But sometimes x-rays are taken when they’re not medically needed. And even when there is a good medical reason for an x-ray, if proper care is not taken, the patient can get more radiation than necessary. Like many things, x-rays may do harm as well as good. X-rays may add slightly to the chance of getting cancer in later life. And if the sex organs are in or near the x-ray beam, changes could be produced in the reproductive cells. Those changes might be passed on and could cause harm in future children and grandchildren.
Because of the amount of radiation used in x-ray examinations is small, the chance that x-rays will cause these problems is very low. Still, it makes sense to avoid unnecessary risks, no matter how small. By avoiding x-rays that aren’t medically needed, you avoid the risks, and you can also avoid unnecessary medical costs. You may now be asking, “How many x-ray exams are safe?” There’s really no answer to this question. There is no number that is definitely safe, just as there is no number that is definitely dangerous. Every x-ray can involve some tiny risk. If the x-ray is needed to find out about a medical problem, then that small risk is certainly worth taking.
10 Ways to Reduce Your Cancer Risk
8. Avoid unnecessary X-rays. Radiation from X-rays increases the risk of several cancers. “Tell your dentist you don’t want X-rays every year,” advises Dr. Thun. “And if your child needs a CT scan, make sure the facility has low-dose pediatric CT equipment. But don’t avoid recommended mammograms. The benefit of mammography for early detection of breast cancer far outweighs the risk of its radiation exposure.”

X-ray radiation is more important than it seems because it is hitting the body all at once in a tiny timeframe. You can't correctly compare it to background radiation over a period of months.

I am ashamed to say this, although it is not particularly a secret anyway among the citizens of other countries: the average American is a moron.
This explains so much about the state of the US and the level of genuine concern and civic participation among our citizens. Or, as most Americans would say, "Duh!"

It is embarrassing, isn't it? What a dilemma. You love your country, but when you travel to others, you can see what a caricature we've become. The US media overseas (news reports, tv shows, movies) reflects our undereducated and debased society.

Americans seem to think they are the moral compass for the rest of the world, but have no concern or guts to take care of theirvown and stand up against the institutions and government when it let's them down as in the case of the Fukushima disaster. We seem to justify and accept all that is being done to us ( lack of testing of food products and information on protection) where many thousands will become sick and die due to the lies and coverups yet we can't accept deaths in lybia that is experiencing a revolution that we have no business in interfering! Think about it all, what a hypocritical attitude we as a nation hold!

All this self-loathing may be trendy but it makes me nauseous.
Americans might be more willing to accept CERTAIN deaths in Libya than you might imagine. It's the notion of losing actual USEFUL people that's unpalatable, such as the brave men and women who volunteer to put on a uniform and serve their country for practically no respect and virtually no pay. We might be able to stomach losing certain mouthy, ungrateful, worthless malcontents, though, who contribute nothing to society save pissing, moaning and demanding.

Your "ugly American" tone and arrogance illustrates why so many good Americans are self loathing. Your psychology reflects a sick and dysfunctional culture that good moral people in the US - and there are a few left - cannot relate to.
Now, as to the brave men and women who volunteer, we all agree they deserve enormous respect, but get little, and that will not change anytime soon. They need to wake up quickly to the fact they are merely cannon fodder for ugly agendas.
