EXTREMELY CONCERNED MAMA AFTER FRENCH RELEASE
Hello BRAWM team
I previously posted a question about whether the levels of contamination we're seeing would quickly or over time get an infant to 1mSV since that's the level where cancer risk is measurable. Now I see that the French body is saying that rather rapidly infants in France -- where levels are a small fraction of here -- would be at 10mSV! I'm trying not to panic but this seems to contradict everything I was previously taking comfort in regarding the levels of contamination in food. Please help with the math and putting things in perspective. Which reminds me that I think you all had said a while back that you would be getting a health physicist involved in the effort to educate us.
thank you

Mama Should Look Elsewhere
Concerned Mama,
If you want to see what health scientists say about the current situation you shouldn't be looking here. You should go to the source, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR):
http://www.psr.org/news-events/press-releases/plutonium-carries-serious-...
I think the answer is simple
1) Radiation can cause to cancer
2) A larger dose is associated with a higher risk of doing so
3) What constitutes a high enough risk to alert people is largely subjective, due to lack of long term studies (which are close to impossible to conduct because the cancer prevalence is quite high even without new sources of radio-nuclides).
4) Researchers in the US have a higher threshold for when to alert people.
So if you want to play it safe, avoid eating local green vegetables and milk for the next couple of weeks, when Iodine-131 is mostly gone.
Actually, if you trust the french sources you'll have to avoid eating them for the next thousand years because Cesium levels here are about 10 times lower than Iodine levels, and are therefore comparable to the current Iodine levels in France. Cs-137 has a half-life of 30 years.
We are in the fourth month
We are in the fourth month of my wife's pregnancy. Someone please make sense of the new data and how it pertains to our child. We are really starting to "freak out" actually. We are willing to move to the midwest to live with family if it means giving our baby the best chance for a happy healthy life but a choice like that doesn't come easy...We are both waiting for someone to tell us that the risk to a fetus is significant...present...no longer negligible...whatever! Considering infants and fetuses face the highest risk here I would expect to hear more advice on the news or through the CDC or EPA or the whitehouse about current and projected levels of radiation. I keep about recent disaster response and this one doesn't seem to be any better...Would it be too much to ask for a sticky of updated info regarding the highest at risk...Prenatal, Infants, Small Children???
I am a mother of two young
I am a mother of two young boys and I can tell you what I am doing.
Our family has switched over to soy milk and I have stocked up on this since it has a long shelf life. No leafy greens and only canned veggies that we stocked up on. I also bought some frozen veggies early on. Only fruit that comes from South America right now. Bottled water for drinking for now. My children are getting a double dose of vitamins and will be on kelp when it arrives. I figure it can't hurt...it is a sea vegetable (from the Atlantic). I bought aged chedder cheese (over 60 days old) also. I try to keep my kids out of the dirt and dust (not always easy) and encourage them to play indoors right now. Our family dog gets a bath everyday she goes outside. It has been an incredible source of worry for me, and I cannot believe our government has not set some guidelines to follow at least for pregnant woman, infants, and children. To me, it is unbelievably irresponsible for them not to in this day and age.
Good luck to you and your family.
stop the soy
if you have boys and are giving them soy, you are not doing them any favors. Soy is estrogenic and I would highly recommend you not give it to them other than the smallest amounts.
i would buy your baby formula now
i would just stock up on 8 months of baby formula for when you baby is born
and buy baby formula that was made and packaged prior to march 11th event.
That way you know for sure the baby formula is safe. This way you feel
that your newly born baby will have the best chance at it's most vulnerable stage.
What your wife is eating would be more important for now.
For your wife she should be taking prenatal vitamin supplements anywayz and
should be not be eating seafood anywayz. Just eat healthy. even find prepackaged
foods for her that was packaged before the event.
I just stopped drinking milk and am waiting for the iodine levels to drop off
(replacing milk with soy milk) but honestly the Cesium is here to stay no matter
what state you are going to be in . The Iodine 131 is what you have control over
and since that accumulates in the thyroid best to have counter measures for it.
my wife is 5 months pregnant as well and not really changing her diet.
just avoiding seafood and milk and milk products for about a month
and until the iodine stops showing up in milk or vegetables.
I would say that there is no real place to move in the united states.
the only place safer is in the southern hemisphere but then you probably
would be killed off or kidnapped by drug cartels before getting cancer.
i wouldd hold in place.. but for the announcement of level 7.
I am concerned if it gets out of control again and there is an explosion
with an injection into the upper atmosphere. But then no one in the US
will be anymore safe than the other.
How Do I Protect My Baby in Utero?
I feel for parents who are pregnant right now.

