Traces of radiation found in 2 whales off Japan

Middle school science fair

I live on the central coast of California, an area HUNDREDS of miles along THE PACIFIC OCEAN that has been utterly ignored by ALL testing organizations.

I have been saying for months (to anyone who would listen), that the current testing plan and protocol would get a failing grade in a Middle School science fair.

So, as to the lack of uniform testing in Japan, all I can say is that this would all be so laughable if it were not so tragic. It took them THREE months to decide to all use the same ruler?

Look, let's use some common sense. Clearly, given the state of our "best and brightest," let's admit that NONE of us should be dealing with nuclear energy. We are toddlers playing with matches and a tank of propane.

What the hell is an acceptable limit when any exposure ...

increases risk.

500 Bq seems way high to me. Is this what WE in the US will find acceptable in our seafood and tea etc?

Is it acceptable that tea and seafood from japan is deemed "acceptable" or safe when it is contaminated with 499 Bq/kilo?

Mind boggling.

The NHK tea results south of Tokyo reported that they are asking for voluntary recalls of tea and HOW much is getting to the US already tainted and is ANYONE testing and do we NOW have to accept the limits set in Japan which increased its permissible exposure levels?

This is so pissing me off.

One more thing: NHK reported today that Japan is now doing testing air radiation levels at 1 meter height. Before they had no unifrom height and wanted tests at "human activity" level/height.

Is it possible that air results on the roof of BRAWM will be negligible or nondetects when ground level or 1 meter height may show much higher levels due to dust and ground contamination?

Does BRAWM need to check ground level air quality for radiation?

I think so. There may be NO new precipitates from above and it is ALL coming up from the ground and in the dirt on sidewalks, streets, etc.

It's just par for the course

It's just par for the course given the cancer humanity has become. You may be pissed off, but how many of your friends care at all? Be happy, ignore the ugly, hand it down to the next generation and let that generation hand it down to their next. Life goes on. Godspeed.

In some cases, yes

The US FDA allows up to 1200 Bq/kg of Cs-134 + Cs-137. Sr-90 and I-131 limits are about a third of the claimed 500 Bq/kg limit.

So, it depends on what the whales are contaminated with. But, the DILs are only for a 1 year duration of contamination. Who knows how long the marine life will be contaminated with this stuff though.

For got to initial my post above

VB here :-)

Bill

Bill I have to agree, omg and the swimming levels, how crude. I have these visions of the entire Japanese heritage being totally wiped away by their own governing body. Sabatoge.

Half the time I can't believe my eyes and thoughts as I read all the circumstances circling around the Fukushima incident.

In a word.....Kakfa.

Make it up as u go.

Man good point bill this struck me as so telling of thesenfabricated safety levels that are being created as we type away example in case.
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Japan's top government spokesman said Tuesday that the government is considering setting a national radiation safety level for swimming in the ocean.

In response to questions about the possibility of local governments setting their own radiation safety standards for ocean swimming, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, "The government is starting to look into setting a national safety level" for ocean swimming to avoid confusion that might result from local governments setting their own standards.

Edano also said he believed the safety level for ocean swimming would be different than that for drinking water.

Logically

The limit to swim in would be higher than drinking water I suppose.

So let's start a boycott

So let's start a boycott Bill. Why don't we organize and write up some fliers and put some pressure on the people that are making money off of these contaminated foodstuffs?

Desired Effect - BOYCOTT

I had a enlightening experience 3 weeks ago. I offered my weekly veggies to a couple who were picking up theirs. When I explained that I was erring on the side of caution I saw fear and confusion. The guy just when on putting their food together, but she engaged. 'Oh great now I have something else to worry about."

Because I was a real live person, not a flyer, I was able to gauge and respond and even escalate. First I empathized with her reaction letting her express her fear. I then suggested she spend a little time to understand our radiological world, and modify her food selection based on what is going on. I suggested this very forum for news and community. Lastly I supported her reaction of fear and suggested that is the first step but it had to be replaced curiosity so she could move forward. She left feeling empowered and hopeful I think.

Achieving a positive response / delivering a solution in a flyer is a tough one. There are several organizations that could be enlisted in this educational effort. The slow (local) food movement and several 'no thanks to nukes' organizations come to mind.

I'm not sure who you are but

I'm not sure who you are but this post is incredibly sensible and REALISTIC. I hope you continue to participate in this forum and continue to encourage that curiosity and empowerment.
