Faculty Honors:

2007 Excellence in Fusion Engineering Award, in memory of Professor David J. Rose, was awarded to Professor Brian D. Wirth, in recognition of his many outstanding scientific contributions to the international fusion materials research program and, in particular, his outstanding papers on computational simulation radiation damage events in irradiated fusion materials.

Bruce Hasegawa, Edward J. Hoffman Award. Presented by Society of Nuclear Computer and Instrumentation Council to recognize outstanding scientific contributions to the field of computers and instrumentation in nuclear medicine. Society of Nuclear Medicine, New Orleans, LA, 2008.

Dan Kammen: 2007 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Kammen is one of ~ 500 lead authors for IPCC documents and
reports);  also 2007 Distinguished Citizen Award, Sustainable Energy, Commonwealth Club of California

Joonhong Ahn became a Fellow, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo

Jasmina Vujic has been elected a member of the ANS Board of Directors. She is currently  Vice Chair of the ANS Math & Computing Division, and in June will take over as Chair.

Eric Norman and Stan Prussin, with three LLNL colleagues, were awarded a US Patent for  a “Neutron Interrogation System Using High Gamma Ray Signature to Detect Contraband Special Nuclear Materials in Cargo”

Undergraduate Awards:

The Department Citation awarded to Tingzhou Fei for Outstanding Work in Nuclear Engineering.

NE Department Certificate of Excellence awarded to Christopher Joseph Wootton for Superior Scholarship and Leadership in Nuclear Engineering

In his memory the Department will hereafter name this honor 

                        “The Christopher Wootton Award”

to be awarded annually to the top undergraduate student in the department in recognition of his or her scholarship and leadership among our students.

NE Department Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Kim Pham, ANS Student President, for Leadership & Service

Binh Nguyen received the  Dr. Melvin J.Heger-Horst Scholarship and the Rasmussen Award from the College of Chemistry

NE Department Certificate of Appreciation awarded to François Gallet for Excellence in Teaching: Engineering 115

NE Department Certificate of Excellence Awarded to Massimiliano Fratoni for Outstanding Student Mentorship

NE Department Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Denia Djokic for Outstanding Outreach  Efforts

Kurt Terrani awarded the James F. Schumar Scholarship from the ANS.

Filippo Zinzani, NE Exchange student from Italy, awarded the John & Muriel Landis Scholarship  from the ANS.

Bethany Lyles was awarded the Soroptimist Fellowship for and the American Association of University Women Selected Professions Dissertation Fellow  for 2007.  She graduated in Dec. 2007.  In Spring, 2008, she was the Project on Nuclear Issues Scholar for the Center for Strategic and International Studies.  For 2008, she has been awarded the Clare Boothe Luce Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship and will be continuing her research in the department.

Josh Coleman received an award for placing among the top 10 students at the 2nd International Accelerator School for Linear Colliders in 2007.

Brendan Kochunas received the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative Fellowship; Steve Mullet continued to hold this award for 2007-8.

Haruko Murakami was awarded the Jane Lewis Fellowship for 2007-8.  Steve Mullet has been awarded the Jane Lewis Fellowship for 2008-9, also awarded to incoming graduate student, Olivier Thivent.
Barbara Wang, Manual Aldan and Tommy Cisneros awarded the Chancellor’s Fellowship for Graduate Study

Christina Leggett and Denia Djokic continued to hold the OCRWM Fellowship
For Summer, 2008, Denia Djokic will hold the Chemical Sciences Technical Scholarship at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory through the Glenn Seaborg Institute;  Christina Leggett will continue her research at Argonne National Lab.

Lance Kim continued to hold an IGERT Fellowship this year, "Public Policy and Nuclear Threats: Training the Next Generation" (PPNT) is an NSF-sponsored Ph.D. training program for students throughout the UC system. The program is funded through NSF's competitive Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) program. The Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), a multi-campus research unit (MRU) headquartered at UC San Diego, administers the program.  Three NE entering grads participated in the IGERT Summer 2007 Bootcamp:  Vladimir Mozin, Michael Laufer, Denia Djokic.

Jon Dreyer: Department of Homeland Security Fellowship for 2007-8 (renewed)

 SEGRF Fellowship Program was revamped at LLNL.

Andrea Kritcher, Brett Isselhardt and Sara Mattafirri continued their work at the labs under this sponsorship.

Jeff Seifried held an internship at the NRC as a reactor systems engineer  for Spring, 2008.

UC Berkeley NE teams recently won several major awards:

  • Grant won for National Defense

UC Berkeley researchers will be working on a new project to improve nuclear defense technology, using a $1.4 million grant the campus received from the Department of Homeland Security and the National Science Foundation last month.

  • Grant won to study Nuclear Detection for Homeland Security

The Berkeley team's $1.4 million grant - awarded after a tough national competition and potentially renewable for a total of $7.1 million over five years - is designed to develop nuclear-detection technology, improve risk assessment and help train a new generation of experts for a world that must cope with the rapidly expanding dangers of nuclear-materials proliferation.
