Email warning about acid rain

Look at the paradoxical message released by officials to concerned citizens who came across the email warning of acid radioactive rain:

"The current levels are not indicating possible harm to health," he said. "Please do not worry. But if you are concerned, please use an umbrella so that you don't get wet. And if you do get wet, please wash yourselves."

I am speechless as to what kind of tactic the officials are playing, trying to hide it, but then yes if you get wet, WASH YOURSELF?

This is the most outrageous thing I have seen in my life, how can we trust anybody anymore from any US official agency?

radioactivity in rain

Aren't you folks who work with radiation, study it, just a little passe' about how the rain might affect people, plants, animals, and especially children? Maybe because it takes 20 years or more for cancers to become life threatening? Of course high doses are more dangerous but small doses can also cause problems and there is really no safe level of exposure!!

Nuclear Physicists are the Navy Seals of Energy

Keep in mind these nuclear physicists are brave souls. They would probably jump out of an airplane knowing their parachute had a 50% chance of deploying and use a law of averages.

Their goal is to make comparisons because they simply can't tell what cancer would strike any of us, nor could they predict the chances. It's really simple, radiation is here on U.S. soil, take precautions and be wise. It can harm your body at any level. They are just letting all of us know that higher levels are more dangerous.

We live in a corrupt and dangerous world. You can't prevent everything, so you have to deal with what's in front of you. One thing is certain our government is more concerned about America, than Americans.

radioactivity in rain

I'm in total agreement with this. We were probably writing at the same time,eh?

There is certainly no reason

There is certainly no reason to wash yourself if you get hit by rain. However, I'd be interested to see where and which officials made this statement; please give us the source.

I have also seen emails about staying away from metals that have been touched by the rain. Rest assured that there is no possibility of metals becoming radioactive after contact with fallout.

FWIW, I happened to be watching a news conference via NHK when a *Japanese official* publicly advised to "use umbrellas if you must go out in the rain", "leave the umbrellas OUTSIDE the house", "wash yourself if you are exposed to dirt or rain"... "keep windows and doors shut", "don't hang laundry outside"... etc. IIRC, the comments were made early on and they were directed at those who chose to remain in the 20km - 30km zone.

Thanks for this comment -- I

Thanks for this comment -- I wanted to follow up and confirm that, although we (as students in the U.S.) aren't taking showers after walking through the rain, the situation is definitely much more serious in Japan. Our comments are solely aimed at those in the U.S., and if I had to travel to Fukushima tomorrow, I would follow these precautions.

I hope that official meant, "If you're still worried about contamination, then feel free to shower afterwards." I agree that his statement is pretty unclear, and if he were advocating that everyone shower after getting rained on, then I would disagree with him as well.

How about if we prepare a

How about if we prepare a little shower for you with radioactive rain and you cannot wash it of for 1 week? How would you like that, my sweetie?

That is simply not true. I

That is simply not true. I did hear that steel picks up radioactivity! do not fool us! The stainless steel has been way more radioactive since the nuclear testing in 1950 something, they are even using a steel made before 1045 or something to compare current levels with the prior baseline!

Your comments are irresponsible! If you do get wet from radioactive rain you should wash yourself! Stop acting like the Japanese officials!

Is your sole purpose to repeatedly downplay all the concerns?

The type of contamination

The type of contamination responsible for the radioactivity of metals is called neutron activation. In the reactors, there are definitely a lot of neutrons around, and the metals in the reactor will become radioactive. Similarly, metals used around the nuclear test sites in the U.S. also became slightly radioactive following the tests. However, the fallout that we see in the US and around the world is from beta and gamma decay and does not release any neutrons.

The radioactive steel you are referring to is certainly true, but this is only because of accidental recycling of slightly radioactive cobalt (for instance, in this incident discovered by the NRC).

so sad. I can see the dozens of kids playing at recess and have been in the rain every day for the last two weeks. it seems like the should have warned schools.
