Dead Zone

Why doesn't the Japanese government just store the waste in the dead zone instead of burning it !

Friggin impossible for them to figure this out ??

I thought of a few funny replies when I first read your post but as I thought about it I realized you have an excellent idea. Land storage!! Just have to consider some things like rain run-off to make it work.
However, we all know that great thinking and government actions are incompatible.

Salt mines

In New Mexico they are storing the waste in deep salt mines, there is a theory that eventually the salt encapsulates and seals up the waste, this happens deep underground, and prevents it from hitting the water table.

This would be a better option than burning the waste. I don't like nuclear period. But this is just a better way to deal with the waste we already have. Here is the link. Of course the cheapest way to burn it and spread it all around.
