Cesium to Begin Falling on Pacific NW States

Japan's burning of radioactive waste which will release Cesium into the atmosphere will get deposited on Oregon and Washington.
http://www.fairewinds.com/content/new-data-supports-previous-fairewinds-...
This is really unfortunate not only for the health of the people living there, but will further contaminate some of the previously cleanest drinking water in the country.
Burning of radioactive waste in this country is illegal, but I suppose the IAEA will say it's safe. Will UCB also say it's safe?

Help please!!

This is terrible. Everyone, take a look at this blog

www.newsforyourfamily.blogspot.com

Look under August to begin. FDA.Fukushima, then go to the 60 Minutes Video, and Corporate Responses. IT IS RIDICULOUS!! FDA is allowing sourcing of raw ingredients for OUR FOOD SUPPLY from around there!!

Because of no country of origin labeling, we have no idea where it is all going. PLEASE ENCOURAGE EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND LOVE TO SHARE THE BLOG AND SIGN THE PETITION. PLEASE HELP!! Every time someone signs no matter where they are in the country, a note automatically goes to their reps on their behalf. If enough of these letters get to our reps, they will get the message it is time to change and put country of origin on the labels. That radiation will be around for years and years. Once we get to know where it is all going we can vote by leaving the things on the shelf that have ingredients from Japan in them. Obviously, the FDA is a politically run organization...Their motto is "Protecting Your Health" but there is no way in hell that getting ingredients from around Fukushima is protecting our health.. They are more concerned with keeping Japan's economy running, Please help by sharing the blog and encouraging all those you know and love to sign the petition!!! Our health is more important!!!

@UCB, you have these folks email. Can you share this info with all of them please. They deserve to know. Thank you.

re: Burning of radioactive waste in this country is illegal

For the record (and for reasons that mystify me), burning radioactive waste is apparently NOT illegal in this country. See the following story from this summer:

German radioactive waste OK'd for Tennessee
"Federal authorities have approved licenses allowing up to 1,000 tons of low-level radioactive waste from Germany to be brought to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for incineration...."
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/06/19/national/main20072417.shtml

Burning radioactive waste SHOULD be illegal, but sadly, it currently is not (at least not if it is considered "low-level").

We must get the law changed to stop this insanity.

Burning (l'legal') has not happend yet, AND YOU CAN STOP IT !

This is a simple matter for the State Department. It would be quite cleaver of someone would document a well framed rebuff from the EPA on this also.

Correspond with your congressional representatives and the Secretary of State.

Request a response. Failing a satisfactory reply ask your congressional representative how bombarding us with radiological waste is anything less than an act of war. A foreign government directing their 'hot potato' waste at the West Coast. Sounds like war.

A phone call and better yet a written response, yours to the gov, could make the difference.

I will use my voice. You too.

Burning of contaminated

Burning of contaminated waste has been happening for months already all over eastern Japan. Contaminated garbage, contaminated sludge from sewage facilities, etc...

What they are discussing now is what to do with the ashes. Until now, ashes containing under 8,000 Bq/Kg of radioactive cesium was allowed to be buried (not "burned"). Now they are going to increase that limit to 100,000 Bq/Kg. That is, anything under 100,000 Bq/kq is going to be buried according to some safety specifications. Anything over that would be treated in nuclear facilities.

For the old limit of 8,000 Bq/kg in ashes look here:
http://ajw.asahi.com/article/0311disaster/AJ201106292329

8,000 Bq is how much?

For some perspective, we can find out how much 8,000 Bq of Cs-137 is

when is this burning set to

when is this burning set to begin? When can the PNW expect to be hit?

Already happened.

It's already happened; for some time now. Still no sign of the radioactivity that all the "chicken littles" have been whining about.

what can we do to stop this ?

As time goes on, this nightmare is unfolding into one bigger and uglier monster.

What can we do to stop the burning of the waste ???

What about burning here?

