A story some might find interesting (Fleeing the West Coast)
I posted this in another thread but wanted to share it wider.
I worked for a major computer company. Days before the plume reached the west coast I resigned and took my family east driving. (i have a young daughter) Keeping tabs on the plume we kept in front of it and by luck missed most of it in the deep south. Eventually it caught up but the gulfs wind patterns knock most of it back up east from my observations. I follow a lot on line, from here, all news, blogs, arnie gunderson, all the report, everywhere I can find.
It was scary to watch people on the news say it was ok and the govt say it was ok WHEN THEY DIDNT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY WERE SAYING WAS OK? They had little data, cause until it hit only Tepco might have known and I doubt they even knew other than HOLY S$^% what do we do!!! ARGH!!
When I was younger I started a job where I almost destroyed all the merchandise in the wharehouse in one second. I stood there paralyzed, having rammed the pallette racks with a forklift . Luckily I fixed it by luck or fate where pushing it back it all bent back up into shape, but had I not I would have had to just walk away. It was like such an Oh s%%% moment, i couldnt tell anyone. I never did. It was so bad...eventually they saw damage but did not know how it happened to infrastructure. I think TEPCO knows its SO bad theres nothing to talk about. Its damage control and cover thine ass. Whatever isnt found out by luck, the better in their minds. The world has to figure it out ourselves.
So that said, here it is over a month later and I am en route back to coast to tie things up, but the data and accumulation is worrisome.
When I took off, I thought people would panic and evac en masse but no one had a clue. They all beleived the media. But it wasnt a huge BANG event like I thought it could be... hits, radiation sickness...over. Its a LONG emergency that drags on slowly poisoning. Like the slow unwinding of the us economy, and letting the truth be known might cause far more damage.
So I try to stay informed and those I know, but as one wise man told me once "sometimes the truth is hard or impossible to get at".
If that japanese could send balloon bombs over in WW2 its obvious microscopic particles in a jet stream efficiently can move.
The BRAWM? team though I feel there could be a conflict of interest, but I think being students from UC Berkeley believe in truth. Nuclear lasts a long time, even if it is just to be decomissioned! Theyve already given enough data to show, its not safe. Since no level is. I thank them for keeping that going, it is honorable and they are heroes as long as they report true results and are not coerced or otherwise convinced to modify their true findings.
In my travels many expressed worry across the USand did not trust the EPA, or other govt officials. Obama went to South or Central America right when the plume hit. If Iwas him and I told people it was safe I would have sat my butt right at the center of where the plume was to hit and stand outside eating large leafy veggies. Lay out on the beach.... Then I would drink CA milk (2-4 liters?) every day until the crisis was resolved and 6 months after that.
So what to do, what to do. Go one with life taking precautions and when the data (eventually it will through social networking and people who care about people) maybe head to South America?
The west coast is contaminated and luckily we werent here for rains, but its still coming in and in the food supplly and building.
It has been quite an adventure and scary at first. I send people here, but you cant preach. People have to figure it out themselves. They are just being spoon fed what they want to hear.
Good luck to all of you

addendum from original post:
added note from original: for me the key moment for me was when I asked my boss for an emergency week off and he said "we need you, you gotta pay your bills, you gotta have a job, just tape up your house and dont let your daughter go outside" What kind of life is that? I even told him I knew it would be accumalating. Even Steve Jobs knows, if you dont have your health you aint got much....
stayed with friends across the country. luckily for me the stars aligned and we tried to have fun in our journies. many I met wouldnt have the resources to leave if they HAD TO. It made me sad and a little angry.
my tabs on the plume were models from Comprehenvisve Test ban treaty and Europe sites and others
one thing that concerned me is a family i know on the west coast had 6 kids get sick the SAME day the largest measurements of plume hit. vomiting and nausea. I know the flu was going around but...same day? it was slight cause for concern cause I read other stories on here
Im know longer panicked like the first days of my flight but I think a lot of things I used to enjoy are done (foodwise) and life may change completely....

What data did you base your decision to flee on?
