high levels not only hanging around but increasing.

Not over EPA drinking water limits

This sample was not over the EPA limits. This has been explained already with the previous two milk samples. Please see this thread.

What is really disgusting....

What is really disgusting is that enews keeps promulgating this blatant propaganda.

They've been informed about this - with references to Mark's postings.

However, they keep doing it - LIE, LIE, LIE!!!

The scientific truth doesn't matter when you have a political agenda to push.

Agree.

I watch enenews, but always with a shaker full of salt. Definitely low signal to noise. And I loathe the way they always tweak the headlines to make everything look as bad a possible, and how for damned near a year they have quoted that Forbes article that mixes up the FDA MCL - using a number that should be stated in bq/L instead as pCi/L and making it look like the Cs-134/137 level is over legal when it is well below.

Although I am not sure if they are driven so much by agenda or just fear. That I understand to some extent.

Ditto - JMS

I haven't posted in a long while but I too want to thank you guys for the continued work that is being done. I know everyone has their own opinion about what everything actually means, but at least you are giving us numbers to consider and helping us to make decisions for our own families, instead of having to rely on just the news. It's hard to imagine it's been almost a year, but as one of those who found your site literally days after the initial event, Thank You.

You're welcome, JMS.  Thanks
