Nuclear Fission Occurring NOW

http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/gcce5/radiation_10milliontime...

What does this mean for us?? I thought EVERYONE was saying the nuclear fission is not possible??

Why the HELL isn't Japan demanding help from every nation in the world right now?

They are going to destroy the Pacific.
Their food export industry is DONE for.
Their fishing industry is destroyed from the EQ and Tsunami.

This is CRIMINAL.

10 MILLIONS TImes normal in Rector no. 2???

Yes it's horrible. I wish I

Yes it's horrible. I wish I could say something more productive.

There is no fission reaction

This is a bogus story that has been circulating around. This may indicate a leak in primary containment but it in no way indicates that fission is currently occurring in the reactor. No temperature or pressure readings support this claim and the boron in the water thats being circulated through has such a high absorption cross section for thermal neutrons that reaching criticality is realistically impossible. The numbers that are offered up in the link are pure count rates. There is no mention of volumetric or other reference so there is no real meaning to the number. In addition while the numbers may sound large (they claim 2.9 billion becquerel) but converted to curies this is only 78mCi. This is roughly equivalent to a source used to calibrate instruments in many laboratories that use radiation. This is also inside the plant and there are several containment barriers between it and the outside world.

So you say but you are here

So you say but you are here and TEPCO is there and this is THEIR statement.

agree

I agree, it outrageous me that Japan is continuing to downplay this terrible severity of the events. It is Japanese mentality? They have been lying from the start to their people.
Why is Obama not doing anything? The whole world needs to react, or this nuclear disaster will make life miserable for all of us. I wish I could say something more positive, but I heard a US scientist on the news this morning, he said NOONE, EVEN IN the US expected a course of events like this.

And that astounds me. I feel

And that astounds me. I feel that many scientists have let everyone down. I thought science worked in it's simplest form by observation and trials. Since when has there ever been a nuclear plant with 4 reactors in critical condition occurring in a country that has been devastated by natural disasters? That alone should have let them ALL to err on the side of prudence and ASSUMED the worst case scenario. Until proven otherwise, ya know? So without any previous examples to observe, so much of the experts paraded through the media have gone on sheer hope and theory. With NO observable experience to honestly draw their conclusions.

I am not sure I am being clear. I am tired, angry, stressed and have just spent alot of time researching air filters and water filters.

And I feel that media has let people down by printing studied op-ed pieces about how only 28 people died in Tchernobyl and we shouldn't be afraid of radiation (BBC). Astounding. It's ignorance parading in the halls of academia and science but getting a pass as an expert and from there, people make life changing decisions about their lives.

Yes that number of 28 is

Yes that number of 28 is ludicrous. More careful estimates taking long term cancer rate increases into account put it at thousands, possibly 200,000 deaths. That's what we'll have to fear for California as well.

Magnitude of chernobyl vs. Fukushima

Even most conservative estimated of the increased number of cancer deaths from Chernobyl are roughly 40,000. That said in studies attempting to actually accurately determine a number did not find a statistically significant increase in the cancer deaths in the surrounding areas that people moved to. Second this is not a supercriticality event where the core exploded and sent core material thousands of feet into the atmosphere. Nothing like this has happened or could happen at Fukushima. The core is subcritical and the borated water will keep it that way. There is very little chance of there being measurable long term health effects to civilians in Japan. The amount that is reaching us here is orders of magnitude less than that. Just because it is measurable doesn't mean it's dangerous.

Appreciate the sentiment but

Appreciate the sentiment but most things that are happening now were not even conceivable a week ago. So for now, lets just say we don't know. If this is so certain, then there would be no need for UCB to be monitoring the air and water.

The point is not to compare Tchernobyl with Fukushima but to point out that you can have EXPERTS claiming that only 28 people died when other experts say that is nothing near the truth.

Expert seems to be what one wants to hear right now.
