Question for Brawn- EPA said BETA monitoring info taken off line because interference from cell phones?

I called to ask why Beta info is not available for my area and was told it was taken off line due to interference by cell phones? It was not clear whether they said it was interfering with determining levels, or it if had to do with transmitting the data? Is either true? All I want is accurate answers.

Can cell phones interfere with Beta results?

Brawn, you never answered the question of if cell phones can interfere with Beta results. I was told this by a EPA employee on the phone whom I had called asking about results of drinking water tests.

To be clear, I do not know if he was referring to the actual results or transmission of the results.

It appears they are removing more and more Beta information at a time the sky has is looking very odd as it did in March, with unusual wispy clouds. Our clouds have never ever looked like they do. The sky had returned to a more normal appearance and now it is very odd.

We don't know; the EPA says it can

That detail (cell phone interference with RadNet) is beyond anything we can tell in BRAWM. Electrical interference is a very idiosyncratic thing — every electronics system is different. I would defer to the EPA's knowledge of their own system.

Also, there have not been any recent releases reported that would be large enough to detect in the U.S. Our air measurements have shown over recent weeks that the concentration of radioisotopes in the air continues to dwindle toward zero. Beta count rates fluctuate widly because local weather conditions will change the concentration of radon gas and its decay products in the air. I have written about this on another thread:

So I don't think you have anything to worry about.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....t

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....that's a good one...either that, or more evidence that cell phones are bad for you????

One would suspect incompetence and even possible "covering" for industry...

Electrical interference note

I'm not the BRAWM team, but the EPA posts the following note on their "Stationary Air Monitor" pages under "Notes on the Data":

"Electrical interference can cause spikes, shown on graphs as one point significantly higher than the rest of the data"

http://www.epa.gov/japan2011/rert/radnet-sanfrancisco-bg.html

I don't know how much electrical interference cell phones cause. Or if it's enough to require them to take the monitors offline.

Where are you located?

Our EPA monitoring is doing

Our EPA monitoring is doing strange things as well. 230 CPM where I am. Concern?

when it's over 200 here

They take the data offline and don't tell you how high it actually gets. On the graphs, you see this by either straight lines connecting dots (they should be kinda jagged), or gaps in the graph. Those are when the values go over 200 here, and in many cities I've seen the same thing.

This now isn't a matter of incompetence, but active data management.

where are you?

where are you?

epa not posting beta results due to cell phone interference

I am in Kansas. I see spikes in Colorado, Idaho and states nearby to Kansas. We received one of the larger doses of 131, 200. Boise received 292 I think. I have to wonder if the wildfires in AZ are causing radiation on the ground to burn and increase our Beta.

What unit are you using for

What unit are you using for the "200" of Iodine-131?
