To Tim: Re: Tuna sample

Hi Tim,

I will not be bringing sample of blue fin tuna imported from Japan. The price has skyrocketed to $60 per pound for the lean portion (was normally around $15-20 lean part and $25-35 fatty part (toro)before). The price is one factor and also, even if the sample I bring in does not show any radiation contamination, that does not mean others aren't contaminated so either way, I will not be eating fish from pacific. So the testing is merely a curiosity factor.

Thank you for showing us around the other day. And keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
S.O.

Thanks for letting me

Thanks for letting me know!

Although we don't have our own measurements on fish, we have done some estimates as to the dose you might expect from eating Japanese fish, from what we know about the water contamination around Fukushima. For most species, you would receive a few microrem per kilogram -- to put it in terms of our previous dose comparisons, this would require 50 to 100 airplane flights to get the same dose as 1 kg of fish (quite a bit of sushi, I'd imagine...).

In other words, it is definitely higher than the amounts we see in produce here in the US; if the amount in California strawberries worries you, then you probably don't want to import Japanese fish, either. However, this is still a small enough amount that I personally wouldn't avoid eating it once in a while -- if not for the high price!

Again, thanks for coming to visit and looking into the fish!
