WRONG again! This time it's Dr. Kai Vetter
According Vetter, there again he sees nothing to worry about. UC Berkeley nuclear engineers also demonstrated why it's impossible for the fuel rods in Japan to catch on fire. They exposed a piece of cladding, just like the ones found in the Japanese reactor cores to 2,000 degrees Celsius. If the cladding burnt, the nuclear fuel inside would send huge amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere.
"It's worse, much worse to have it on fire. The fire and the smoke become a way to spread the material that's inside," Professor Charles Yeamans from the UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering said.
The test proved the rods, while they would suffer some damage, would not catch on fire. The Japanese reactors have another layer of protection, pools of water that act as moderators unlike Chernobyl which had graphite.
"Graphite and coal can burn and burns pretty violently and so if you have a fire it distributes radioactive particles much better than just water and steam would do," Prof. Peter Hosemann from the UC Berkeley Department of Nuclear Engineering said.
"Whereas in the Japanese reactors it's a water cooled water moderated core so there is nothing that burns there," Vetter said.

Oxidation by my lights Dr. Vetter
http://www.fairewinds.com/updates
Fairewinds' Chief Nuclear Engineer, Arnie Gundersen, conducts a field demonstration simulating the impact of Fukushima's intense heat upon Zircaloy [zirconium alloy] fuel rods. Gundersen's demonstration shows that intense heat weakens and embrittles Zircaloy changing it from a sturdy metal to a brittle oxide that is easily shattered. Images from the post accident Three Mile Island nuclear core show embrittled and broken Zircaloy fuel rods in the nuclear reactor.
If Arnie Gundersen is the
If Arnie Gundersen is the Chief Nuclear Engineer of Fairewinds then that would imply that there are other lower ranking Nuclear Engineer's there also , does anyone know their names. Not counting Arnie's wife who is the only other member of Fairewinds that I can identify.
Just wanting to know where to place him on my belief scale , his vague statements , most with no pointers to where his 'Data' can be verified , has kept him very low on that scale so far.
The US EPA can verify.
The US EPA can verify.
Believe me or your lying eyes?
How odd!
Arnie Gunderson torched a piece of zirconium fuel rod case on one of his Fairewinds videos.
Applied an acetelyne torch to preheat
Sprayed water from a bottle
Re-applied the torch to the rod
Looked like combustion ... to me.
So am I going to believe you, or my lying eyes?
Gee, that is such a tough one for a degreed engineer.
I will stick with the peepers. So far so good.
Oh by the way, I would comment more often, but 'The Filter' is causing grief.
Thanks Bill Duff, I think I
Thanks Bill Duff, I think I believe my lying eyes too!
The airplane analogy … sucks.
The UC Berkeley effort is great and the data results appear to be generally reliable. Some explanations and analogies are more apt than others. The inaccuracies and failed analogies are expected in public dialog. Berkeley is cranking out the fastest and the best results.
The airplane analogy … sucks.
Some individuals (and cities) collect and drink rainwater. The subject drinks rainwater that contains 181 times the iodine allowed in drinking water, for 2.1 days. Isn’t that similar to drinking the maximum allowed level, in drinking water, for a year? The subject is dosed, and all up-front.
Public panic, is GREATLY FEARED, by some politicians. The remotest prospect of public panic, drives politicians nuts. They will tell any lie, in any forum, to assuage their fear of fear. Those who are not motivated by fear, do not understand their fear of fear.

Critiquing comparisons
Vetter and his colleagues try to put the health risks in perspective by pairing their data with calculations of "effective doses." For example, a person would have to drink 134 liters of the rainwater with the highest radiation levels to equal the average radiation exposure from flying cross-country. And radiation is dropping off quickly.
Robert Alvarez, senior scholar at the liberal think tank Institute for Policy Studies and a former DOE deputy assistant secretary for national security, is critical of those kinds of comparisons, which are also offered by EPA and health agencies.
Isotopes like iodine-131 are not part of normal background radiation, and have unique properties that background radiation does not, like accumulating in the thyroid gland, he pointed out.
"The doses are extremely small, and so, too, are the risks," he said. "But they liken it to everyday life and it's not like everyday life. You shouldn't have radioactive iodine even in tiny quantities finding its way into your milk supplies."
are you kidding me? This
are you kidding me? This article reeks of deception or Kai Vetter wasted his entire life. One or the other, and for the record I don't think he's a moron.
Dichotomy
.
I am willing to allow for more than 2 possibilities.
So, for example: sex, drugs, rock&roll, septicemia, meningitis, food poisoning, stroke ...
But I must confess, that continued use of 'the airplane analogy' seems to indicate something less than compos mentis. Even then, there could be some 'inside joke', such as a reference to the Aeroflot flight taken by Aleksandr Litvinenko (when he was poisoned with polonium).

Doesn't look like a fire at the reactor, though.
Still works for me
Yeah, too bad it wasn't a picture of the reactor 4 fire.
Professor Vetter’s
Professor Vetter’s research interests range from fundamental physics to biomedical imaging and homeland security. He is authored and co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He is also staff scientist at the Nuclear Science Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is currently establishing an Applied Nuclear Physics group with strong connections to the MAJORANA and GRETINA projects.

There is something seriously
There is something seriously wrong here, considering from their own words this is a very bad scenario, yet we have no detects from their admittedly contaminated lab? If they had genuine intentions and lowered everyone's expectations to their reliability and capabilities it would be one thing. These guys make me sick.
testing
I know that any testing can take weeks when testing mixed dilute samples. I also know the gear and lab space is dear and hard to come by unless your dripping in money. I also know that the 'peaceful' end of the nuclear industry does not even rate as a poor stepchild compared to the nuclear military programs. We as a public are getting hosed. The EPA and university lab are nice, talented and well-equipped for our 'friendly atom' community, that is until high volume testing is required. ANY MEASURABLE LEAKAGE will likely result in wisps, streaks and blotches of fallout and subsequent concentrations and bioampplfications. We, any and all of us worldwide, should in any case of MEASURABLE LEAKAGE be able to go to the HEALTH DEPT. and get our food, soil, water and air filters tested for any possible radiological courtesy of the nuclear industry. The 'peaceful' atom bunch, even combined with the EPA and the CTBTO (which we pay for and DO NOT have access to) are totally unprepared, underfunded and under-equipped to both provide the extensive and immediate testing for the detailed and fine-grained information required to make decisions in coping with garbage such as this. NO MORE FOR PROFIT NUKES. THE WORLD IS NOW THE NEW SUPERFUND SITE.
