new 500-million-becquerel release: impact?

i was wondering if the latest release of at least 500m becquerels upon opening the doors at reactor 1 would have significant impact on the U.S....reports state that the release was made into the atmosphere, so presumably we're in for another plume or shower in the coming few days? would there be any way for the BRAWM team to be extra vigilant in air, rain or soil testing in the coming days?

grrrr.

It looks like the

It looks like the industrialists are poisoning themselves to death. And Nature isn't doing a damned thing to stop them.

Last time TEPCO gave us

Last time TEPCO gave us figures, the release was 153 TBq per day. If that is true, then this release is ~300,000 times smaller. And would be about a quarter of a seconds worth of emissions.

how long will it take to hit

how long will it take to hit the Westcoast? 4 or 6 days or more? anybody know?
would be curious to know what happened if all people left the westcoast and moved east. would be another economy problem.

Detection? How long will it take to hit? Depends...

It could take anywhere from hours to a few days depending on the jetstream and winds.

It's not just radionuclides to be concerned with, other industrial releases are just as deadly as can be found by looking for pollutant info. online.

I haven't had too much time to spend posting lately but a recent discussion with a retired industrial waste lab worker prompted a search for 'radionuclides in auto exhaust' since he says that ALL fossil fuels contain them. So far, no direct hits to studies of such findings have popped up but plenty concerning all manner of particulate pollution in addition to radionuclide release with cigarettes (had me thinking of all the cigarettes that add to Los Angeles' distinct atmospheric hue) leads me to the conclusion that there is so much in the atmosphere that adds to the vulnerability we all face from such exposure.

Can this be why some from the BRAWM team find incidental ingestion of known and detectable radionuclides through consumption of fruits, veggies, milk/dairy products during this time of known elevated levels a negligible risk?

I've wondered if perhaps the BRAWM team could find among themselves 4 cars, one that uses diesel and the others that use one of each type of octane fuel and then do a test to see if they find any radionuclides in the exhaust samples? Maybe we'd all be surprised if the results show that in fact for years we've all been inhaling along with the usual products of fuel combustion a dash of naturally occuring nuclear material from fossil fuel that in the aggregate may show that the greater culprit in the saga of medical ills is in fact no so much nuclear but particulate!

When I think of all the gourmet things I've eaten ranging from the most unusual cheeses (think:possible ingestion over the years of HUGE amounts of Cs and Sr lying there in my bone marrow as a ticking time bomb),Seafoods (think: the full complement of radionuclides ever released since 1945-(HUGE)Plus industrial chemicals-(OMG!) Wines, Beers and other beverages (chemicals used to grow and process), years of high veggie, grain and other flesh foods consumption that I thought was 'wholesome.' Add to that even a visit to Japan in 1978 for a month (they used alot of coal and diesel I think then, at least I became aware of it when at the end of each day blowing my nose yielded plenty of BLACK soot that was pretty scary to see) I as well as others like me are quite likely a real cesspool of deadly materials!

~Off my menu: All Seafoods because the oceans really are a military and industrial sewer! Yes, I will miss Anchovies on my pizza, fishsticks, red snapper, tuna (even 'chicken of the sea' is no longer 'worthy,'crab, fake crab (made with Pollock, an ocean fish), clam chowder, Nori Seaweed,Caviar etc... BRAWM Info., Common Sense, Medical Awareness and Staying Informed...

I am a LOT more aware now

Yes, this whole crisis has made me a lot more aware of the serious pollution all around us, in addition to this immediate and deadly serious threat.

It's not that I didn't have a clue, it's just that I wasn't as clued in.

But, I surely am NOW.

Tokyo Electric Power Company workers opened the door of the reactor building
at around 8 PM on Sunday. They measured radiation levels inside the building
for about half an hour early Monday morning.
The utility firm says it initially expected that a small amount of radioactive
substances would leak for about 8 hours once the door was opened.

Is 500Million bq, is it per hour or for the whole 8 hour peiod? Anybody clarify?

Why is TEPCO still allowed

Why is TEPCO still allowed to be in charge of this mess? Why isn't there an international committee taking over? Where is the world community? Why does the United States find it necessary to butt its nose into every problem in the middle east, but thinks it's perfectly fine to be 'hands off' on this? When is this madness going to end!!!!

Allowing TEPCO to be in

Allowing TEPCO to be in charge of cleanup is alikened to letting BP be responsible for their cleanup... not always a good thing.

i know...IAEA and NISA/TEPCO

i know...IAEA and NISA/TEPCO news "updates" are laughable. i agree that the "million" will probably come to light as a miscalc, "oh we really meant 'five hundred trillion', we were afraid to cause widespread panic."

i wonder where all this will be, come december 21st of next year...?

why December 21 of 2012, is

why December 21 of 2012, is that the Maja saga that the world will end?
it may be. it is scary as there is no end to this at all yet.
does anyone have a link to the maya prophecy?

beautiful. Here in Oakley, CA rain for 5 days straight is predicted starting 5/14 so just in time for this small additional plume. I hope they will all face time behind bars, every responsible person at TEPCO.

one can assume it is

one can assume it is probably 154 times 500 million as TEPCO always underestimates releases. I AM SO TIRED OF THIS CONTINUING RADIATION AND I do not understand why the international community is not deciding on this reactors as a whole but instead leave it up to criminals TEPCO?

To give some scale, the

To give some scale, the initial plume saw estimated of 10,000 trillion Bq per hour for days on end.

A onetime release of 20,000 times smaller probably won't have a dramatic impact in levels in the US.

However, the article doesn't mention what isotope are involved, and whether the release was gaseous or particulate in nature. Particuate emissions without an explosion to power them would not travel very far offsite.