We know there has been fallout here. How much and where may be debatable. But, many places in the USA burn their cut grass/tree trimmings and in some places even their trash.

We also have prescribed 'burns' of National Park lands here in California and elsewhere. (ie.. Sequoia Nat'l Park in Central California, right now!) I'll bet there is cesium on that underbrush. Some anyway, ...and guess what, we are again sending it airborne and passing it right on up and over to the east and on to Europe.

Our Federal Park Employees, who I have talked to, pretend like their is nothing happening. They get a lot of money and jobs because of 'funding' for the prescribed burns. They are either idiots or negligent. I am all for saving trees, but maybe we should pass on this procedure for the next 30 years or so.

Testing of the snow and water was done st some point in the mountains, but the figures are not back yet is what I've been told. How long can it take is my question and why were the fires set prior to having such data? (sound familiar)

ding ding ding... we have

ding ding ding... we have a winner

Your post should say that more cesium will be falling

Check out the forecasts from SERES
http://www.senes.ca/japan/forecasts.html
These don't even account for the burning and they only account for the "estimated" lower levels of radiation than is actually being emitted.
GLOW ON EVERYONE

Very interesting link,

Very interesting link, Anonymous. It will be interesting to cross check the "SERES" Japan forecasts with "weatherimages.org's" Japan jet stream forecasts to see how well the Japan to North America wind patterns for these two forecasters correlate.

Unsettling to say the least :-(

I saw this video today. It is very unsettling, to say the least. It doesn't seem like there is a centralized, solid plan in place, starting from the top people in government, or anyone who really has a handle on the best way to tackle the seriousness of this issue. I feel for them. The entire nation has gone though three simultaneous disasters (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster) affecting millions. Confusion and chaos must rule the day at this point. :-( But someone needs to help them create a solid, viable plan.

Whoever in the government who is allowing the burning of the radioactive materials must not understand that burning it doesn't cause the radioactivity to stop. As Arne states in the video, it just sends it airborne again and it gets redeposited elsewhere. Which means it will go whichever way the wind blows. :-( So Japan will keep redistributing the radiation through such burning of radioactive materials onto its own citizens...and when the wind shifts and travels across the Pacific on the Jet Stream, it comes to the Pacific Northwest, to my family's, friends' and neighbors' homes. :-(

This is insanity! I hope Arne can get this message to the Japanese government pronto.

In the meantime, what are we here in the PNW to think or do? Berkeley BRAWM members have tried to reassure us that so far, levels of radioisotopes detected have been small and not dangerous. But what about the constant supply on the breeze, courtesy of the non-stopping radiation releases and re-releases due to the debris burning which Arne refers to in the video??? What about the long-term effect of the slow build up of these low levels until they aren't so low anymore? When does it end? How does it stop? And who is going to stop it?

P.S. Someone commented that they thought they heard Arne say the new stack to vent the radiation from Unit 1 would be "deliberate" on the part of the Japanese. I don't think he meant they were intentionally trying to poison the people living in the Pacific Northwest. I just think he meant that the high vent would help blow it away from the local area.

I don't think there is any other choice for them, is there? Either keep the radiation local and poison more of Japan or send it out to sea and hope it gets diluted enough to be harmless when landing elsewhere. To them, it must be a "lesser of two evils" decision. Unfortunately, no one though ahead enough prior to building the multi-reactor plant on a high seismic activity and tsunami-vulnerable area...the "lesser of two evils" in that choice would have been either less electric power for Japan which they'd have to find another way to generate, or this deadly nightmare.

Hmmm...maybe we all should start thinking of this "lesser of two evils" scenarios for our own nations in our future energy planning decisions. To me, the answer is becoming starkly clear. The worst evil is the uncontrollable poisoning of innocent people due to unforseeable and unpreventable disasters (whether "natural" or "man-made" makes absolutely NO difference), not the fact that we may need to find alternate power sources.

