Iodine substitute

Can anyone recommend a substitute for taking potassium iodine - I read somewhere that kelp or Himalayan salt may be beneficial. Do these have the same side effects as potassium iodine? I am pregnant and do not want to take potassium (unless we are advised to by the govt) but I am wondering whether a small mount of salt in my meals would help. If anyone has any advice on safe stockists that would be great. Thanks.

I use a patch (swab) of povodone-iodine on my skin

however I would check with your doctor about this. I paint a small patch on me and my kids skin (2 by 2 inches) based on recommedations I have seen online and studies by the NIH which says this is as effective as potassium iodine. Obviously avoiding milk and frsh outdoor grown produce will also reduce the exposure (primarily milk but levels of iocinde are also found in spinach etc)

I have also read that dipping your finger up to the first knuckle in iodine will work (povodone iodine is a 10% solution).

Do some research on this and make sure an MD says its safe.

There is some research on ginkgo, curcumin (turmeric) and a few others that you should look into for their radioprotective aspects (garlic too).

Best of luck.

from what i understand,

from what i understand, kelps and seaweed would be your best bet...but be sure to confirm packaging dates. government agencies (trustworthy, though?) say that increased salt intake won't do the trick.
