TEPCO confirms water in No.1 reactor
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says the amount of highly radioactive water in the basement of the Number one reactor is increasing. The water is leaking from a hole or cracks in the containment vessel.

On Friday, Tokyo Electric Power Company workers found that the water in the basement is 4.2 meters deep.

The company intends to measure radiation levels of the water as it tries to find ways to deal with the leakage.

Also on Friday, a robot detected a maximum of 2,000 millisieverts of radiation per hour on the first floor of the reactor building.

The radiation level is the highest since the March 12th accident.
The company says the water is leaking from the pipes leading to the reactor, which were probably damaged as a result of a meltdown.

The pipes were damaged as a result of the meltdown?

Was that statement was an interpretation or what TEPCO actually said?
I would think that pipes leading to the reactor (depending on where
they are located) would more likely be damaged by the explosion than
the meltdown. Let's hope it's because of the explosion. At least there
could be some chance of repairing the plumbing and stopping the leak.
If it's because of the meltdown, well......

At 2 Sieverts per hour it

At 2 Sieverts per hour it doesn't matter what's wrong with it. No one can work in the area longer than two minutes before maxing out their yearly dose or seven minutes for the lifetime dose.

It's time to bury these puppies.

At this point in time, burying is not an option

As has been discussed in a number of threads here, there is a real
threat of thes puppies exploding. So, there is no choice but to try
and control them as much as possible until they cool down. THEN
give them the Chernobyl sarcophagus treatment. Unfortunately, this
site is next to the ocean. So, containment would appear to be more
challenging than Chernobyl

It was time to bury them the

It was time to bury them the day after they exploded. The Japanese are living in fairy tale land where they think they can "get this under control".

If Chernobyl and Fukushima are not good enough examples of how dangerous nuclear energy for electricity production I fear we, humans, will destroy the planet.

Fukushima will not end in a few weeks or a few months. It will be YEARS before any type of "Containment" will happen. That "Containment" will be a building that will need to be maintained until the end of time.

I am very thankful to Berkley for their monitoring of the situation. They are a valuable source of information. That being said, I think that nuclear power generation is a technology that is too risky to continue to exploit. How long until an accident like Fukushima happens in the USA?
