If one were to be semi-aware of being on such a merry-go-round, could one abandon one's planned career trajectory and leap off, back onto solid ground?

Fascinating. The downside on the slippery slope of groupthink.
Same mentality now - here we are after multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns - obeying the authorities. Could be to our own destruction.