Is it safe to fly through

Is it safe to fly through the plum? I live in Seattle too and I am thinking evacuate to Dallas for my child's sake, stay there for several wks, or just settle there if things do not get better. Taxes seems to be a good place to be since it's further south. by looking at the wind pattern map, it's better protected somehow...I am feeling so guilty though to leave my Hubby behind due to his job..

Does anyone here know if it's safe to fly at the hight of the plum? Is the air in airplane totally isolated from outside air? or is it better to stay put here at the groud level and stay inside instead?

Thanks so much!

Concerned Mom

There is no plume

Hi Concerned Mom,

Worldwide, there have not been detectable levels of radioactive isotopes from Japan in the air for 2 or 3 months now. Some have raised concerns about radioactivity spreading through the air due to the potential burning of crops and other materials in Japan that have been contaminated. These concerns have not yet materialized, and I doubt that they will, except perhaps the local area in Japan.

A tremendous amount of material would have to be burned very rapidly in order for there to be anything detectable in the US, and there will be plenty of warning from air monitors if this ever were to happen. Even if there were detectable levels in the air, there is no possible way that these levels could come close to the very tiny concentrations we and others detected at the peak back in March.

Mark [BRAWM Team Member]

"Worldwide"?

"Worldwide, there have not been detectable levels ..."? "WORLDWIDE"?
Your attempts to de-emphasize, under-report and and reassure in the face of overwhelming danger and destruction to the environment while pretending that all is well; no danger here, nothing to worry about, everyone go home; so that the nuclear industry, which you hope to supply your future income, will not be curtailed becomes more obvious with so many of your postings. 'Worldwide' indeed! This also shows your blantant disregard for the current suffering and suffering that will come to the Japanese people and all the peoples of surrounding nations. Worldwide? Perhaps you go to Japan and stand downwind of Fukushima and burning of radioactive contaminated waste. Drink some water and have some of the food they eat. How about a little fresh sushi caught nearby from the bay. Enjoy vacation to South Korea or China. The Japanese government has raised the acceptable levels so you should feel it is now safe. Then go home and see if you have any concerns about cancer or your future mutilated offspring and non-detected radioactive releases 'Worldwide'.

Clarification -- not referring to Japan

I apologize — I was not clear that I was referring to the world outside of Japan. There indeed are still elevated environmental radiation levels in some areas of Japan. I apologize for appearing to downplay or minimize the situation in Japan. Thank you for pointing this out so that I can clarify.

The point of my comment was to put the situation in the US in proper context. The question I was answering was about whether levels in the air in the US were safe to fly through. My answer was that the levels in the air are undetectable, not only in the US but also around the world outside of Japan. For example, air concentrations that are undetectable outside of Japan can be seen in the CTBTO data compiled by the German government. Also, for the Bay Area, our measurements show that cesium is gone from the air here.

Regarding the potential burning of contaminated material in Japan, I did say that those concerns could materialize in "the local area in Japan."

I and the rest of the team will not be going into the nuclear industry. We are simply making measurements and trying to provide some context.

Radioactive Plume

Hi Concerned Mom,

The term 'plume' can have many definitions and shades of gray. Check the following site for "10 Day Forecasts - The graphics presented here are a 10 day forecast of the movement of the PLUME (my caps) based on an assumed constant radionuclide release rate of 1012 becquerels/second (Bq/s) for both I-131 and Cs-137"
http://www.senes.ca/japan/forecasts.html

Since there is no 'good' and therefore no 'safe' amount of radiation (regardless of what the industry may contend), arrange your schedule such that you'll be outdoors on days when the wind is not moving large amounts radioactive fallout your direction. Indoors (including inside an airplane) is much safer than outdoors when some of the more radioactive air is passing. As you can see from the 850mb maps, there is more radiation expected as your altitude increases. Modern jets have pressurized cabins so your air will be similar to what was/is present at launch and then landing.

