Japan Willing to Lead Talks on Nuclear Safety: Kan By Yusuke Takai

Deauville, France, May 26 (Jiji Press)--Japan hopes to lead international discussions on new global nuclear safety guidelines by offering lessons from its nuclear crisis, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said here on Thursday.
Japan plans to jointly host an international conference on nuclear safety with the International Atomic Energy Agency late next year to share the lessons with the world, Kan said at a working lunch that opened a two-day Group of Eight summit.
Kan reaffirmed that Japan aims to achieve "highest-level nuclear safety" while accelerating efforts to promote renewable energy and energy-saving measures, with a goal of having some 10 million roofs in Japan equipped with solar panels in 2030.
At a following session, he made proposals for achieving highest-level nuclear safety through IAEA-based international efforts. The proposals included the tightening of existing international treaties related to nuclear safety and the promotion of cooperation between nuclear authorities in each country.
