Fear doesn't take a holiday!
So why should it's most dedicated advocates. Why do I get the feeling this forum has become a front row seat to tragedy...for all the doom mongering and self involved apocalyptic cheering I don't see anything positive gained by visiting it...No organization...no really helpful advice, just 'don't drink milk or eat spinach' and 'nukes are bad mmkay'. I have learned alot about how to measure and calculate dose at the cost of sifting through lunatic theories and doom boners in almost every thread. This forum is a breeding ground for hysteria and paranoia.

West Coast Levels *update* :
(Smug 134) detected at almost twice the levels previously recorded
(Fear 223) has dropped slightly since last night...we will continue to monitor
(Botox 37) We have detected higher levels of (Botox 37) but this is not unusual for California...much like the elevated levels of (Coffee Enema 224) and (Self Satisfaction 76). We believe this could be attributed to large deposits of In-N-Out burgers found across the state.

I agree this has all been very tromatic.
Bill...amigo....comrade...We
Bill...amigo....comrade...We cope with stress and anxiety in different ways. I've noticed several posters have jumped on this thread and contributed their own humor and not one post has been ill spirited or a personal attack on you. I don't want to get into a pissing contest because frankly you wouldn't like me when I'm angry. I understand the gravity of the situation and if you could just...uhh....ohhh.....uh oh! HULK SMASH!!!! (Damn those Gamma rays) Now you've gone and done it.
Where is the joke
Show me the joke in the original post. If this is your idea of funny, don't quit your day job. Comedy is not for you.
I can locate some cheap sarcasm, and ad hominem attacks but no humor, in these statements:
"Fear's most dedicated advocates, doom mongering, self involved apocalyptic cheering, breeding ground for hysteria and paranoia, lunatic theories and doom boners".
Oh, and by the way, I already don't like you.
I'm with Bill, where's the
I'm with Bill, where's the humor in the OP? I thrive off humor, and would appreciate some right now.
I do see attempts at humor in some of the comments, but most are pretty weak. The CA forecasts are a South Park ripoff. So far, the best joke made at Fukushima's (IMO) is when Stephen Colbert expressed his concern that Bin Laden's body would be consumed by a radioactive shark to become the monster mutant "Fin Laden." This made me LOL.
The Daily Show also had a "Spin That Turd" segment which, of course, featured Fukushima.
SHEESH. Everyone is a
SHEESH. Everyone is a critic...although you are right...I'm no Colbert...and my sense of humor is about as weak as a limp noodle. Sorry guys, that I defiled the forum in such an unfunny and unforgivable manner. Thanks for not throwing rotten vegetables. I guess I'm no better at making friends here than I am in real life...I wasn't really contributing much to the discussion anyways. *SELF DESTRUCT ACTIVATED* So long and thanks for all the fish!

Godbless ya Bill! :)
Godbless ya Bill! :)
I'm not a troll but I play one on TV.
Seriously...my intention was ABSOLUTELY NOT to rile you up. Just to provide a break from the USUAL DOOM COPYPASTA and paranoia. I don't consider myself a comedian...and last night before I created the thread I was paralyzed with fear and anxiety considering what the future holds for our unborn child. I understand your concerns...probably better than most due to our circumstances. I really was not trying to detract from your concerns. I'm going to let the thread die now...you should do the same...and if we bump into eachother on the forum again I sincerely hope you and I can let bygones be bygones. WE ALL DEAL WITH STRESS IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
This forum has the opposite
This forum has the opposite effect for me and makes me less fearful.
We are free to express our deepest concerns amongst each other and free to share whatever we might have gathered to attempt to help each other (taken with BIG grains of salt of course).
If information and freedom of communication over something that matters so much to us means rifling through a bunch of nonsense to find some gems of information, so be it. By the way, I'm used to that process in research. Diamonds in the rough and all that. Not everything of value will be handed to us on a silver platter! But bless BRAWM for letting us have this flea market of thoughts :)
Is it funny?
.
Is it funny, that the NRC is fast-track approving MOX (weapon grade plutonium) fuel additions, to old, corroded, defectively designed GE Mark-1 nuclear reactor systems?
The addition of 7% plutonium to the uranium fuel increases the power output by 17%. The tradeoffs include a doubling of the plant mechanical failure chances and a doubling of the health and environmental consequences of a plant failure. Plus, some of the systems have exhibited mechanical resonance (water-hammer) phenomenon, which will cause rapid plant failure.
I laugh at comedians and some movie scenes. Nuclear fallout does not evoke mirth.
These antiquated, defective GE Mark-1 systems should be downgraded by 20% each time they come up for a maximum 5 year renewal.

I am a physicist with a PS3 and I agree!
NOT a laughing matter
.
I fail to see the humor where several hundred thousand children are needlessly added to the cancer rolls. Perhaps the underlying plant disaster added 100,000 children cancers. The disingenious denial campaign has added all the rest.
Personal fear, I think not. FURY is the emotion that comes to mind.

"Not living in fear is a great gift, because certainly these days we do it so much. And do you know what I like about comedy? You can’t laugh and be afraid at the same time—of anything. If you're laughing, I defy you to be afraid."
Stephen Colbert
Am I not welcome in this forum because I cracked a few jokes? I'm sure the ban hammer will fall if that is the case. I started a seperate thread to vent using some humor..if you don't like it don't visit the thread.
We must NEVER lose
We must NEVER lose humor.

Essential! Jokes (so long as not ill-spirited) do a great service. They keep us sane, they keep our perspective, they keep us strong.

