Space radiation

I was just thinking about the scrubbed space shuttle flight and was wondering what the actual radiation exposure is for the astronauts. I realize this might be a little off topic so don't scold me.

I remember Buzz Aldrin, I think, talking about raditation when the Apollo craft was en-route to the moon. Once outside of the Van Allen belt the craft was subject to high-Z particles (particles traveling at near relativistic speeds). He remarked that sometimes he would see a bright flash, even with his eyes closed. He thought he was imagining it, but the other austronauts confirmed his observation. The particles would interact with the retina and in discharging would fire the neurons connected to the eye.
