Okay... Now, LET'S DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. [by R. Cromack]
I originally posted this in another thread as a response to an "Anonymous" poster who was taking the BRAWM folks to task for, I guess, possibly having cleaner tap water than he / she, and for NOT performing testing of his water source. And smacking that person down, which in itself was a fairly unusual thing for me to do, here, got me to thinking:
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT ALL THIS?
It's been a month, now, folks. At least four weeks since the first radionuclides started wafting up on our shores. It's IN THE FOOD CHAIN, now. It's in every cistern, very stream, every open-air reservoir, every cow that eats pasture grass or drinks from an unprotected trough. Every free-range chicken, pig, steer, turkey, deer, and alligator. Likely every farm-raised fish. Not to mention, anything caught or captured ANYWHERE in or near the western or northern Pacific Ocean, from kelp to crabs to tuna to tilapia.
It's on EVERY SURFACE exposed to the elements. It's in your house, your car. In your hair. In your pets' hair. On the glasses and dishes you eat off. Unless you have a fully capable, triple-threat home purification and filtering system, you MAY take baths and showers in it. You may be brushing your teeth with it. You may be "cleaning" your utensils and coffee pots and your kids' lunch boxes in it.
It's HERE, is my point. And if what I'm saying is scary, well, sorry, but TOUGH. This is reality now. There is no escaping it -- We now live in a free, unaware, but lightly irradiated country. It is a fine sedimentary layer that may well be readily observable to future generations of archaeologists. Trees cut down in the future may incorporate cesium into their rings. Autopsies performed on people who were alive during these times will almost certainly detect trace amounts of all sorts of lovely, exotic elements.
We've been here, a lot of us, for WEEKS, demanding answers and arguing theories and offering wildly varying perspectives and criticizing conclusions and throwing out our own widely sourced speculations. We are, ALL OF US, frustrated by the Government and the public-health authorities' and the so-called "experts"'s apparent lack of open communication, trustworthy data, prompt explanation, accessible clarification, and reliable transparency. We can ALL AGREE that, whatever this is, whatever it means, whatever the results will be, the people who are responsible for informing and leading and educating the public are doing, for whatever reason, an absolutely ABOMINABLE job of it. And their lack of seriousness, or forthrightness, or credibility, is causing even greater damage -- encouraging perhaps not wholly warranted suspicions, inspiring anxiety, fomenting conflict, and impairing the ability of those who really ARE trying to help us, from being able to do so, because of all the chaos that their self-imposed silence and platitudes and bulls--- is generating.
And now I say: It's time to STOP FIDDLING AND START DEMANDING ANSWERS.
Like I said in another thread: "You want local testing? Call up your area university or health services department, or your local water board, and start asking questions. Get your neighbors to do it. Start an E-mail chain letter. Pen a letter to the editor of your local paper. Get on talk radio. Contact the investigations reporters at your local affiliate. Call your Senators, your Congressman or -woman, your State Senator or Representative, your City Council, your Mayor. Start writing a blog. Start dedicating your FaceBook or MySpace page or your Twitter account or your YouTube Channel to running this down. Stand up at your burg's next open-attendance governance meeting and speak clearly into the microphone. Ask friends and family whether they know anybody with "pull". If we ALL -- myself included -- did that, and HAD been, instead of baiting and teasing and depressing and arguing and trying to one-up each other in this stupid Forum, maybe we'd BE seeing some sort of activity, by now."
I think it's time to stop tearing each other apart, now, and start coming together in a common cause, with a few clear and fixed objectives:
[1] Increased (hell, simply EXTANT) communication of information
[2] Vastly expanded and more timely monitoring
[3] Expanded access to raw data
[4] Clear, prompt explanations of measurements
[5] Consistent explication of possible impacts, short- and long-term
[6] Acknowledgment of the limitations of knowledge
[7] Access to informed experts in relevant fields, such as nuclear physicians
[8] Encouragement of differing opinions and solicitation of non-"approved" expert opinions
...And that's just to start.
Again, quoting myself -- the first and best sign of a deranged mind, remember: "Like Kazoo -- of all people -- said a day or two back: (paraphrasing) 'Hold on a minute, there. We're ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.' ...[I]t's time we all [stop snipig] at each other all the time and start WORKING TOGETHER to LIGHT A FIRE and get these folks at BRAWM some friggin' HELP.
"(And I'd just like to say -- I am NOT the person to "lead", or whatever, that effort. I don't say this for personal or egotistical or self-glorifying reasons. But IT'S TIME TO START DEMANDING ANSWERS FROM OUR GOVERNMENT, OUR PUBLIC-HEALTH AUTHORITIES, OUR MEDIA AND OUR SCIENTISTS. And I'm tired of this doomsday circle-jerk, folks, I really really am. If this IS a potential danger, short- OR long-term, to the health and welfare and finances and stability and even the LIVES of us, our families and friends, our neighbors, and our country, then, for the love of God and humanity, PLEASE LET'S GET OFF OUR ASSES AND START DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT, AND STOP JUST WALLOWING IN SUSPICION, FEAR, AND UNINFORMED SPECULATION. We all agree: There ARE people out there who actually know SOMETHING, right? ...Well, let's go find 'em.
"If someone wants to start thinking seriously about this, and start putting together a PLAN OF ACTION we can ALL start working collaboratively toward fulfilling, I would LOVE to hear their thoughts, no matter WHO they are. And I actually have a thought about someone's input I would like: Kazoo. I hope you read this, partner. Again, I may not like you, and I probably never will -- but I'm more than willing to admit that WE NEED YOU. Perhaps not to lead, but certainly, with your critical / skeptical mind and ability to cut right to the heart of the matter, to opine and, perhaps, to focus. And I am eager to hear your & others' suggestions, and to start TAKING ACTION.
"I would also like to hear from UCB Scientist, and Lisa, and Webworker, and many others.
"...You know, it's funny that this sort of thing might start here -- 'at' Berkeley. Life is full of juicy ironies these days.
"Oh -- one last thing. This may be 'my' post, but this is WAAAY too important to be tripped up, misdirected or just plain FUBARed by someone as immediately emotionally compromised, to use a 'Star Trek' phrase, as I am at the moment. The minute I become a distraction, is the minute I no longer serve any constructive purpose. If that happens, I ask to be told so, by E-mail or phone call if possible, but I'll listen no matter how that message is conveyed.
"That's all I have to say about this. Now I want to 'listen' to what YOU have to say. Thanks for reading this."

