Concerning levels of radioactive cesium found in green tea in Japan

Since a lot of Americans are drinking green tea and consuming foods supplemented with green tea extracts, we need to be sure the FDA is testing imports.

Shizuoka, Kanagawa governments oppose radiation screening order for tea leaves

Tea Testing

Wow! Shizuoka Governor: "We Won't Test Our Bulk Tea for Radiation, But Our Tea Is Safe, Trust Us." "Testing would only confuse the people."

If you drink tea, I suggest that you stock up now!

Message to Japan: Guess what conclusions we are going to draw?

Same old, same old.

Well, if the Japanese bureaucrats believe that opposing strict radiation testing for their green tea is going to somehow save their green tea (and Ag) industry, they are truly not using their noggins.

We are not idiots.

Exactly what conclusion do they think most of us will draw from their behavior?

Hint: I, for one, will never buy another food product from Japan.

Well, at least they made that decision easy for me! There is no equivocating now that they have confirmed beyond any doubt that they cannot be trusted to sell safe food to the public.

My sympathies to the hard-working Japanese farmers who are hapless victims of all that has been wrought--and now the counterproductive and STUPID "regulatory" decisions made by their bureaucrats. Mercy upon them.

Tea growers in Ibaraki halt shipments

"Tea growers in Ibaraki Prefecture have voluntarily halted shipments of tea leaves, after radioactive contamination was detected in their products...."

So is the FDA doing any testing, or are we depending in the kindness of growers in Japan for food safety?

The farmers know that tea is

The farmers know that tea is a bio-accumulator and are being diligent. However, other farmers may not be so honorable. Since Japan is "too big to fail", green tea from Japan may be sold to, re-packaged, then marketed through other companies. Just sayin' - we probably won't be able to depend upon governments to enforce Made in Japan labeling or radiation testing of suspect foods.

Also, considering this is an entire northern hemisphere event, it may be wise to stay away from known bio-accumulating foodstuffs altogether for awhile...quite awhile. What goes up, must come down and nobody knows where these little isotopes will end up, exactly.

For safety reasons, unfortunately, I will not be buying anything from Japan - food or otherwise. For sanity reasons, I will not be buying anything from the makers of the nuclear plants themselves (GE). Since they compromise our media, government and very lives, (and it doesn't seem to matter who is in office) best to vote with dollars. Buy locally and support small American businesses, not corporations. This is the only way we can get our country back on track.

Buying food from small farms that are doing everything to mitigate radiation and other toxicity in their products also seems to make sense. Good for their business, good for our health, good for our country's economy.

Buying local

Yes, you are smart to buy local from farmers that are trying to mitigate radiation.

Something to be aware of. Not buying Japanese is smart. But did you know there are plenty of "corporations" that look at this nuclear disaster as a "business opportunity" ! They will buy the tainted products at a deep discount and take them to China for example. Then you buy the product "made in China" thinking it is safe. I am only using China as an example it could end up "anywhere" these global traders have a market for it.

I think that radioactive tea harvest, is a hot commodity right now and no one is tracking its whereabouts. The farmers obviously need the money and are hard pressed with what is going on. It very well could end up slightly diluted in your very own Lipton cup of tea.

The Japanese stategy will

The Japanese stategy will work because 99% of people are not paying attention to this. It's out of sight and out of mind. The people have moved on to other stories in out rapid news cycle. Most people don't care about this and think you are a nut if you are concerned with it. Most people believe that if this was a problem, someone in a position of authority would remove it from the food supply.

So they will drink the tea and eat the food because they will think it's OK. If it's a problem, then 30 years from now a few of them may get cancer . By then it will be too late to do anything, and the experts will diagree about the cause.

People do assume too much

People do assume too much automatic diligence and concern for public safety from officials, but most people do not think it is crazy to be concerned about food safety. Industry defenders might want you to feel that way, though.

You are spot on.