What data were you using for your decision to flee the west coast? I have a toddler and live in the Seattle area. We did not have access the exact fallout amounts until the Lab at Berkeley began posting data. Berkeley labs data shows in parentheses the # of YEARS it would take to get the same radiation from a cross country flight. Years. I believe you were just relying on projections not actual data.
I too cannot help but feel unsettled by the sheer level of panic this disaster has induced in Americans on the west coast, east coast and all points in between. And our government has not provided a comprehensive explanation of the effects of the levels we are being exposed to in the US. openly acknowledged the potential problems we face. That is a failure of our government and is fostering undeniable distrust of official government assurances. If we don't trust these individuals or agencies why don't replace them with ones we deem accountable and trustworthy? In times of crisis we need information which our government doesn't feel it owes us.
decision
warning: long
I never bought the equivalent of a cross country flight BS. Getting internal emitters in your lungs or ingesting them is different. Ive flown across the world many times, I never worried about that kind of radiation.
What I noticed is that the stories broke and then suddenly the coverage just dropped off. Myself nor friends could find Fukushima news at the worst of it and it unnerved even my most main stream media buying of friends. As if it was a non event. Many planned to join me, but then the news dropped the stories and they felt less worried. If you have no data to make a decision on, it makes it harder to make a big decision as it went for them. My life had made it for some unknown reason so I could be more mobile, they all had homes and big bills.
Since there was sparse data, so I based my decision on being a student of WW2 history and having studied it extensively in college and my whole life since a kid. It ryhmes when it doesnt repeat. I also know how efficient the jet stream is. I had studied some of Chernobyl and I knew the bottom line was, a certain number of people are expendable and an economy on the brink COULD NEVER be told the truth even if it was bad. So part of my decision was based simply by what I saw with my eyes in video, read from Japan and the most credible sources I could find and what I felt in my gut. So i assumed worst case scenario, and not having had a vacation planned to make it a vacation across the US at the least and have fun while avoiding what I could. I agree the resulting panic could have been worse than long term cancers, so I slightly understand, but withholding data and forcing citizens to do their own homework to keep themselves healthy? sad
So I researched what was reported to be in the reactors and watched them blow all over all media. over time pictures leaked of spent fuel pools empty, rods missing. I was most concerned with Mox, and the sheer tonnage of material there across all storage, and the fact that the stories kept changing. BP and Katrina came to mind, Exxon Valdez, Chernobyl.... Based on the number of reactors with aerosilization, burning to smoke, vaporization and simply being released in air (and water) I knew this was not something to ignore and though it might be like walking a minefield (just being unlucky to be hit by plume hot spot) by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, I knew the further I got away the more it would be diffused. So I put a few extra thousand miles between us with backup plan if it REALLy was bad to fly to Europe or REALLY BAD, Southern Hemisphere. Mind you, we made it like a quick moving vacation to start. Living in fear is no way to live though it was obvious to me it was one of the worst disasters in the history of the world and it would be a long one. My father having been a commercial Pacific fisherman and me joinnig him many times out there, I almost cry thinking about that beautfiul ocean. Sad sad sad. I see Greenpeace is en route to monitor the oceans off Japan at least.
ITs sad to say but in the beginning I was relieved while east of the rockies to know it was dumping in rainwater back home, because I knew it would not hit us as hard the more it dumped. I warned my family and friends to stay indoors. When irradiated snow finally reached us, imho it had a yellow tinge to it I had never noticed in snow before. The fresh snow. I hope it was just my preoccupation with the issue.
So en route back I have mixed emotions. The people of our America are so nice and the adventure across has been great. But am I coming back to a great long slow poisoning? All I can do is keep researching on the side without driving myself mad. Eating as safely as possible. In the south we avoided Gulf like the plague.... now is our homes ocean going to be the same.
I thank everyone here who is trying to protect their friends and families and helping to find the truth of what is actually occurring and how we can stay healthy.