This is a great website
This is a great website "OpenCongress.org". Has formatted forms to send to your specific state reps, post on the soap box and more. Make some noise. Let our govt know we want the truth and specific answers to our concerns.

Rick, I've been following this forum for weeks and I just want to let you know that lots of people appreciate your contributions, including UCB staff I have noticed -- I know I do. I also think you should ignore Mr. Pick-a-This and Pickathat Troll, don't waste your energy on him. Know that the rest of us are rooting for you and skipping his bogus posts.
Thank you. That's good advice. [nt]

game over man. sheesh.
game over man. sheesh.
I'm with you on this one
I'm with you on this one Rick. Better to get at least one other kindred soul in your neighborhood to work with you, otherwise this job will lead to burnout (due to mockery, stonewalling...). But don't agree with trying to convince posters here or elsewhere to agree with us on the seriousness of this--it's useless and a waste of good energy!
The way I look at it...
...People "here" either "get it" or they don't. It's been a month. If you're not concerned enough by now to get up off the chair or couch and start dialing phone numbers, NOTHING short of actually falling ill will get it done. And by that time, it will be much, much too late.

Funny you mention this
I was thinking about this just a bit ago as I was mowing the lawns...
Where I live we have a very small water company that supplies our water, and a very visible website where I have blogged before. I've been thinking of how I should present this to get the ball rolling in this direction. I know that they won't test here unless there is resident pressure, and it has to be the right residents to exert the pressure.
The thought of taking this further up the politician food chain is a good one. Unfortunately, I'm so jaded at the moment, I'm not sure how effective it will be :-(
We risk nothing by trying...
...Except being ignored, or stonewalled, or maybe made sport of a bit. I can take it. It's a risk-reward thing.