The greatest concern regarding low level radiation is through internal ingestion. 'Hot particles' (which BRAWM contends no knowledge thereof), brought into the lungs through breathing, and consumption of small amounts of radioactive particles ingested through your food. All radiation is cumulative. Learn how to purchase and then stock up on foods produced before 3-11. See 'my safe foods list': http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/node/3361

Please note from the maps that Texas is expected to get some fallout too. Behavioral changes may be as or more effective than moving. Stay out of the rain, wear a mask if you'll be in dusty conditions, leave your shoes outdoors, keep the house free of dust, change your HVAC filters regularly, install a water purifier, seek clean foods, remain aware of days projected to have high levels of 'low level' fallout acting accordingly, etc.

The US government classified the levels of radioisotopes in the food entering the US after the Chernobyl explosion,(now available through the freedom of information act), so that our citizens would not know. The government says that radiation causing 3.5 deadly cancers per 1000 people is acceptable. Do not expect the government or any agency supported through public tax dollars (public universities included) to act in an any more responsible manner than they were able to act during the Chernobyl disaster.

WRONG!!!!

The US government classified the levels of radioisotopes in the food entering the US after the Chernobyl explosion,(now available through the freedom of information act),
=====================

WRONG!! Evidently you do not know that the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) does not trump classified information. In fact, it is written right in the Freedom of Information Act. There are nine exemptions to FOIA requests, and classified information is the first of these nine:

http://www.osec.doc.gov/omo/foia/exemptions.htm

(b)(1) EXEMPTION - Protects Classified Matters of National Defense or Foreign Policy
This exemption protects from disclosure national security information concerning the national defense or foreign policy, provided that it has been properly classified in accordance with the substantive and procedural requirements of an executive order.

If, for example, you were to file a Freedom of Information Act request with the Dept. of Energy saying that you wanted the blueprints for one of the USA's hydrogen bombs, the DOE can cite Exemption 1, and return your FOIA request as DENIED

Declassified radioactive levels

When the information was declassified it was obtained through the 'Freedom of Information Act'. Of course the act does not 'trump' currently classified material. One still has to use the act to obtain de-classified material as was done in this case.

FOIA is used to compel...

FOIA is used to compel the Government to release information that it otherwise would keep under wraps.

If the information is classified, the FOIA can't force it out of the Government. If they want to keep it secret, they keep it classified.

If the Government de-classifies it; then they are putting it out for public consumption and no compulsion via FOIA is required.

So you don't need FOIA to compel the Government to release de-classified material. When it is de-classified, the Government is essentially giving the public access.

FOIA is for information that was never classified, but the Government wants to keep out of the public eye.

Trying to understand your

Trying to understand your refute, would that mean that the information was at some point de-classified, subsequently why it is available via FOIA now?
Thanks! Sometimes following the threads gets a bit confusing.

Mask Test Japan to LAX

Here is a test which was done. Japan to LAX. Shows elevated.
http://www.enviroreporter.com/2011/06/filter-mask-worn-lax-to-japan-june...

Another test was done using an N95 mask while flying from St. Louis, MO to LAX and showed no sign of increased radiation.

see notation on date 8/12/2011
http://www.enviroreporter.com/radiation-station-stats/

Airline pilots have an increased risk of glaucoma. Sorry I don't have the link for that one.

If I were pregnant or had a weak immune system I would not fly or if I had to I would get an N95 mask. They can be purchased at all major airports at the concession stand. You have to ask for them. (about $2.99)

So I would say it's a roll of the dice if you are flying through clouds in the jet stream. (my opinion) It has been proven that single x-ray can damage an unborn fetus. 80 percent chance of leukemias. It used to be standard procedure to x-ray the pelvis prior to birth until 1970.

Remember: Any amount of radiation beyond normal background is not good for you.

You are going to get MORE...

You are going to get more radiation exposure from cosmic rays while flying in the airplane than you would EVER get from the Fukushima fallout.

We Have A Winner !

ding ding ding ...

