questions about organic salad greens, fruits and vegetable from the pacific northwest and the midwest

1) i buy organic salad greens from a variety of sources here in the sfbay area. starting to see this is not such a wise thing. is it safe to continue doing so, given the current state of the uncontrolled radiation spewing out of the reactor cores and the spent fuel rod pools at fukushima dai-ichi? i have heard estimates of 30 years and longer to get this situation under control.

2) how about fruits, vegetables, probably the same situation. and i don't really trust produce from south america, they have much lower quality control and pesticides standards.

3) this definitely cannot be good news for any of us here on the west coast or the midwest, i am assuming all of northamerica.

where this will stop is anyones guess.

This article claims that

no. don't believe it. that

no. don't believe it. that is a curious bit of dopey mis/disinformation coming out of japan. tragic.

I'm just curious if anyone

I'm just curious if anyone reading this thread might know the answer to this since I've found nowhere else to discuss these issues. If you buy frozen vegetables, how can you tell when they were harvested? I was going to buy some frozen spinach from Costco and want to know if it was picked before the food chain was contaminated. Any ideas? Thanks.

my question exactly. there

my question exactly. there are so many variables here, i am jost going to avoid fresh produce for awhile and hope for the best. i have no choice there is no way to verify the safety of the locally grown produce and the products you can get at a typical retailer or a supermarket. this is really going to take some effort.

Can't assume

This is impossible to tell until specific testing is being done. I am hoping the BRAWM team starts testing foods. First they should consider focusing on iodine concentrating foods like potato skins, etc since that is the more immediate threat, then probably Cesium, Strontium, etc. foods. If these are ok, chances are other foods that don't concentrating them are ok. They should also take a close look at mushrooms and leafy greens.

The testing has 2 purposes. The first is to tell us what not to eat, and the second is that we can use those plants to clean up our soil. Mushrooms are very useful for this. Google Paul Stamos, he is the fungi guru and has actually used them for environmental cleanup....of course that means might not be a good idea to eat any wild mushrooms.

I do not know how you all

I do not know how you all feel, but the consequences of Fukushima are more than depressing. After all, were't we always proud to have the privilege to live in Cailfornia with its natural beauty and healthy food?
This is all ruined, essentially.
Thanks to the nuclear industry, I do see a clear cause and effect here.
Those of you who shop at Whole Foods, like I do, because we are health conscious, -- all of this will not matter as the cesium and iodine and strontium will be there.
Goodby California way of life---

Only California? Whole

Only California? Whole united states! Our planet got ruined! Our kids have to live with the mess!

If you can't eat all of this

If you can't eat all of this stuff, then what is left to eat?

exactly. eating canned foods

exactly. eating canned foods and vegetable is not very nutritious, for various reasons.

What about fruits that have

What about fruits that have peels like bananas and oranges, do you think there any safer? I hear a lot of talk about veggies and dairy products, any ideas about wheat, grains, corn, etc. Do you think they'll be as bad? My guess is that anything that comes into contact with the soil can't be all that great....

Needs more research

For some foods, like spinach and mushrooms, the problem is that they take cesium up from the soil; the contamination is not just on the surface. We'd have to look up some info about "peeled" fruits, etc. The only good thing is that was studied a lot during the above-ground testing era, and after Chernobyl, so the info is out there.
