5.9 Earthquake in Virginia near Nuke Plant
This story says the reactors were automatically taken offline by safety equipment:

This story says the quake "knocked out power" but the reactors were shut down manually without incident.

Did you all know there were reactors on a fault line in VA? Does anybody care about that? It's only 20miles from the epicenter.

Close call floods/ earthquake/ what's the next test hurricane/s
Dominion spokesman Jim Norvelle said the plant was designed to withstand an earthquake of up to 6.2 in magnitude.
But some experts expressed concern about the narrow margin between the design metrics and the quake's size.
"It was uncomfortably close to design basis," said Edwin Lyman of the Union of Concerned Scientists, which has pushed for stronger nuclear regulations.
"If Fukushima wasn't a wake-up call, this really needs to be to get the NRC and industry moving to do seismic reviews of all the nuclear power plants in the country."
Tuesday's quake, which was felt along the East Coast as far north as Canada, was the region's largest since a 5.9 quake hit New York State in 1944.
North Anna's reactors are among 27 east of the Rockies that the NRC highlighted during a seismic review last year as presenting a potential hazard, due to the amount of ground-shaking they were designed to withstand.
Twelve other nuclear plants along the Eastern Seaboard declared an "unusual event" following the quake, the lowest of the NRC's emergency classification ratings. North Anna's "alert" status is one step further up on a four-step U.S. emergency scale."

It turns out that the U.S.
It turns out that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has calculated the odds of an earthquake causing catastrophic failure to a nuclear plant here. Each year, at the typical nuclear reactor in the U.S., there's a 1 in 74,176 chance of an earthquake strong enough to cause damage to the reactor's core, which could expose the public to radiation. No tsunami required. That's 10 times more likely than you winning $10,000 by buying a single ticket in the Powerball multistate lottery, where the chance is 1 in 723,145.

The thing about the lotto is, you have to play to win.
10 percent for tsnumi risk
"When Tokyo Electric President Masataka Shimizu apologized to the people of Japan for the continuing crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant he called the double disaster "marvels of nature that we have never experienced before".
But a review of company and regulatory records shows that Japan and its largest utility repeatedly downplayed dangers and ignored warnings -- including a 2007 tsunami study from Tokyo Electric Power Co's senior safety engineer.
"We still have the possibilities that the tsunami height exceeds the determined design height due to the uncertainties regarding the tsunami phenomenon," Tokyo Electric researchers said in a report reviewed by Reuters.
The research paper concluded that there was a roughly 10 percent chance that a tsunami could test or overrun the defenses of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant within a 50-year span based on the most conservative assumptions."

While no damage, injuries,
While no damage, injuries, or deaths has been reported at the moment there is one thing the media is being suspiciously quiet about.
The epicenter of the quake Mineral Virginia, which is the location of the Anna Nuclear Power Plant.
According MSNBC, the plant was among the list of nuclear power plants at most risk to suffer core damage from an earthquake.
In fact the list, compiled from NRC data, showed that the Anna nuclear plant was the 7th most likely reactor to suffer core damage with a 1 in 22,727 chance of being struck by an earthquake based on 2008 geological data.

Are these issues somehow related?
I just posted this on another thread (about the radioactive silver found in CA), but this actually fits better here:
When reviewing EPA RADNET last night, I saw a huge spike in beta counts in Harrisonburg, VA in early August. Can these incidents somehow be related? Can anyone help connect the dots?
Was North Anna possibly already experincing problems prior to today's earthquake? And what the heck is this HAARP thing everyone keeps talking about? (They claim it is supposed to cause earthquakes???) If this were possible, who the heck would want to cause an earthquake near a nuclear power plant for goodness sake???
For some strange reason, the word "insanity" keeps coming to mind the more I read about all of this stuff. Have we in fact lost our minds? When are we going to say, "Enough is ENOUGH." Please think about our children! Stop this madness NOW.
is a quake-rattled nuke
is a quake-rattled nuke plant just a couple hours from capitol hill FINALLY enough evidence that we need to end this method of energy creation once and for all?
Good question. Answer:

"Update : Luckily there is only a 2.8 aftershock so far.
Update : A lot of buildings were evacuated everywhere where the shaking was fierce. This was also the case in Washington DC
Update : 2 Nuclear reactors have been halted after the Virginia quake. The Nuclear reactors at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County are rather close to the epicenter. the Power plants were automatically taken off-line by the plants safety systems. The NRC is sending inspectors to the plant to find out whether everything is OK. We do estimate that the distance from the power plants to the epicenter is 20 miles.
Update : The earthquake was even felt until Ontario Canada
Update :The earthquake was felt in Washington, New York City, North Carolina...."

one of the diesel backup generators failed, but that's ok, because 3 are still working. everywhere else is reporting that all 4 generators are working.
Whoever was supposed to
Whoever was supposed to maintain that failed generator should be tarred and feathered. Seriously, it is a diesel generator, not the space shuttle, right?
Sheriff spokeswoman said
Sheriff spokeswoman said non-emergency personnel at North Anna were evacuated. Dominion sent out a tweet saying the plant was NOT evacuated.
Anyone care to follow up with Dominion first about why they lied, and second about when the workers will return?
I have to say that all of
I have to say that all of these junk NPP's should have triple redundant safety systems.
Or better yet, mothball them and let's suck it up.
or just a good evacuation
or just a good evacuation plan

To hell with an evacuation
To hell with an evacuation plan. The only way to win this game is to not play it.
just being sarcastic. you
just being sarcastic. you really should read the plan intro. it basically tries to say nukes are safe because coal has killed more people, then goes on to suggest that it's as much on you to survive an emergency as it is on the nuke plant. i really do hope this wasn't created by dominion, but it looks like it was, or at least was created by someone on their behalf.
