Washington State to reduce monitoring

Washington State will stop their rainwater and air monitoring at current intervals as levels have fallen below detectable thresholds:

Reduced testing in WA State

I live in Seattle and on April 15, I emailed the EPA asking why there is no recent data for Seattle since the last sample collections in late March? On April 26, I received a polite, but canned answer from the EPA, with no information about Seattle or the State of Washington mentioned, despite my specific question about Seattle.

Was I being purposefully ignored and they hoped I wouldn't notice? Or at they overwhelmed with too many emails from the public that they have had to resort to canned email responses that don't necessarily answer one's questions? I just don't know...

The Socrata data on their RADNET site today still shows Seattle's old March data for rainwater and air samples, and the drinking water data still shows a March 28 sample collection and only has a "Non-detect" for I-131 and NO data in any of the other isotope fields. But NO explanation from the EPA about why this data is missing. Does their website mention anywhere that they are in fact testing for these other isotopes in Seattle or not?

Or is their data pending and the delay is due to the fact that, as their website states: "It may take about a week for results, because of the number of samples being directed to the laboratory. This is to ensure the proper analysis and quality assurance measures take place before the results are released." The problem is: It's now been a month since they collected that last drinking water sample in Seattle but there is still no new data.

Their lack of a specific answer to my email deeply concerns me. A straight answer would have been appreciated. Are they still testing for the other isotopes? Or are they covering something up? Or since no I-131 was detected on March 28, did they use that as an excuse to stop testing drinking water in Seattle all together, despite the fact that their website also states: "To impact drinking water, the material would need to be caught in precipitation, fall to the ground and eventually enter drinking water."

Note the word "EVENTUALLY". Naturally, any radioactive precipitation that falls would first need time to enter the water supply before it ended up in drinking water. So it doesn't take a nuclear scientist (no offense intended) :) to figure out that new samples should be taken and analyzed AFTER there has been sufficient time for it to enter the water supply.

Also, though the amount of radiation now leaking into the atmosphere from Japan is much lower (we are told), this still can eventually make it's way to the US on a continual basis, thus creating a cumulative affect and overall increase in the amount showing up in the water supply and food chain.

We need answers and transparency and the facts. Any silence or lack of answers or data or explanations just makes people question and mistrust the official line even more...

If anyone knows of anyone doing independent testing of drinking water and the food supply in Washington state (and Seattle specifically) as of late April, please let me know. I know there was some (brief) tests done initially by physicists at the University of Washington, but I have not heard a peep since (their website had not been updated as of last week, but I haven't been back this week to check.) Why aren't they continuing to do testing like their counterparts at Berkeley?

Who knows...Maybe RADNET will be updated for Seattle eventually, but for the time being, the EPA ain't sharing...

Try Calling

Try calling the EPA. My husband called everyday the first few weeks of the Japan crisis, to ask questions and get updates on air, etc. Ask to speak with a manager if the call taker is not able to answer your questions. I am not sure if they are answering anymore, but it's worth a try. Good luck.

calling EPA

Thanks for your suggestion.:-) I am wondering if I would get a straight answer from the EPA by phone. Isn't that sad, that at the moment, based on what I've been hearing and reading, I'm not sure who to believe... :-(

What???? But the crisis is

What???? But the crisis is still ongoing!!!

According to the government...

According to the government, there never was a crisis!

Nothing to see here, folks.
