FAQ question

"Can your methods detect Uranium and Plutonium?

The short answer: Technically yes, but in reality no."

Are you still planning on setting up an alpha spectroscopy test?

Difficulty of Alpha

I'm glad you mentioned that link to the Ortec alpha system; in fact, the lab across the hallway from us has this system and has assisted us with some preliminary measurements. Unfortunately, the sample preparation is quite difficult, and we were not able to see any promising results. Our lab is primarily a gamma lab, not an alpha lab, such as it is.

Alpha testing is in the works

Yes, we would like to address people's fears about uranium and plutonium. We have access to an alpha detector that is used in the undergraduate laboratory course here. We are planning on testing for alphas, but it will take some time. Part of what we are working on is how to best prepare a sample for that detector, which is very different from preparing a sample for our gamma-ray detectors.

will this detect strontium?

Your reports are making history, hope you publish and prosper!

diy radiation detector

anyway to make a cheap crude DIY radiation detector? serious question.

Look up Wilson cloud

Look up Wilson cloud chambers...This is the cheapest method of detection, but quantification is hard. If you get it working, it is quite illustrative. Check out youtube posts for good examples.

That's just fascinating!
