I DARE you to analyse vehicle air filters

Cars are driving about all day sucking in air and if there is any doubt about the radioactivity being released by Fukushima, then vehicle air filters should remove those doubts.

Radioactivity will stay in the air filter and would represent the radiation picked up by the human lungs over time.

Human lungs or bodies are not like a measuring cup. They are more like an air filter. Radiation lodges in the body and stays there. Very similar to an air filter in fact.

I realise it would not be the same a static measuring station but it would be more representative of a human going about breathing in the air - rather than standing still in one spot at the university, which may or may not be subject to radiation particles blowing in the wind.

Yes, it is all very well being scientific about this and it will be nice in the future to write reports about it and get those reports peer-reviewed etc. But this situation needs to get the data which is relevent to humans NOW. We depend on guys like you to give us the facts, we dont care about your peer-reviewed reports, we do care about our loved ones who may be in danger.

Like the Woods Hole Oceanographic 'cruise' into the sea off Fukushima, we cannot wait until the winter for the real-life data to be released. This is a matter of life and death if there IS radiation blowing in the wind then an analysis of air filters would be far more real-life than measurments from a static station on a university roof somewhere.

Problem is...many vehicle

Problem is...many vehicle parts are still produced and shipped from Japan, aren't they? What is the likelihood of replacing old air/pollen filters with new radioactive ones?

Great idea. I have access

Great idea. I have access to many autofilters in the Central Ca. area if BRAWM is interested.

According to my friend who

According to my friend who is an automechanic, the air filter in your vehicle doesn't affect the air you breathe while driving the vehicle. If anything, the pollen filter should be replaced (which is air you breathe when the heat vents or air conditioning are turned on).

"when the heat vents or air

"when the heat vents or air conditioning are turned on"

Not only when it is on. The airflow is there through a filter even when it is turned off. It is just not that intense, but you can feel it if you bring you hand clother to the air outlets.

this is a great idea,

this is a great idea, perhaps phrasing it a bit more gently would be more persuasive to the BRAWM team. wish these good ideas wouldn't get posited as challenges. not very productive.

Yes, you are right of

Yes, you are right of course.

I should have said it in a more gentle way, but, there again, we cannot tell what motivates people can we?

Sometimes a challenge works and sometimes it is completely the wrong way to go about things. We will see if they rise to the challenge. It is done now, anyway.

The suggestion was really referring to air filters for the engine, but I suppose equally well be for the airconditioning system. I dont know much about these.

Garages would have many air filters that they replace with regular services and they probably just throw them out in the trash.
