Buying a HEPA style air filter

Good Idea

Your family will sleep better with the improved air quality. Every member of the household will benefit from the cleaner air.

The retail high efficiency filters for central HVAC units will trap most particles in the air, including radionuclides.

The HEPA room unit filters should be effective longer if the air is already clean.

The filters will do their job, so take a plastic bag with you to replace the filter inserts. Don't jostle the dust loose as you handle it.

Eight hours a day of clean air IS a big deal. It may be a lifesaver, if the Japanese don't get that Fukushima complex 'squared away' soon. Fukushima plants 3 & 4 may get ugly again before this saga is over.

If Unit 4 topples - HEPA

Part 2 of Arnie Gundersen Interview: Protecting Yourself If The Situation Worsens

Arnie Gundersen: Well, the report takes some time to make its way into the literature. The average human being breathes about 10 meters a day of air, cubic meters of air. And the air out in the Seattle area are detecting, when they pull 10 cubic meters through them, this is in April now, so we are in the end of May so it is a better situation now. That air filter will have 10 hot particles on it. And that was before the Unit Four issue. Clearly we all can’t run south of the equator to our second homes in Rio or something like that. But it will stay north of the equator for anyone who has a Leer jet and can get out. But I guess what I am advising at that point is keep your windows closed. I would definitely wear some sort of a filter if I was outside. I certainly wouldn’t run and exercise until I was sure the plume had dissipated. This isn’t now. This is, as you were saying, this is worst case. If Unit Four were to topple, I would close my windows, turn the air conditioner on, replace the filters frequently, damp mop, put a HEPA filter in the house and try to avoid as much of the hot particles as possible. You are not going to walk out with a Geiger counter and be in a plume that is going to tell you the meter. The issue will be on the West Coast, hot particles. And the solution there is HEPA filters and avoiding them.

Pretty useless I think

Pretty useless I think unless you're planning on living inside.

The GE drumbeat … ‘fear is crazy’ 'Resistance is futile'

.

Psycho-babble

One prong of the General Electric attack/defense, much like BP, is to minimize the scope of the environmental Armageddon. Another prong is to minimize their involvement, such as a recent statement, ‘GE built the turbines’. There is the lunatic hormesis notion, advanced by the lovely and erudite constitutional lawyer, Ann Coulter.

My favorite however is the GE inspired psychobabble. Sometimes a ‘friendly GE shrink’ offers on a blog to ‘counsel’ the curious and/or wary. GE has used this ‘crazy’ approach for over a century, beginning with Thomas A. Edison attempting to brand Nicola Tesla, George Westinghouse and AC electricity as nutjobs and killers. TAE, the actual crazed killer, then proceded to electrocute: Topsy the elephant, dogs, cats, monkeys, zebras and convicts.

The apparently criminally insane GE management, attempted this ‘nutjob’ approach on former GE Nuclear Engineering Managers, DALE G. BRIDENBAUGH, RICHARD B. HUBBARD & GREGORY C. MINOR since their circa 1976 testimony, regarding GE Mark 1 containment design defects, before the AEC and congess.

Example: Psychobabble

“The fear is unwarranted, EXPERTS say.”

“Most people don’t have a good handle on the risks,” Dr. Fred A. Mettler Jr., professor of radiology at the University of New Mexico and the American representative to a United Nations panel on radiation assessment, said in an interview. “They don’t know the magnitude of the sources, so they don’t know how to put the risks in perspective.”

Given what may appear to be chaotic or incomplete information, people may base their perceptions of atomic risk on a volatile mix of sensational reports and instincts.

“Risk resides mostly as a FEELING,” said Paul Slovic, a pioneer of nuclear psychology at the University of Oregon. “It’s a quick gut reaction often triggered by an image,” especially ones in the movies and on television.

What the HECK is a "pioneer

What the HECK is a "pioneer of nuclear psychology" ? Now we're just getting silly. Risk is a statistical concept.

Hyper-Hepa air filtration

Based upon my own research, I decided to buy the Health Pro Plus by IQ Air (a Swiss company).

This air filter contains not just a regular HEPA filter, but a Hyper-HEPA filter.

Read this link and then call them. They are a wealth of information and will tell you about this filter (the Hyper-HEPA)that they developed with the nuclear industry in mind.

They can ship this product to you, or they can suggest a possible local store that reps their air filters. I really believe that this is the best air filter on the market, but it is costly--approximately $799.

Here's the link:

FWIW, it's much cheaper to

FWIW, it's much cheaper to wear a HEPA mask + then you are protected too when you are out of the house. They do this in the Asian countries.
