Drinking 5 gallons of milk per month

Assuming that someone drinking the same milk "BRAWM" has tested and has been consuming 1.25 gallons of this milk per week, or 5 gallons per month, since the Fukushima radiation hit the U.S. west coast. What is the cumulative radiation exposure for this average person over these last 6+ months?
Please spare us any plane flight analogies, im looking for numbers, thanks...

The way to calculate dose is

The way to calculate dose is given on this page, where we've shown an example and the conversion factors used. I thought this was an interesting example, and threw the numbers into a spreadsheet and added them all up. Long story short, if you were drinking the same milk that we tested at 5 gallons a month, the total dose is 0.094 millirem (+/- .003).

All the numbers I used were from our dose calculation page and the milk results page, so anyone can do a similar calculation.

Tim - I took this a litle

Tim - I took this a litle further. If someone drank that same milk for a year (assuming the same average level of contamination as has been seen during the first 6 months) they would be exposed to twice the number you quote - 0.188 millirem.

Normal, natural internal exposure from ingested sources (food/water) is figured to be an average of 31 millirem. This DOES NOT include radon/thoron, cosmic rays, etc - just ingested K-40, C-14, uranium, thorium, etc. So looking at the 0.188 millirem increase, that's a 0.6% increase in ingested radioactivity.

Pretty darned small increase.

about 20 minutes on a plane

about 20 minutes on a plane at altitude...

are you sure that wouldn't

are you sure that wouldn't be the equivalent dose of standing next to the milk for 5 months, and not actually drinking it? Since you don't know how long I or anyone else is going to live, how in GOD'S GREEN EARTH can science accept this analogy?

Banana Equivalent Dose

Dr. Chivers continues with the infamous HOT airplane ride analogy.

So, what is the Banana Equivalent Dose (BED)?

at least I'm consistent. ;)

Apples N Oranges

*

My favorite radioative jokes are the Airline Gammas equivalents for Neutron exposure as well as internal Alpha & Beta dosing.

How many apples does it take to equal an orange?

Tell us another ...

I think you can just get

I think you can just get BRAWM's data, make the average per month and multiply by something like 19 to get the number of total becquerels. Then use ICRP or any other institution coefficients and multiply again to get the estimated internal dose.

High five, dude.

Good question.
