We'll all need to exercise our own common sense when it comes to food choices. Below are some of my 'gut' responses in BOLD TEXT.
Also, some of us care more than others about what we put into or on our bodies. Some are more informed too and that also factors into perceptions of acceptable choices and risk taking. For those who simply do not care or are ignorant the laws of the jungle apply: 'things that are out of sight are out of mind' and companies will seek out their consumer targets. Seafood companies and suppliers from questionable and known toxic sources will continue on simply because to an either uncaring or ignorant consumer their products appear 'wholesome.'
..."We’ve been assessing food safety concerns carefully and wanted to take this opportunity to share how this disaster is and is not affecting products in our stores." (OH REALLY? POSSIBLY THIS ONLY APPLIES TO PRE-FUKUSHIMA FOODS.)
First of all, we do not sell any meat, fresh seafood, any dairy products, or any produce that comes from Japan. (UMM, BUT WHAT ABOUT DRIED, FROZEN OR CANNED PRODUCTS FROM THERE?)
Next, none of our 365 Everyday Value grocery items are made in Japan.(WELL, AT LEAST THAT'S SOMEWHAT REASSURING!)
MORE; SOME OF WHICH IS DEFINITELY SUSPECT AND CONTRADICTORY:
In the meantime our major grocery vendors as well as many of our in-store third-party sushi vendors are responding in several ways, and they individually have assured us of one or more of the following:
•That their product comes from unaffected areas of Japan, far from the four prefectures that have been exposed to radiation near the nuclear plant; (YEAH RIGHT! TIME AND DETECTION WILL REVEAL OTHERWISE AND NO COMPANY OR GOVERNMENT IN EXISTENCE IS ABLE TO CHECK EACH AND EVERY ITEM FOR THE ONE YOU MIGHT EAT THAT HAS THE MOST! THE ANALOGY OF PEE IN A SWIMMING POOL OR BEING 'A LITTLE BIT PREGNANT' APPLIES.)
•That they have switched their product sourcing to unaffected areas of Japan or other countries;(BEWARE:MANY FOREIGN COUNTRIES HAVE LESS STRINGENT STANDARDS THAN U.S. AND CERTAIN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WHEN IT COMES TO MILITARY AND INDUSTRIAL TOXIC RELEASES/'DUMPING' SO THAT'S THE CHANCE YOU TAKE WHEN EATING FOREIGN SOURCE FOODS.)
•That they are closely monitoring government reports and are relying on Japanese health officials and the FDA to prevent any contaminated food from entering the country without testing regimens;
•That they are testing the products themselves, either before they leave Japan or immediately upon arrival in the U.S.;(YOU THE END USER, CAN'T SMELL, TASTE OR FEEL UNWANTED FUKUSHIMA OR OTHER HUMAN INDUSTRIAL OR MILITARY SOURCE RADIONUCLIDES, DO YOU REALLY WANT A MUCH GREATER CONCENTRATION OF THEM BECAUSE OF PRODUCTS GROWN OR MADE CLOSEST TO THE KNOWN SOURCE OF ACCIDENTAL RELEASE?)
•That they have stopped sourcing products from Japan altogether;(FOR FOOD AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH MARINE BASED MATERIALS, BRAVO FOR THEM! AT LEAST THEY ARE TAKING AN HONEST, COMMON SENSE APPROACH.)or
•That the Japanese products they offer currently were shipped prior to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.(GOOD!)
In the end, it will be your choice as regards seafood consumption whether or not it's from Japan let alone marine based personal care products.
Here's a cut and paste from an earlier reply that has led me to reinforce my decisions about products from the sea at this point in time/world history:
...there IS a history of military dumping of nuclear material in our oceans too and according to a few sources in conversations past (not just the Farallons off San Francisco) Other massive quantities of canisters of nuclear waste in other parts of the deepest parts of vast oceans have been dumped in and it is speculated that they may leak out completely in about 200 years(possibly less since it occurred almost mid 19th century!) Is this surprising? No, because mankind is still in its infancy when it comes to the volatile genie of nuclear energy and future generations will pay the price.
It is truly a horrific thing to have an old timer relate watching canisters of some sort in a military operation of aquatic disposal recount men in suits with geiger counters dump these things in the wee hours of dawn and watch the eerie greenish glow emitted for hours from such a dumping of what was obviously classified 'hot' material in Pacific Waters and then have the same guy tell you that now you know why he won't eat any Asian fish canned or otherwise.
-Off my menu: All Seafoods because the oceans really are a military and industrial sewer! Yes, I will miss Anchovies on my pizza, fishsticks, red snapper, tuna (even 'chicken of the sea' is no longer 'worthy,'crab, fake crab (made with Pollock, an ocean fish), clam chowder, Nori Seaweed,Caviar etc... Interesting...at least they are responding with a statement!
I have been calling food companies for the past 3 weeks now and have learned a great deal. One thing I am thinking of is that our food supply is a huge economic driving force for this country both here and abroad. If our food supply becomes tainted, then the U.S. suffers a huge economic loss. (duh...I know, but I guess I never thought so much about it!). At first I didn't tell the companies I was calling that it was because of the Japan incident, I thought I would be discounted. However, after realizing that I was not one of few that was concerned I started to tell them why I was calling. Most all have been beyond helpful and very nice. I guess what I am thinking is that these huge food companies should know the threat to their livelihood, and they have more power than you or I alone.
So please .....do tell them why you are calling. And call many of them : ) It may help to expeediate more response to this, more information to the public, more protection for our livelihood and health??? Just thinking outloud.
Whole Foods or Whole S@#t?!
