WA State Event - What Has Been Learned From Fukushima?
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake hit, creating a tsunami that devastated the northeast coast of Japan. Damage to the area was massive and loss of life was high. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, which was not built to sustain such a large earthquake and tsunami, lost power. This blackout caused several explosions and radiation releases. A year later, Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility has a series of events examining the Fukushima disaster as well as looking at the nuclear dangers our region faces. In the aftermath of the Fukushima accident, nations around the world reevaluated their policy on nuclear power. Why hasn’t the U.S.?

Come join WPSR for a private screening of Surviving Japan, an inside look at the 2011 tsunami and nuclear crisis. Filmed by an American aid worker, the film shows the humanitarian and aid crisis that faced the people in the wake of both the natural and made disaster. It features interviews with people affected, government officials and the Tokyo Electric Power Company. Discussion with director Chris Noland afterwards.
