MOX makes a difference now

The German expression ‘mox nix’ translates to ‘it makes no difference’. The nuclear reactor fuel conversion from Uranium Oxide (UOX) to Mixed Oxide (MOX) containing 7% weapons grade plutonium does matter! MOX doubles the reactor thermodynamic and mechanical stresses and doubles the health consequences of a reactor containment failure. This four-fold danger increase associated with 7% MOX fuel represents a poor engineering tradeoff for the approximate 20% increase in electrical power output.

A similar generation power gain can be achieved with a retrofit Cascading Closed Loop Cycle (CCLC) system. Plus, there are significant coolant water savings with CCLC.

A Dangerous Infestation

The USA is presently infested by approximately 100: aging, brittle, deficient-design, defective construction, dirty-bombs, AKA commercial NPP. Each is capable of creating a 75 mile radius dead-zone; and all this for a source of electricity that is not remotely cost competitive with domestically produced oil, natural gas, coal or LPG.

These, always risky beasts are at the end of their ORIGINAL licensed life, AKA ‘design-life’ in the English language. As if the commercial NPP dirty bombs were not already dangerous enough, the industry stakeholders have concocted an even deadlier variation on their land-based ‘Death-Stars’.

MOX fuel raises the stakes of Nuclear Roulette from 75 mile radial destruction, to an interstate swath of utter devastation. These NPP ‘Death-Stars’ are completely uninsurable and will be a financial drain for the foreseeable future, even if we get lucky and avoid further mayhem. Most of the Western world is taking a GIANT step away from commercial NPP. The USA should join that happy party and discard these cobbled together death traps.

FDU-3 Atomic Bomb Yield

No Internally Consistent Story From the Stakeholders

Fukushima Daiichi Unit-1 and Unit-2 created a serious environmental nightmare for Honshu Island Japan. The distant earthquake and resultant tsunami were forecasted, but not prepared for. A large crew of skilled, experienced nuclear workers worked feverishly, even sacrificially to prevent or minimize the disasters. The efforts of the ‘Fukushima-50’ were supported by several sovereign nations and a number of private nuclear corporate stakeholders. They were unable to prevent complete core meltdown, hydrogen deflagration and widespread nuclear contamination in either the case of FDU-1 or FDU-2. They WERE probably able to prevent UOX nuclear fuel from being blasted into the air. They likely prevented extensive fuel pool meltdowns in FDU-1 and FDU-2, though time may result in some modification of that preliminary hypothesis.

Plutonium laced MOX fuel greatly increases the commercial NPP hazard, by weaponizing the reactor. The company known as TEPCO, together with Japan, USA, IAEA, NTBTO and the commercial nuclear stakeholders, have been unable to concoct an internally consistent pack of lies, with respect to the events and evidence, circumstances and/or conditions in FDU-3 and FDU-4. The Atomic Explosion in FDU-3 is the DIRECT result of MOX loaded nuclear reactor. The FDU-3 atomic detonation (supersonic explosion) was perhaps a partially moderated prompt criticality. The yield of the FDU nuclear bomb was fortunately low. The blast did result in scattering of UOX and MOX reactor fuel, (fissionable material) particularly Plutonium PU-238, Pu-239 and Pu-240 and gawdknowswhat, across a 30 mile radius of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP campus.

More Gobbledygook fromt the forum's IDIOT

The forum's resident IDIOT states the following gobbledygook:
The FDU-3 atomic detonation (supersonic explosion) was perhaps a partially moderated prompt criticality.

The IDIOT doesn't realize that he's just betrayed his total lack of comprehension of the technology, and that he's just stringing together terms that he doesn't understand into nonsense gobbledygook. His claim of partially moderated prompt criticality makes as much sense as talking about a cryogenic steam explosion. The IDIOT isn't even being original, because "moderated prompt criticality is something another IDIOT Arnie Gundersen came up with.

Scientists conversant in the technology of nuclear explosions, such as those at the Comprehensive Test Ban Organization and the US NNSA nuclear weapons laboratories have stated that the Fukushima explosions were NOT nuclear explosions but hydrogen explosions.