Shills, House Players and Agents Provacateurs
.
I am moslty just monitoring the posts; at this point. Apparently the Shills, House Players and Agents Provacateurs are out in force. They, governments and the industry are killing all possibility of a continued nuclear power industry.
Unfortunately, the Fukushima disaster is characterized by giddily optimistic failure mode forecasting, grossly inadequate emergency response, zero fallout protection for nearby population centers and a press blackout.
It is equally unfortunate, that this pitiful performance EXACTLY matches every previous nuclear disaster in the history of this industry. The same sad scenario played out at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, Browns Ferry and the Orleans France Saint-Laurent Nuclear Power Plant,.
To be quite frank, the cover-ups and CYA actions have significantly added to the deaths, health impacts and environmental degradation, in every instance that comes to mind.
Perhaps, someone can recall and relate a picture-perfect nuclear disaster response. There seems to be a complete inability of the industries and governments to raise their hand early to say ‘my bad’.
For example, suppose that TEPCO had made a real-time radio announcement of a larger than predicted tsunami caused by a greater than forcast earthquake. Or suppose that Japan had announced that Fukushima had sustained reactor damage from the quake and back-up cooling failure. Then suppose that the IAEA had announced that there were fires and explosions involving the spent fuel storage and multiple reactor core melt downs.
But no, the clear pattern is sullen silence, leading to unnecessary mass casualties. Thus, NO timely citizen evacuations and effective precautions are ever possible.
heh...heh....ahhh. That's
heh...heh....ahhh. That's not funny...This was supposed to be a humor thread! Sorry Bill...I was up late last night and feeling a little ornery I don't mean to make light of your concerns or anyone elses...it just seemed like some of the cliche and gloomy posts needed a little lampooning. I apologize...in retrospect I can see I was the only one laughing.
I think most of us can agree
I think most of us can agree that this event is no laughing matter, especially for Japan...however, I for one was thankful to read this thread last night for I needed a laugh ( and a good one ) about this situation. No harm intended...and I truely appreciate Bill's and others contributions on this forum. I have learned so much and am so thankful for BRAWM and all those that contribute well to this forum.
I am very grateful to BRAWM
I am very grateful to BRAWM as well...and I really do have a sincere feeling of fellowship and understanding for all of the posters on this forum. We are all more alike than I think we could ever admit...if we weren't we wouldn't be HERE. Like I said imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...Bill, Rick, Hotcaviar and anons...thanks for all of your contributions and perspective!
NHK piece on fears in North America and psychological effects

Today it was announced it may cost more than 280 BILLION dollars to scrap the Fukushima plant and pay for damages. My guess is that this is a lowballed number when suits start for commercial and persoanl damages.
ONE plant accident: 280 BILLION DOLLARS!
Now THAT is energy efficiency!!! (not to mention lost productivity due to illness, disease, stress, thyroid damage, and so on)
Don't be afraid. Be smart!
Shut them ALL down. ASAP.

While they were all laughing
While they were all laughing at us and quickly got bored, the BRAWM team decided to liven things up and irradiate the day with a special match race between radio runner Iodine-131 pitted against runner upper Cesium 137. Who won?
It was a dead tie...
Second answer- -
No one won. It was a dead heat.
Ha. Well played. Luckily
Ha. Well played. Luckily the team is probably taking the three day weekend off which is the only reason I haven't gotten banned for my poor taste and excessive posting.

Hey guys! Let me start off
Hey guys! Let me start off by saying you are all doing a bang up job. I was recently bitten by a radioactive spider. I've done my dose calculations and by my count I've gotten the equivalent of a round the world ballon trip. Everything I have read tells me this low level exposure is harmless however I have been noticing strange symptoms the last few days. I seem to be able to do whatever a spider can. I can spin a web (any size), and catch thieves like flies. I'm wondering if you think this is due to the fact that I recieved an internal dose instead of the EXTERNAL dose I would have gotten from my Hot Air Balloon?
Does anyone else ever

Okay BRAWM I'm wondering if
Okay BRAWM I'm wondering if you can clear this up for me...I think it's possible that last weeks rainfall may have exposed me to an accidental overdose of gamma radiation. Will it interact with my unique body chemistry? I'm highly concerned that if I become angry or outraged a startling metamorphosis may occur.
Me too! Is anyone else
Me too! Is anyone else suffering from gamma related transmogrification? Whenever I get angry my skin turns a greenish color and my pants become tattered and purple?
Ha, ha, ha!
Ha, ha, ha!
Can BRAWM tell me how many
Can BRAWM tell me how many BBQ's of uranium I'll be receiving internally if I eat a Boeing 747?
CRIIRAD (www.criirad.org)
CRIIRAD (www.criirad.org) tests food all over France. According to CRIIRAD’s April 8 press release in English, the US is getting 8 – 10 times more radiation than Western Europe from Fukushima. That said, CRIIRAD issued a warning not to consume soft cheese, diary, leafy greens for BF and pregnant women and young kids. Report said if a young child consumed various produce measuring 1 – 10 Bq per kg over 2 – 3 weeks, that child would have exceed the EU safety standard of 10uSv. Same report stated that for adults, the danger is not as great in FRANCE — but not the case in CA/West Coast: “Even if we imagined a dietary intake centered on foods that concentrate contaminants, the exposition levels in France should remain much lower to this value [10 uSv/yr]. For the inhabitants of the West Coast of the U.S., the situation is far more different.”
The NAACP has been
The NAACP has been monitoring levels and has this to say about west coast measurements: Smug levels are slightly elevated since April 1. Self satisfaction levels spiked sharply following the Japan quake on March 17th and over the last several weeks we have seen levels of unwarranted self importance sky rocket. We will continue to monitor until it no longer seems necessary or until the reptilian overlords decide to Haarp California off the map altogether.
