Fukushima impact to California May be trivial

In regards to exposure in California, when you consider past exposures from both Nuclear testing and accidents like Chernobyl, the levels from Fukushima seem trivial.

Many are looking at the exposure from the Nevada test site, but don't forget the Russian and Chinese tests that occured through the 1980s. Many were above ground large and dirty. Every time there was a test in the Pacific, most of us didn't even pay attention to it. Who took Iodine? Who cared?

Then Chernobyl comes along in 1986. To put this all in perspective look at some of the levels that various countries were exposed to:

You can advance though and even compare the Berkeley samples to some US samples in 1986. Here is a unit conversion tool.

http://www.translatorscafe.com/cafe/units-converter/radiation-activity/c...

You can see that our exposures were trivial compared to what countries had to indure from Chernobyl. If you are scared about Fukushima then you shouldn't travel to or eat food from Europe! The food must be full of Cs137!

If Adults that were born before the 60s or even the 80s are alive today, they have already been exposed to so much fallout. If this fallout from Fukushima is deadly then we are really in trouble. From what we have already had which is many orders greater, we should all be full of cancer and died a million times over!

Everyone should take a deep breath and relax for this incident will pass like all of the others. It is normal. It is so common its almost natural.

I'm sorry, but I must

I'm sorry, but I must respond to your comment.

First of all, some of us have indeed been aware of testing in the past, and have indeed made sure to be prepared and to include enough natural iodine in our diets as well as regular detoxifications. Some of us do indeed avoid European-grown or -raised foods. To this day it is unhealthy to eat German boars - and that's 1000 miles away from Chernyobl.

But the main thing you need to understand is this: in the case of nuclear contamination, cause and effect takes a long time. The scumbags in the nuclear industry (with apologies to the UCB team who are funded by said scumbags but who are not (yet) scumbags themselves***) use this to their advantage, with death and misery as a result.

My sister has had a lifelong struggle with Thyroid disease. She was born in 1959. The studies show that anyone born anywhere on Earth who was born in 1959 has an elevated risk of Thyroid disease because of the number of nuclear tests conducted by the global management team of the US/USSR.

The recent, peer-reviewed, study published by the New York Academy of Sciences concludes that ONE MILLION people have died as a result of Chernyobl, with millions more suffering the consequences alive.

So, Mister or Ms original poster, I will remain civil and ask you to please look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself who it is you are really true to - yourself? your community? ... or the people that pay you?

Alex

***I have deep gratitude to the UCB team that is presenting this data and am especially proud as a UCB grad myself. This doesn't change my opinion that the execs and main shareholders of GE and Westinghouse are criminals.

I agree. Regarding

I agree. Regarding radiation and radiation exposure, there is no such thing as non-consequential exposure. Radiation is bad, flat out. The extent of which is complicated as all isotopes are not equal.

Regards x-rays, bananas, etc. for the most part we choose these in a risk/benefit scenario. And X-rays last for a second. When they are telling you that "it's the same amount of radiation as an x-ray", what they don't say is that that is per hour. If you work outside, that is 6 - 8 x-rays per day, every day. How do you think that will affect you?

We are all forced to live with large amounts of contamination, not just from radiation. Personally, I don't think it is all by accident. You can look at it as extreme Darwinism - if you're too lazy, stupid, ignorant or obtuse about the poisons, well then you deserve to die early.

Also, if you had a child, let's say under the age of 10, would you let him/her smoke cigarettes? An exaggerated comparison? Perhaps, but if it isn't, you may spend your child's teenage years in the oncology ward. Caution is not the enemy of living.

I was born 2 years after

I was born 2 years after Chernobyl, where is my third arm? But I did live in California at the time which did get some fallout.

We already live in a carcinogenic soup, wherein one can blame cancer on a massive variety of things such as cosmetics, toiletries, paints, furniture, eating meat, pesticides, using computers, using cellphones, being sedentary, food coloring, and well the list goes on.

I myself have already taken steps to reduce exposure to some of these things though, such as not eating farmed salmon, not eating canned tomato products unless from a brand that does not use BPA-lined cans, and using natural skin care products.

And now, let's hear it for safe, clean nuclear power!

Anyone trying to justify the mass irradiation of the northern hemisphere with "it's just like past nuclear tests" is either a shill for General Electric, et. al., or a fool.

I don't think anybody is

I don't think anybody is trying to justify it. They are just making a comparison. Without something to compare it to, it's hard to understand for the layman. I personally hate the idea of getting any level of radiation doses but I'm not going to freak out about it. I'm more concerned about the the 10 x-rays Western Dental gave me when I had an emergency toothache. Also, as a disclaimer, I don't work for GE, I'm not a fool and I'm totally against nuclear power.

Good point.

I'm the anon who was born 2 years after Chernobyl, I understand the other worries and such about pre-existing radiation and the carcinogenic soup, I myself already take some precautions to avoid some of the things that are constantly being pumped around our food supply, water, air and the things we put on our skin.

It's a comparison, really, I think the bananas thing is supposed to also be that too, and I don;t know but I;m guessing that the X-ray comparison, although flawed, is in reference to an annual amount of radiation.

So yeah I agree with you. Then again I'm 22 and in pretty good shape for someone of my weight and have no chronic illnesses so far, so maybe I shouldn't judge.

And how many people do you

And how many people do you know that have had cancer today?

They have already said this

They have already said this has surpassed Chernobyl so whats your point again? Shill

Obama going to Chile to build more Nukes

Obama just announced he will seek re-election and is headed to Chile to push for more nuke plants. Want to talk about a shill? http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,14913471,00.html