WRONG

Just do a search on this forum.... put in "airplane". Read numerous threads addressing and rebutting this propaganda. Keep your mind open to truth, don't be a robot.

a 'win' for a shill = loser

The use of the airplane analogy, when applied to dispersed radiological particulate, is dead and buried.

See the link for
'Airplane analogy is Improper use of ICRP Models According to ICRP'

Particles

Ingested particles cannot be compared to cosmic rays!!!

Wear a mask. What can it hurt? Err on the side of caution is always prudent.

Oh cripe, not THAT baloney

Oh cripe, not THAT baloney again... Check the forum for a thread debunking that propaganda.

Cesium to Begin Falling on Pacific NW States

Deliberate is accurate. "Dilution is the solution to pollution," is the scientific mantra to dealing with with these situations, (as I was told recently when speaking to a UCLA scientist). Diliberate dilution... through the food chain, through the jet stream, through the Pacific Ocean... all these avenues serve as means to dilute the high levels of radioactivity to a level where they may be manageable. This does not mean that the Japanese government is intentionally poisoning the world, it does mean that they are choosing (often through inaction, often through the routes taken) to distribute this radiation far and wide, in the hopes of saving their own backsides. I think that they believe they have no choice, if they are to retain any hope for the future of the Japanese nation... this disaster is simply too huge and too out of control for them to manage. I think it is naiive that many on this and other discussion sites keep posting, (in incredulity to the hideous missteps and seemingly incomprehensible choices that TEPCO and the Japanese government have made in dealing with this mess), "perhaps they do not know what they are doing." In the early days TEPCO panicked & fled the site, missing the critical opportunity to possibly contain this beast. Those opportunities are gone. This has created/and continues to create so much radioactive waste... where are the Japanese to store it? They are geographically constrained. Mind you, I think they need to make the morally correct decision and designate some wasteland in THEIR territory to store, in perpetuity, the debris... however, that does not appear to be the decision that they are making, and our own government is apparently backing them on this.

Perhaps the reason is that, in the first days of this disaster, the Obama regime transferred the authority/responsibility for responding to this from the EPA to the NRC. A move that should make all of us suspicious, given that the EPA is mandated to protect the public and was historically charged with the responsibility to protect the United States from foreign nuclear disasters... whereas the NRC is a nuclear industry promoter, run by nuclear industry shills. This transfer of responsibility immediately raised the radiation "levels of concern" rate from the public safety oriented EPA levels, to the crisis management and extremely hazardous NRC levels... for the entire American public. Sounds like the US and the Japanese government are using the same playbook, doesn't it. Here is a great lecture given by Daniel Hirsch, UCSB professor. It was a speech to the concerned Santa Cruz community given early in the game (mid April, I believe), before we knew the true extent of the contamination. Nevertheless, this serves as a great refresher as Hirsch gives a solid history, comments upon the US reaction/policy changes in March and gives his recommendations going forward. It's long... but well worth the time investment:
http://www.communitytv.org/programs/online/japanese-nuclear-disaster?gcl...

We cannot afford to give the Japanese government the "benefit of the doubt," on their seeming management mistakes of this catastrophe any longer. We have already accepted enough contamination/future injury while walking down that road, and it's been an ugly trip with no rest stops and no destination in sight, thus far. The world community is being injured. The world community needs to step in and protect the children of the world, as well as the children of Japan since apparently the Japanese government is willing to sacrifice them in service to their denials and lies. Is it a matter of national pride? Is it an attempt to protect the nuclear industry? I really don't care. This insanity must come to an end... and I am confident that it will not come to any sort of positive conclusion under current management.

Spread of Radiation

I do not feel 'dilution' is anywhere near a solution for Fukushima fallout. I would call it uncontrolled random 'SPREADING' and 'ACCUMULATION'.