The forum's resident MORON just demonstrates the manifest ignorance of the typical anti-nuke, who doesn't care for whether something is factually true or not. They want to believe the worst, and are delusional enough to do so.

Additionally, nuclear reactors have Plutonium in them regardless of whether one loads it in as MOX or not. Where do these dummies think the MOX Plutonium comes from anyway. MOX is just spent fuel that has had fission products removed, and has now been recycled to the reactor as fuel. Every bit of MOX in a reactor has been there before.

But keep it up MORON; I do enjoy it when you PRETEND to be knowledgeable. However, anyone that really understands the technology, like most of the readers of this forum, can recognize a FRAUD that is pretending to know something.

Imagine someone pretending to be a medical doctor or a lawyer and is randomly tossing around medical or legal terms. Do you not think that the true MDs and lawyers don't know he's a LIAR and a FRAUD?

Please keep it up IDIOT and show the world what you truly are!

Inherently Vulnerable

NPP are clearly vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic disasters.

A commercial nuclear power plant and the associated spent fuel pools are inherently ‘dirty-bombs’ with a 75 mile destructive radius. They are not designed to ‘fail safe’. They are clearly vulnerable to earthquake, tsunami, subsidence, sink-hole, flooding, hurricane, glacier, avalanche, solar flare, meteorite, tornado, lightening, human error and/or airplane crash. Commercial NPP are not and cannot be protected from: armed intrusion, industrial espionage, sabotage, terrorism, organized crime and/or military attack. Teenage vandals or a couple of drunken ‘Bubbas’ on a hog hunt; could probably breach the defenses of any given USA commercial NPP on any given night.

Plutonium laced MOX fuel greatly increases the commercial NPP hazard, by weaponizing the reactor. The Atomic Explosion in FDU-3 is the result of MOX loaded nuclear reactor, though the percentage of MOX enrichment in FDU-3 has not been consistently provided. The fuel pool conditions in FDU-3 and FDU-4 have been concerning as a result of the FDU-3 nuclear blast and the associated sequelae.

All nuclear fuel has

All nuclear fuel has plutonium in it after it's been run for a while.

I see you've reached that age where we need to have a little talk about, "Where Plutonium comes from."

You see, when a Uranium-238 atom and a neutron love each other very much they get married and live happily ever after as a Uranium-239 atom.

Except that wedded bliss isn't all it's cracked up to be and they start arguing over who is going to stay home with the kids and the neutron eventually gets fed up and spits out an electron and a neutrino and turns into a proton. Now the Uranium-239 atom is a Neptunium-239 atom.

The Neptunium-239 family is a lot happier and more stable but the little things start getting on people's nerves. Is the toilet seat up or down? Do we squeeze the toothpaste from the middle or the end? Who has to get up in the morning to take the dog for a walk? Eventually another neutron spits out an electron and a neutrino and turns into a proton. Now the Neptunium-239 atom is a Plutonium-239 atom.

While the Plutonium-239 family isn't exactly happy about the situation they've made their peace with it for the sake of the children and the Plutonium-239 family sticks together for thousands of years.

Diemos

Good analogy Diemos

Good analogy, Diemos.

However, I doubt the forum's resident IDIOT is intelligent enough to understand it.

He seems to have a problem understanding that MOX is just Plutonium that was in the reactor before, discharged as spent fuel, and has been recycled back to the reactor as fuel once the parasitic neutron-absorbing fission products have been removed.

FDU-3 Plutonium Bomb

FDU-3 Plutonium Bomb

At present it appears that TEPCO and Japan, Inc. wish to label the FDU-2 Hydrogen Deflagration as more severe than the FDU-3 nuclear Detonation. This TEPCO position is insupportable as is often the case for TEPCO official positions.