Senators Accuse NRC Chair Of Unnecessarily Invoking Emergency Powers

ROCKVILLE, MD - MARCH 21: U.S. Nuclear Regula...
Senate Republicans today accused Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko of invoking emergency powers and taking authority away from other members of the NRC.
Jaczko disputed the claim.
In other developments from this afternoon’s meeting of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee:
* Sen. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) said banks will ultimately decide whether new nuclear plants are built in the U.S., based on the viability of lending;
* California legislators demanded a halt to any relicensing of two plants in that state pending state-of- the-art seismic-safety studies, and
* EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson assured senators that EPA’s radiation monitoring system is adequate, accurate, that it has detected no harmful levels of radiation from the Japan incident, and that she doesn’t expect harmful levels to reach the U.S.
In opening remarks, Sen. James Inhoffe (R-Okla.) said his staff had discovered that Jaczko evoked emergency powers on March 11, in the wake of the accident at the Fukushima-Daichi nuclear power plant.
“The public is best served by a commission that serves collectively and collegially. I’m concerned that the public may currently be getting less than it deserves,” he said. “I was surprised to learn from my staff that Chairman Jazcko has evoked emergency authority and transferred commission functions to himself in the wake of the earthquake in Japan.”
Jaczko had not revealed that action during a phone call or a prior hearing, Inhofe said. Inhofe urged transparency and questioned whether Jaczko had overstepped his authority.
“At the moment I’m not aware of any emergency that exists at any U.S. facility,” he said.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy) reinforced the accusation:
“The tsunami and earthquake occurred in Japan, not in the United States,” he said.” Some people seem to want Americans to believe the emergency happened here, and that’s not the case.
“As Sen. Inhofe pointed out the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman is acting under his emergency powers since the disaster first occurred.”
The NRC went into “monitoring mode” on March 11, Jaczko replied—a status that allowed it to deploy a 24-hour assistance team to Japan.
“There’s not so much an invoking of emergency authorities. That’s an authority the chairman has. Most of the activities that I’ve engaged in as a part of this response have been in my normal supervisory responsibility over the staff of the agency and my communication responsibilities.”
The senators asked Jaczko whether he was communicating with other members of the commission. Since March 11, he said, there have been 26 briefings of commissioners, 60 briefings of commissioners’ staff, and 80 “agency products” provided to commission members.
Jaczko was appointed by President Obama in 2009. According to his official biography:
Immediately prior to assuming the post of Commissioner, Dr. Jaczko served as appropriations director for U.S. Sen. Harry Reid and also served as the Senator’s science policy advisor. He began his Washington, D.C., career as a congressional science fellow in the office of U.S. Rep. Edward Markey. In addition, he has been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University teaching science and policy.
Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, U.S. Rep Lois Capps, and Republican California State Senator Sam Blakeslee, who holds a PhD in geophysics, pressed for a halt to plant relicensing pending new seismic studies. All three have the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, near San Luis Obispo, within their districts.
Pacific Gas & Electric Company, operator of the plant, recently withdrew its request for license renewal.
Boxer questioned EPA Administrator Jackson about her agency’s ongoing monitoring of radioactive fallout in the U.S.
“We know that low levels of radiation have been detected in the United States,” Boxer said. “Experts say we’re okay right now. I want to probe that, I want to make sure of that.”
Jackson replied: “EPA has not seen and does not expect to see radiation in our air or water reaching harmful levels in the United States. While radiation levels are slightly elevated in some places, they are significantly below harmful levels.”
Boxer reacted to reassurances from both administrators by saying she had once heard similar statements from the Japanese.
“It’s eerie to me, because I don’t sense enough humility from all of us here. As some great scientist once said, we think we have all the answers, but Mother Nature might not agree. A lot of what you’re saying is the same thing they said in Japan.”

...Sen. Barrass, you know, not so much.

