Air update (6/25)

6/25 (11:28am): Our second consecutive non-detection of all fission product isotopes has been posted on the air results page for a sample collected on 6/8–17. The MDA levels for I-131, Cs-134, and Cs-137 are the lowest we have achieved to date — over 1,000 times lower than our highest detections in late March. If the next air sample also shows undetectable levels, we will discontinue our air sampling effort in order to focus on refining our calibrations.

Could someone answer this

Could someone answer this please? Are hot particles still a concern at the moment?

Understandable and certainly

Understandable and certainly defensible, Mark, but here's my concern: With BRAWM's imminent suspension / cessation of regular air quality monitoring, where can the general public turn for detailed information in future, and who will man the battlements on our behalf? EPA's outsourced RadNet system is, at best, a canary in a coal mine; its broad-range, near-realtime reporting can document the symptoms, if you will, but is virtually incapable of ascertaining the cause, and can therefore offer up nothing in the way of diagnosis; with no clear explanation of what provided gamma- and beta-energy ranges actually MEAN, this purported comprehensive radiation-monitoring failsafe is in practice only minimally more useful than the noble, but necessarily amateurish ad hockey "Radiation Network" civilian initiative. (No insult intended to that fine and dedicated group of radiological town criers.)

Here's my main concern, Mark: Since May 23rd, I haven't heard a darned thing from TEPCO, the Japanese government, or the IAEA -- or anyone else for that matter -- about the efforts that were underway to CONSTANTLY MONITOR airborne emissions from Buildings 1 through 4 at Fukushima. This much-ballyhooed initiative was going to involve the placement of radiation sensors on cranes that were to have been moved into position directly above the shattered reactor housings, offering constant insight into what manner of exotic matter might be puffing out from Fukushima-Daiichi into the general environment. For some reason or other, following a very few, very preliminary results over a full month ago, this effort was either abandoned entirely, or else its conclusions were buried and have yet to see the light of day. Without such monitoring, how are we to know if radiological releases surge once more? Many of us have grown, to put it mildly, a little suspicious of TEPCO's commitment to transparency, decision-making abilities, crisis-management philosophy, good judgement and even motives. It would be nice to be able to rely upon a secondary level of professional monitoring -- a "defense in depth", if you will, to (even if only from a very great distance) ensure that no further "funny business " is going to pass unnoticed and unheralded.

Might we be able to prevail upon you at least to consider maintaining some manner of "passive" air monitoring -- publishing only as needed to alert the public to an unexpected rise in atmospheric radionuclide levels at Berkeley? That way, we could at least rest assured that if ever there WERE significant future releases from Fukushima, SOMEONE responsible and transparent would be watching, and willing to sound the alarm to alert the sleeping villagers.

Best always, thanks.

I have been checking results

I have been checking results daily but I haven't been participating in the forum. I know levels have always been negligible to health but it's still been freaking me out so it's great to have been able to see the downward trend. Thanks BRAWM! I'm sure many others like me who have been watching in silence are equally grateful. My only concern is that you guys will not pick it back up again if there's another explosion. I believe Michio Kaku when he says "It's still a ticking time bomb". I'm also wondering if increased testing of ocean based food would be useful as time passes and the water they dumped (and will have to dump again) reaches Cali shores?

Thanks, Mark and BRAWM team!!!

All your information has been greatly appreciated.

Hope you will remain on standby in the event something significant happens in Japan. Let's hope all goes well.

Thanks again!!!

Thank you so much for all

Thank you so much for all you guys/gals do! I am sure I can speak for many moms out there that these results are a huge relief. Thank you!
I am still concerned over future releases, though so my vote is to please keep testing during those times!

California mom

air sample detection experiment and results

Thanks, again. I can see the degree of refinement necessary to acquire the data. I am amazed.

Can anyone confirm if hot

Can anyone confirm if hot particles are still an issue then? Particularly on the West Coast of US and Canada? Thx.

"Hot Particles"-question still being ignored?(I'd like 2 know 2)

Regarding the question about hot particles- it seems that question was answered in a sense by announcement of non-detects in air from last sample dates. My reason for wanting to see the question responded to is mostly due to elevated radiation levels that have risen higher at some US monitoring stations to levels even higher than was seen in April and in some cases even late March? Also with news of the opening of Fuku #2 bldg. to "vent"radiation & humidity-I would suspect some consequences from it here in the US. Very little in the way of "good news" has been announced,in fact most of what those of us concerned are able to gather from the sparse assortment of credible sources is either "bad news"or the same old crap with no changes besides the logical assumption that more of the materials have been released in the meantime. While the BRAWMM Team has been better than most about informing the status of the ongoing crisis than most, the overall response by those qualified to answer this valid question, and everything else preying on the public's mind remains unanswered and in my opinion is worse than knowing the answer to questions I've seen in this forum like-"are we all walking dead now?",etc. Not knowing what's going on or will happen next,or what to do is a BS way to respond to valid questions. Sometimes silence is taken as a clear answer to questions someone may need to make life & death decisions that could be determining factors about actions involving themselves. I won't say the words-but I think most can guess what I'm getting at. Personally,I'm "stable" for now-but I KNOW there must be a whole lot of people who aren't! Unfortunately I've lost my previous ability to come up with much to get them to change their minds since 3/11 changed EVERYTHING and much of the damage can never be fixed or forgotten!! After all this typing they might've answered the original question by now!~LOL~

Thanks so much!

I am a mom who's still checking on your results every day or two. This is wonderful news and I just wanted to once again express gratitude for your ongoing efforts.

Excellent! Thank you Mark

Excellent!

Thank you Mark and BRAWM.

Thanks

Thanks so much Mark!

You are truly my heroes!

You are truly my heroes! Please continue testing our food, fruits, grains, and potatoes since these are staples in mosteoples diets. Your work can help keep a lot of children healthy! Thank you !!!!!!