I recommend Dr. Helen Caldicott, as she is a nuclear expert and pediatrician.
I am as concerned about my health as you are for your child. You will need to seek alternative media sources for accurate, preventative action. Moving might not be a bad idea, if you know where you are moving to is better.

You are asking good questions. I hope you find the answers you need. I don't think we can underestimate the danger to our off-spring's genetic material or overall health.

Move where?
Move where?
Missouri Rain Water Readings-Videos Available
http://pissinontheroses.blogspot.com/
This last link provides first hand videos of radiation readings for Missouri. Fallout, I131, Cesium is moving west to east following the Jet Stream weather patterns in the U.S. Be as aware as you can if you choose to move. If you move somewhere where you have access to good information, maybe just living with or near family will help you with moral support, and decision making. If they are as concerned as you are with the true possible effects of the problems at Japan's Fukushima plants.
Good Luck and All The Best,

WTF
THIS BLOGSPOT WEBSITE IS FULL OF BOGUS SCIENCE WITH NO STANDARDS OR REFERENCE. BEWARE
That is a good question -
That is a good question - where is safer?? Is the UK? Or does it have to be in the Southern Hemisphere? I am seriously considering moving but I just don't know where to.
How many reactors in South
How many reactors in South America? How many earthquake zones. Like I really wanna live downwind of a Mexican reactor....
"According to Wikipedia..."
(Possibly the three least confidence-inspiring words in the modern English language, btw)... South America has the following nuclear power plants:
Argentina: Atucha I, II, III, and the Embalse facility;
Brazil: Angra-I and II;
Chile: RECH-I and II;
Colombia: TRIGA;
Mexico: Laguna Verde, and TRIGA III;
Peru: RP-0 and RP-10...
...and a fair-sized gin rummy hand of research and other variously purposed subcriticality reactors.
(Plus Jamaica's SLOWPOKE-2, which isn't really in South America, but, whatever. It has the best name of 'em all, even the scary-sounding Russkiy ones.)

Is the Southern Hemisphere Safer? What about UK?
I wish I knew where to move. Best discussion about all of this that I have found is at:
http://www.enviroreporter.com/2011/03/enviroreporter-coms-radiation-stat...
Read the comments section toward the bottom of the page, and sign up (easily) for chat for daily dialogues in real time of how people are trying to mitigate the levels of radiation arriving. I know we are told it is small. And it is small. Just because it is called small, does NOT mean, it is 1) SAFE, or 2)Will have no health risks.
Good luck,

It's a global situation - nowhere to run
This crisis is a global situation. Radiation from Japan has already been found around the world. Best thing to do is to avoid exposure as much as possible (know where your food is from and where it's grown), support your immune system, and get involved in shutting down the nuclear power industry for good.
Helpful information about nutritional support to deal with the inevitable exposure:
http://planetthrive.com/2007/12/antidotes-for-x-rays/
And stay away from soy milk, since most of it is genetically modified, and is hard on the thyroid. I would switch to coconut milk, which is much healthier overall.
Australia seems like the
Australia seems like the most likely candidate to move. No nuclear plants and very environmentally and human friendly. We are already packing our bags, mentally!