FDU-3 was ‘hot loaded’ with MOX fuel, (perhaps as much as 30%).
FDU-3 blasted Pu-238 (Rocket Fuel) over a 20 -30 mile radius. This implies a blast ceiling of 20 - 30 miles in altitude for the Rocket Fuel, using the basic trajectory model.
FDU-3 was an atomic explosion, (or moderated prompt criticality, if you prefer).
FDU-3 destroyed FDU-4 and destabilized the FDU-4 Spent Fuel Pool.
FDU-3 blasted debris into the Fukushima Daiichi Control Room.
FDU-3 NEUTRON Radiation INDUCED sky-high radiation values in the surrounding vicinity, including structural members.

Emergency Condition Red

:(

We have no medicine.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/us_health_care_system_unprepared_...

We have no medicines, disaster plans or evacuation routes.

I remain a tepid supporter of atomic energy. That does not remotely translate into support for the nuclear power industry or the status quo. The two are as different as romance and rape. The nuclear power industry, as presently constituted, is a dangerous malignancy on the body politic. The malignancy must be surgically removed for the benefit of continued life on Planet Earth.

General Electric, TEPCO, Hitachi, Toshiba, Siemens, Areva et al lulled the world to sleep with fairy tales, pseudo-scientific platitudes, outright lies and open bribery. They have hobbled truth, imprisoned reality, distorted science and breached our defenses. They have repeatedly said that it can not happen here. But it can happen here. In fact, it just did.

Nuclear power has an inherent level of risks. These firms have deliberately increased the risks by the use of MOX fuel. These power uprates greatly increase the thermal and mechanical stresses on corroded, aging reactors. Control is much more tenuous with the added plutonium. The public health consequences of a containment breach are multiplied by the plutonium. The saga of Fukushima Reactor-3 is a case study in why we must say NIX-2-MOX. The rapid fire failures of three GE Mark-1 nuclear power plants has devastated a wide swath across Japan. An epidemic of Acute Radiation Syndrome, Chronic Radiation Maladies, Cancer and Multi-Generational Genetic Mutation is now underway.

We have no medicine. We have no disaster training. We have no evacuation plans. We have no secure food supplies. We are surrounded by design-defective, aging, corroded, over-worked, plutonium-laced, control-compromised death-machines. The so-called ‘disaster-response-plans’ assume that nothing can go wrong. If anything does go wrong, the planned response is a blank sheet of paper. We are in an Emergency Condition Red!

The nuclear power industry has declared war on America, Japan and indeed the world. These renegade merchants of death have launched an all-out offensive against health, truth, reason and science. This gang of malevolent criminals has struck a death blow to Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture and holds a knife to the throat of most of the United States. Fukushima has destroyed the Japanese economy, as surely as Chernobyl destroyed the Soviet Union economy. Unless forcefully restrained, they will destroy the tattered remains of the American and European economies. They are criminally insane.

It is time to shoot back. The citizenry of Japan, the USA and around the world, must take the battle to General Electric, TEPCO, Hitachi, Toshiba, Siemens, Areva et al. MOX fuel must be immediately banned from nuclear power reactors. All GE Mark-1 and GE Mark-2 systems must be immediately down-rated to 85% of their original design power rating. These aging GE death-traps should be restricted to a maximum 45-year operational life.

Past and present management teams for General Electric, TEPCO, Hitachi, Toshiba, Siemens, Areva et al should be brought to justice. They have become a much greater national security threat than Al-Qaeda. The tactics of the War On Terror will serve us well in the present war on these nuclear merchants of death. Lock them in GITMO or take them to the Hague.

Technical Aspects of the Use of Weapons Plutonium as Reactor Fuel

IEER SDA Vol. 5 No. 4 By Arjun Makhijani 1

Neutrons in reactors using plutonium fuel have a higher average energy than those in reactors using uranium fuel. This increases radiation damage to reactor parts.

Plutonium captures neutrons with a higher probability than uranium. As a result, a greater amount of neutron absorbers are required to control the reactor.

The higher proportion of plutonium in the fuel would increase the release of plutonium and other transuranic elements to the environment in case of a severe accident.

Irradiated MOX fuel is thermally hotter than uranium fuel because larger quantities of transuranic elements are produced during reactor operation when MOX fuel is used.

Style trumps substance

Never mind the management style. We are more concerned about the ongoing BAD decisions at the NRC. NIX-2-MOX