I am curious, why did you
I am curious, why did you avoid the Gulf in the South? Were you in Louisiana or Florida or somewhere else?
thanks
where was I
LA, MI, etc
I wanted to avoid the gulf because I know it is poisoned (more than gulf) and I always wanted to try cajun seafood from the South and my daughter would have really wanted to go swimming. out of sight out of mind i figured, why run from one poison to another lol
which place you consider the
which place you consider the safest?
based on data from people
based on data from people who were there at ground zero the day the "corked"the spill, i think down there is still safer (Gulf). As long as you do not swim, work with the spill, nor eat the creatures from the sea who cannot move from the sickened parts (oysters, crabs to some extent, etc)...but i think really eat any of it.
on West Coast, I think it is the first land mass after Japan to take the radiation hit and the whole food chain will be contaminated. just because BRAWM data looks good, doesnt mean some valley in CA isnt 10x worse.... hot spots.
what to do. I feel like society follows a sick cult of death but based on material things. kind of like a captain on a ship, going down with it. Why not live another day and protect the ones you love? you wont do your kids any good taking them down with you.
Disclaimer. All the data is not in, and I fear we wont know how many pay the price till many years after. The south does not compare to the west coast, sorry southerners. I love to visit and the hospitality but... So difficult.
One friend of mine said "I would rather live on the west coast in a rad suit, then move to the east coast" lol
If you are interested in the
If you are interested in the effect on sea life from radioactive discharges much higher than Fukushima, you will want to read this:

To below: If you can stop
To below:
If you can stop foaming at the mouth long enough to understand that referencing that article was not about Wakeford, or his statements, but about the effects of the waste and measurements on sea life.
I don't condone dumping either, but take it for what it's worth, as data and leave the political zealotry aside.
It is really disturbing to have shills for the industry like
wakeford saying this radiation is really safe.
There are global pandemics of cancer, endocrine disorders, and myriad other illnesses and diseases which many doctors and physicists believe are caused by the contamination by Sellafield, nuclear bomb tests, nuclear power operations, dumping of waste, etc etc etc.
One of the worst problems is not just thyroid cancer but hypothyroid disorders which effect the entiore endocrine system - it affects the brain and hormonal system and pituitary gland and your immune system and causes chronic fatigue, depression, chronic infections, even symptoms of bipolar disorder --- and hypothyroidism is pandemic. The medical establishment suggests it is genetic but the reality is that we have all been getting dosed with radiation to our thyroids our entire lives and hypothyroid disorder CAN kill you (and it is often hard to diagnose, even with blood testing which can read relatively normal even when your thyroid is defunct).
I would not trust Wakeford as far as I could throw him. I tust PEDIATRITION Helen Caldecott and the physicisn-editor (Janette Sherman I believe) of the Chernobyl study published by the New York Academy of Sciences which evaluated 5000 studies from the Slavic and Russian scientists who have studied the consequences and estimated over 1 million deaths caused by Chernobyl globally (and over 100,000 in North America).
I am really disgusted with the efforts to portray these contaminations of our planet and children and all of nature as "safe","acceptable", "minimal", "minute", even "good for you".
I am, like the OP poster, deeply concerned for my children and just so sad about all this. I live on a farm and have NO way of knowing how much contamination is in my soil and well water. The deposition of cesium 137 (and 134) and possibly strontium 90 and 89 and who knows what else is, according to the actual measurements reported by the Comprehensive Test ban Treaty analyses, are substantial and they are everywhere.
The tit for tat back and forth he said she said reports and analyses and the utter FAILURE of the EPA to give us up to date information (and the reliance on pro-industry analyses for risk assessments) and the marginalization of people like Helen Caldicott are truly all making for a confusing and worrisome uncertainty about what is safe and what the consequences may be. Articles like the one here from Ireland are just icing on the toxic cake: eat the poison fish, don't worry.
I actually had some confort from the Greenpeace site which has stated they were not too concerned about North America due to dispersion. But I have studied and followed the research on low level internal emitters for many years and still feel there are to many unknown factors to feel that my kids are safe.
If I could afford to I would go to the southern hemisphere. But we are stuck in this radioactive swill and have no idea if or when it may kill us or our kids.
This is a major crime against humanity and prosecutions are in order.