Using the word dilution sort of applies to a single one time event perhaps. Like a nuke bomb going off or a Three Mile Island event. Fukushima however is literally the 'cat out of the bag' syndrome and with ongoing multiple scenarios. (Air, soil, ocean dumping)

Even when contaminated animals die the spot they come to rest at will then become contaminated. If someone comes along and plants a peach tree five years later on that spot. Guess what? If rain water passes over that spot. Guess what? Animals that eat contaminated food or water will defecate at some point. Guess what? It will continue to spread in more ways than we can think of. It IS insidious.

Perhaps the questions should be something like:
How do things like Strontium and Cesium spread?
What REALLY are the 'chain' of events that are unfolding?
Can anything be done to 'slow' down the spread?
How far and wide will it go?
Shouldn't we already be testing or getting ready to test the 'bejeebers' out of just about everything?

Nobody, wants to imagine or even talk about the actual 'spread' subject because the reality is the 'spread' cannot be stopped. It's ongoing wherever it lands and whatever it touches until the radioactive decay ceases. For you and I this will go on long after our lifetime.

In the cases of both cesium and strontium 90 it will remain hazardous to life for about 300 years. (Always mentioning the 30 year half-life of cesium is very misleading in my opinion) Half-life is not what's important to people, it's the amount of time it remains hazardous, that's the real key!

Cesium spread map: http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2011/08/01/world/asia/01radiation-grap...

Unfortunately, it will continue to grow like a blob.

I am sure the Nuclear Experts will someday say. "This is truly regrettable, we thought we could control it. Oops."

Couldn't have said it better myself ;-)

Thanks, Annette, for your insight. I will check out the link to Hirsh's speech. The question now becomes: where do we go from here?

oops--make that "Unfortunately, no one THOUGHT ahead..."

:-P

I like how he stops one step

I like how he stops one step short of calling "ungrounded sensationalism" what the guys at Russia Today did while talking about steam breaking through the ground at the plant.

Cesium to Begin Falling on Pacific NW States

I agree... this is hideous. We've been patient and long-suffering with the 5+ months of fall-out (much of it due to human error = preventable), acknowledging the greater suffering of the Japanese people. But, burning radioactive debris is short-sighted and selfish and will obviously further injure the Japanese as well. I was further disheartened to hear Arnie say that the Reactor #1 tent will lower the radiation on-site, but vent the radiation at a higher altitude, lofting it more effectively into the jetstream and further spreading the love far & wide... just fantastic. So, spread the word... write all of your representatives (attempt to shame them into action), write your local papers, post on your FB pages... basically black cloud everyone's day... hopefully the American people (and rest of No. Hemisphere) have some shred of self-preservation left and this will catch some attention, and motivate to action. Enough is enough.

Action is needed - I agree!

I agree, Annette. Action is definitely needed. Here is a good place to start: Watch this video, created by a guy named Norman in Japan: http://vimeo.com/27982280

It is a summary of what has been happening in Japan since 3-11. He has created a petition to ask the Japanese government to help relocate the families of Fukushima and their children: ipetitions.com/?petition/?evacuate_fukushima/?

(As you may have read, the Japanese government had been trying to put a "happy face" on this situation, claiming it would soon be safe for families in the 20 km exclusion zone to go back home. I think their decision may have recently changed, given the high levels of contamination they are finding not only near the Fukushima plant, but in some areas as far south as Tokyo as well.)

But the dangers still exist for the children outside this arbitrary exclusion zone...and that is why they have started the petition.

So spread the word! Helping protect the most innocent among us, our children, from this terrible tragedy, is the least we can do as compassionate human beings. I can't think of a more worthwhile course of action.

Deliberate.....Arnie's words

Did you notice how Arnie used the word "deliberate" spreading of cesium ?

OMFG ! Can't we do anything to stop the fricking nonsense of the Japanese government !

What I wonder

What I wonder is why other countries are not stopping it. Isn't it some sort of infringement on the other countries.

Shouldn't the waste be stored in the dead zones. Oops, I forgot, they want to move people back into the dead zones.

Well, I guess we can just consider this whole thing as one giant epidemiological study of the effects of various levels of radiation on humans, plants, and animals.