Friggin' idiots...

Friggin' idiots...
It would be nice if there were some historical data on how the radiation deposited in the US after Chernobyl. Don't know if I missed any of that info in other threads.

oh sweet candycorn bejeezus!
stop dreaming. you're one of the most loudmouthed trolls on this site. you ruin every thread with your bogus posts, dumbed-down insights and irrelevant commentary.
and you pretending you are just some science guy is a real laugh. heh.
who let the dog out, who who
Look...
...Not to sound like some sort of Method actor, or whatever, but I just want to know one thing: What's your motivation?
Your doomsday predictions have struck a nerve. You are being heard and paid attention to. Even people you repel acknowledge, you may be on to something. You may even be proven RIGHT. Many of us here -- including some of those you have baited, insulted, and impeded the most -- are more than willing to consider what you say, WHEN you say something germane and aren't just sniping for your own entertainment.
What's the point of the exercise, Kazoo, or whatever you're calling yourself today? You yourself have chafed and ranted and pointed out the lack of "good", solid, credible information coming out of Fukushima AND Tokyo AND Washington, D.C. Are you content to just keep on accepting the scraps of real data trickling out, while you dig like crazy -- again, like many of the rest of us -- to find out the "REAL" magnitude and character of this disaster, and its implications for US and our nation and world? Or are you willing to pull together with others to maybe have some sort of POSITIVE impact, if not on how the crisis unfolds, then, AT LEAST on the information we're getting?
In short: What are you going to do about it? Keep playing games, get your rocks off by tormenting those you consider less intelligent, less knowledgeable, less informed, less able to cope with this mess, less suspicious, etc.? Is THAT what you do when faced with disaster -- sit down and point and laugh at people while they slowly awake to the horror of it all? Are you THAT much of an anarchist, a sadist, a satyr?
...Or will you, TO BENEFIT YOURSELF -- forget about the rest of us, I have no illusions about you being a humanitarian on ANY level -- work TOGETHER with others to DEMAND we get something more like the full picture, so YOU can make better decisions, as you keep demanding that WE do, based on INFORMATION and not IGNORANCE?
...You don't HAVE to work with ME, you know. What the heck do I care? I have enough friends, at least I did, until most of 'em decided I'd gone loopy obsessing over this nightmare. There are others here you actually tolerate, if not respect. Plenty of fish in the sea, you know. [Chuckle] Half of 'em are irradiated, but...
I just don't get you, Kazoo. I'll tell you this, though: Regardless of what you think of ME -- and who says I would argue with you about that, anyway? I've been pretty reasonable in admitting to my own errors and limitations; sorry, I've never potentially experienced the end of the world before, I'm new to this -- THIS IS A ***GOOD*** IDEA. I may be three-quarters the way 'round the bend, and over the hill besides, but even I see that. You don't want to get involved, fine. I can respect that. You may feel you ALREADY have "the full picture", and that this is just a waste of time trying to educate folks that won't survive a Darwinian thinning of the species, anyway, and it's too late besides. Again -- you may even be right about that, partner. So, get involved, don't get involved. Just get out of the way and let people talk. On this Forum, there's really NO NEED for you to read anything you don't want to -- I've even held up my end of the bargain, and I'm putting my name right up top so I don't waste your time, or anyone else's with my "drivel". You do what you want and God bless. Leave those of us who want to do something other than point fingers and laugh and hurl insults, ALONE.
Otherwise -- you're just like The Joker from "The Dark Knight". You just want to watch the world burn, and laugh at the screams you find most entertaining.
Oh -- and by the way -- I doubt that ANYONE here is LESS of a "science guy", than I. But, you already knew that, didn't you, because I've SAID so, repeatedly. Flame all you want -- but you won't get away with lying, not to me, anyway. I see you for what you are, Satyr.

Good advice, and I'll sure try...
...But I doubt it. This is his social outlet now, and he's just having too much fun with all this. I think this sort of disaster is exactly what the s.o.b. has always wanted, frankly. I hope he's enjoying himself -- assuming Kazoo's a "he".
