Regarding number of Millirems safe for Pregnant Women: Please respond:
Could a Berkeley Scientist respond to this? Has the dosage we have received already exceeded 500 millirems? Any ideas?
FEDERAL AND STATE REGULATIONS
Federal and state regulations for dose limits and individual monitoring of
women who are pregnant and their developing embryo/fetuses are as follows:
1. A declared pregnant woman is limited to a Dose Equivalent to the
Embryo/Fetus of 500 millirems during her pregnancy, delivered at a
recommended rate of approximately 50 millirems per month or less.
I am pregnant and would appreciate a straight forward answer... i do not know how to convert Millirem and millivert.
Thanks.

The dose you have received
The dose you have received is less than 0.1% of the dose mentioned in the previous post, which is a very conservative amount. The dose you have received is less than 0.01% of the dose at which any adverse effects have ever been observed.

Call the California Dept of
Call the California Dept of Health Services at (916) 341-3947. I called and left a voice message and they actually called me back. I wasn't home at the time but I was impressed they called me back. You might call your doctor as well. I'm not pregnant but I would be nervous too if I was. Last week I asked my doctor and she said our DNA has mechanisms to deal with low level radiation. Maybe your doctor will help comfort you. I know it's hard but try not to worry. Anxiety releases stress hormones and your baby doesn't need that. Take care of yourself, we're all in it together. I hope someone with scientific credentials will reply to your post. I have a feeling the UCB people are being careful not to comment too much.
This is a very sensitive
This is a very sensitive subject and I am not a medical doctor and I do not do clinical trials. I can only provide you with some facts. This amount of exposure is extremely small, believe me. I am not only saying this as a scientist who has worked in and around radiation and radioactive materials for 20 years now, but as a father of two young children (who love to play in the rain). I understand the worry and I understand the fear, but, the last post is correct: anxiety will hurt you and your baby much more than these trace elements. The only way I can serve to reduce that worry is to produce the facts and this is what this website is aiming to do. Others may say that the public cannot handle the real data,... that this information will make them worry too much. My response to these critics is that the public not only has a right to know the facts, but also the right to educate themselves on the science behind the facts. At this point, I trust the public to act responsibly with the information I am releasing and to try and educate themselves on the risks (or lack thereof). My hope is that rationality prevails.
Thank You!
Dear DChivers, I literally cried tears of joy when I read, "Others may say that the public cannot handle the real data,... that this information will make them worry too much. My response to these critics is that the public not only has a right to know the facts, but also the right to educate themselves on the science behind the facts."
As a concerned mother, I cannot express my gratitude enough for what you and your amazing colleagues at UC Berkeley are doing for the public. Thank you! Not only has the previous lack of data been frustrating, but it seriously would have lead to more panic in the long run. People will always jump to the worst case scenario when left to fill in the blanks with imagination.
Is there anything that we public can do to help you? I live in Marin country, and will gladly help out of you need it. I'm sure others would too. Please let us know!
