Does A Conflict Of Interest Exist As Regards Dept OF Energy Grants & UCB BRAWM/Nuclear Engineering? Probably 'Yes', IMHO.
CONGRATULATIONS to UC Berkeley Professor Kai Vetter and the $25 Million Dollar Department of Energy Grant for UCB Nuclear Engineering!!! (...in addition it appears to many other grants!)

"Teaching will be accompanied by an active research component to give the students full exposure to the advanced theoretical and experimental techniques."
Woot! Woot! We can all anxiously await the best 'Rubber Ducky' analogies and 'Monkeys Banging Cymbals' analogies which 'money can buy'!

“UC Berkeley worried About Grant Status”
http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2011/06/17/uc-berkeley-fear...
Well…I can understand why! Who wants to pay $25 Million for ‘Pseudo Science’ like ‘Airplane Analogies’?
Why not just buy everyone on the BRAWM Team a ‘Spirograph’ as well as one of those small ‘Telescopic Kaleidoscopes’ and an ‘Etch-A-Sketch’?
I promise you that whoever loved the ‘Airplane Analogy’ will be distracted within SECONDS of such a presentation of gifts, and ‘Reality Based Science’ will be BACK on the menu.
(OR, here is a better idea- redirect that SAME money into UCBerkeley’s ‘Arts Departments’ where it will breed the next Van Gogh or Ginsberg or Gershwin instead of propagating Nuclear Fallout Cycles)
I'm certain that there exists the possibility that the BRAWM Team and the UC Berkeley Nuclear Engineering Dept. is 'above reproach' in terms of ‘conflict of interest’.
However, if there is 'more to the story' then I will just 'read all about it' in the news like everyone else, right?

Those grants (one of them alone is for $25 million over 5 years) are, of course, very good news for UC Berkeley’s Nuclear Engineering Fundraising Personnel. In fact, I am troubled only that such vast amounts of money could potentially ‘pave the poisoning’ of a ‘new generation of young minds’ with ‘walls’ literally ‘born of illusion’ masquerading as ‘science’. There is our silver lining, yes?
I would much rather see that money go to projects such as but not limited to the following http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/node/4962 headed up by Arnie Gundersen and Helen Caldicott and Chris Busby and Riki Ott, Michio Kaku, Lucas Hixson and others who seem much more ‘on track’ with the current reality of the Fukushima situation and how it relates to public health.
I believe Dr. Bill Nye would be a wonderful addition as well. He called Cesium early on and was ‘yanked off the airwaves’ for doing so. Such figures will apply strong science towards ‘solutions’ as opposed to ‘cover ups’ on behalf of industry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8GlzUjYazs&feature=player_embedded
Otherwise, such grant money should be cut or redirected to the Arts.
Such acts could create jobs as well as provide benefit to the public health, as opposed to reinforcing ‘lack of necessary remediation methods’ into the bright young minds of the future through the name of a prestigious University, further empowering the NRC and IAEA who have failed us miserably.
We need science ‘benefiting humanity’, not ‘erasing humanity from the records’ for industry’s sake.
We need to get back to respecting people’s lives.
The ‘Industry Culture’ is permeated with and propagated through ‘contracts’. One must write ‘smart and effective contracts’. Many, including myself, have just proven through intense research and scientific scrutiny, that the ‘Airplane Analogy Science’ was a ‘false contract’, in terms of how it affected public trust and public health. As such the ‘Airplane Analogy’ will now be discarded. (Effective Dose should also be discarded, I’ll get to that later on…)
Was the BRAWM Team approach a PR operation which was ‘engineered through contracts’ years ago, during the Bush/Cheney Energy Task Force Hearings which took place behind closed doors, which of course, would have nudged such a PR Campaign over to ‘Industry Needs’?
Have we been watching those Bush/Cheney Energy Task Force contracts in action since Mid March? Is that story now beginning to unravel?
Is it possible that John Yoo helped with those contracts? (I heard he wrote some interesting stuff) Where is John Yoo nowadays?

Damning News On Radiation Coverup:

There is much in the news as far as Radiation related cover-ups and the like, isn't there?
The People have a chance to catch ‘the system’ here. This attempt to dominate the scientific discussion with embarrassingly low standards of science on behalf of industry liability is ‘deafening’.
I hope Governor Brown finds a way to stop giving such 'destructive entities' and the mechanisms which support them, ‘more gold' from the country and taxpayers which industry apparently needs to 'suffer illness, grief and even death', in order for industry to prosper.
We will be just fine with solar power. We all know it. Industry lies have postponed 'localized energy policy' just as industry lies have postponed 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness'.
Only scientists and autodidacts can reclaim science. Reclaiming science means reclaiming reality. It was always inevitable that we would get back to that truth.

Of course there is.
But I challenge you to find a better alternative. There's nothing BRAWM members can do about this conflict of interest besides choose a different career. Short of that, let's appreciate the free forum they have provided us here. Deeply appreciate, in fact. I also believe that their data they provide us are accurate, inasmuch as I do not believe they report false numbers. Interpretations are always up to the observer and we are not forced to share theirs. Meanwhile they provide us real data, whatever limits it may have.
Angels maybe not, but hardly devils either.
Of course there is no alternative.
I do appreciate the forum , which is why I am utilizing it to illustrate what REAL science is in contrast to the rubbish which has been provided.
The Airplane Analogy made certain that precautions would not even be taken for children and pregnant mothers in the face of what we KNOW is a public health threat in the form of radiation fallout. This was accomplished on the Nuclear Industry's behalf. The rewards for such actions come in the form of 'grants' and 'upward mobility' in the industry owned scientific community.
What do you think the mission of the Airplane Analogy was? To force independent testing into being?
Here, I have a challenge: I challenge all of us to 'use our brains'.
That, or we can continue to dine upon 'sugar coated pseudo-science' like 'Airplane Analogies'.
Pick a bale of cotton. Pick a bale of hay.
The allegations of a
The allegations of a conflict of interest surface frequently here. Frankly, I find them tiresome. None of the posts have been deleted - even ones that in my opinion add nothing to intelligent discussion. If you feel the forum is tainted by a conflict of interest, why do you continue to post?
Also, talking of "reclaiming science" by "reclaiming reality" after alluding to wild conspiracy theories involving George Bush, Dick Cheney, and John Yoo (!?!) is laughable. Just an observation. How exactly do 2 oilmen and a torture proponent relate to nuclear power? Do enlighten us - actually, please don't.
JAL
IMO- this site has become merely a public relations forum
Yes, yes there is a huge confilct of interest going on at 'BRAWM' IMO. Even with all there tax payer funded, state of the art equipment, they aren't testing very much at all- I'd say they are testing the bare minimum that they can IMO. Mark (bandstra), I believe has stated that he had been working with FEMA and the Dept of homeland security over nuclear issues.
This site has lost all credibility IMHO. They still won't release the plutonium data they tested for months ago, they have stopped soil, water, and air sampling. BRAWM= "Berkeley Radiological Air and Water Monitoring". If 'BRAWM' refuses to test the air and water then why are you getting our tax money? Why is this forum still here? The real 'BRAWM' team members seem to have been pushed aside by the powers that be and there public relations professional 'Bandstra' is in full control of this forum now IMHO. The first several weeks in here had many students giving great info and test results daily. I mean, why aren't the other team members allowed to post in here anymore? POST THE DAMN PLUTONIUM RESULTS YOU TOLD US WE WOULD GET OVER TWO MONTHS AGO! We, as tax paying Americans deserve more from our federally funded institutions than this 'spin machine', it's there duty to test for these isotopes(that they helped to create)in our environment, not mereley there priviledge. Demand more action people and stop allowing them to misinform us with airplane trips and banana analogies, the same way Tepco has been to the Japanese people!!!! DEMAND WHAT YOU DESERVE OR NOTHING WILL CHANGE!

Scientists Harassed By Industry For Publishing Scientific Research
http://summitcountyvoice.com/2011/07/30/feds-may-be-muzzling-scientist-o...
From the article:
Although the IG probe has been going on for months, Monnett was suddenly suspended on July 18 due to the IG’s “on-going inquiry.” He has not been informed of any specific charge or question relating to the scientific integrity of his work, nor is it clear why the IG has mounted a multi-month investigation of a five-year-old journal article. IG interview transcripts do reveal, however, that –
• The probe is being conducted by criminal investigators with no scientific training or background, who, based upon their questions, have little grasp of the scientific issues they are investigating;
• They have rifled through all of Dr. Monnett’s e-mails and seized his papers and equipment, impeding his ability to work even before he was ordered to stay home; and
• The investigators are seeking a link to former Vice President Al Gore, who referenced the polar bear paper in his book and movie, An Inconvenient Truth.
“Ever since this paper was published, Dr. Monnett has been subjected to escalating official harassment, culminating in his recent virtual house arrest,” Ruch said in a press release. He thinks the huge economic stakes for oil companies seeking to open Arctic waters is resulting in the suppression of scientific research.
Congratulations. You got my attention.
