CDPH : SLO : radiation detected in Milk March 28

The Berkeley project here has tested milk and has results

it is on this site. I do not know if this helps but my guess is that it is comparable to what has been reported elsewhere from these first plumes.

I have stopped buying milk myself and for my kids. But I also have been using povodone iodine swab on the skin to provide some additional protection from the absorption of radioiodine (I read this suggested on several sites and it is safe as long as you do not overdo it - there are studies that says such swabbing on the skin is just as effective as the potassium iodine tablets in preventing uptake of radioidine) I would suggest researching it if anyone is interested and has radioidine in their regional milk products (I do) and rainwater and produce.

Question

Where did you get your swabs from?

She means, I think, just

She means, I think, just using a cotton ball or gauze to apply iodine to skin. DO NO DRINK IT!!!!!!

This is used topically. You can google it.

I just apply it with my fingers

on me and my kids

I paint a patch about 2" by 2"

There are studies which say this works as effectively as the pills.

povodone iodine

Once it is absorbed it disappears and then I apply a little more.

also eating sardines, herring, jack mackerel, (small fish low on the food chain, safer than tuna etc.) dulse, kelp, bladderwrack (seaweed)

It can't hurt and may really help. Avoiding milk too.

It is not at all true that

It is not at all true that it cannot hurt to rub yourself down with betadine. Do a web search on povidone toxicity.

I have been looking for and would welcome more info on radioprotective topical iodine application,
but only ever come across the data from the one study at hershey medical School [?]

The thing to understand is that the HIGH doses which block iodine uptake by the thyroid are for I- 131 emergency levels only, and if you take such amounts you can crash your thyroid down - and do a lot of damage.

Be sure to read up on thyroid physiology and realize that iodine products can be BOTH medicine AND poison.

And if you find more information on the subject i am very interested.

I'm using 2% Lugol's iodine

I'm using 2% Lugol's iodine solution as a supplement for my family, including young kids. One vertical drop in some juice yields around 2.5 mg of iodine for thyroid loading. Dosage recommendations are out there on the Web...

I was just wondering

I was just wondering because I have a bottle of Povidone Iodine solution for scrapes and such. Will this work also? Or does it need to be a higher concentration?

The iodine you are talking

The iodine you are talking about is for external use only, NOT for internal consumption. Lugol's solution is for internal consumption. Please do further research, there is plenty of information out there on the Web. And/or get advice of a qualified person.

ThankYou

Jack: In case it was me you are worried about, I am aware that the povidone-iodine is external and the Lugol's is internal. I actually found their drops earlier this morning. But for the moment, all I have here at home is the solution, so I was curious if this would work for temporary external application in the meantime.

Pubmed has several good studies on topical application of iodine

to prevent radioiodine uptake which is realtively risk free if you do not overdo it.

I found the results with several google searches saying it was just as effective as the pills when applied topically. i just do not know how much and recommend not too too much (I use a 2" by 2" inch patch and redo it once it is absorbed and the color disappears. Excess iodine is excreted and radioiodine is blocked if you have enough safe ioidine in the thyroid. But you need to do this daily as long as new radioiodine is arriving or coming in milk, produce etc. for the next three months or so until the plume ceases arriving here.

OK, good. The Lugol's is

OK, good. The Lugol's is convenient for small children because it can be put into juice for drinking, rather than iodine/kelp pills that are difficult for small kids to swallow. Plus, the amounts taken can be fairly closely estimated for dosage purposes, and adjusted for children and adult body size, etc. The Betadine/external method may do some good, but it appears to be guesswork in terms of the amounts taken into the body, thus is not an optimal alternative for supplementation...

Re: Jack

I guess my concern is in regards to a 5 month old. I want to ask our doctor but she is leaving on vacation. Normally she responds to my messages within 24 hours but she still hasn't responded to a question I sent on 03/27 regarding the vitamin A-E doses our children should be taking (going off research that shows that antioxidants and vitamins a-e can help repair radiological damage). I'm starting to think she is worried I am turning into freak and does not want to answer me. :o(

I understand that there is a certain level of "there is nothing we can do" in regards to long term exposure (esp. with the Cs) and that being born/living in Cali alone puts you at a higher risk for cancer (not going to bother posting a link since it's been discussed Ad nauseum already)but I am trying, as a mother, to limit, as best I can, their exposure. The only things I can really do right now is eat previously frozen cheese, drink soy milk, use powdered milk (purchase before the "event") for cooking, drink and cook with only bottled or reverse osmosis filtered water, take short showers, keep them out of the rain and try to limit what kinds of fruits and vegetables we are eating to things grown from either out of state or down South. We are also purchasing a HEPA air filter system (probably not a bad idea anyway with the allergies my son and I both suffer). But in regards to everything else, I have no idea what else to do. I am worried enough as it is with the things I consume since my daughter is still breastfeeding. It's a scary world we live in now.

Why do you think this? I thought the opposite was true.

Re:

And I'm sorry, I should have clarified. For the past two weeks, various groups of people, scientist and academics keep discussing their opinion on the estimated projections of possible deaths from cancer caused by the I-131 or Cs-134. These numbers keep changing depending on who you ask and/or what documentation and/or research data they are going from. But from everything I have read, including here, these numbers are lower than the risk of simply being born in or living in Ca. Unless there is something I am not understanding.

/\ This was one of the previous posts. Specifically, I was referencing replies 5 and 6.

And this is a interesting read if you have the time:
