I was surprised it was found in Australia. For some reason, I thought the jet stream would keep it away from there, at least for awhile longer.
On the Beach
We are living "On the Beach", the early 1960s post-apocalyptic film set in Australia starring Gregory Peck that was produced to warn us NOT to allow governments and corporations to rape this earth with their radioactive contaminates.
Hardly. "On the Beach" was
Hardly.
"On the Beach" was a tale of human strength in the face of complete annihilation. The subject just happened to be near and dear to Mr. Shute, as he was part of the early research into the effects of radiation.
The war that lasts 30 days was a mistake brought about by Albania making it look like the Russians had attacked. The weapons in the book are hypothetical cobalt-salted nuclear devices that spread cobalt-60 around the atmosphere which has a halflife of 5 years and is a strong Gamma emitter.
The story deals with how characters face their ends, and it also conveys the possibilities of nuclear war. However, without the nuclear sub, the story wouldn't really have gotten that far. It showed the good and bad of nuclear technology.
