Spen Fuel Pools being Cooled by Fire Dept Hoses
Gundersen explains how spent fuel pools are not configured to be cooled with diesel power in the event of a loss of offsite power. Oyster Creek and several other nuclear power plants lost offsite power and Thomson Reuters reports that they are using fire pumps to cool the spent fuel pools.

Event Text
MANUAL REACTOR TRIP FROM 100% POWER
"This report if being made under the requirements of 10 CFR 50.72(b)(2)(iv)(B), Actuation of the Reactor Protection System While Critical, except preplanned, and under the requirements of 10 CFR 50.72(b)(3)(iv)(A), Valid Actuation of Listed System, except preplanned.
"Salem Unit 1 was operating at 100% reactor power when a loss of 4 condenser circulators required a manual reactor trip in accordance with station procedures. The cause of the 4 circulators being removed from service was due to a combination of high river level and detritus from Hurricane Sandy's transit.
"All control rods inserted. A subsequent loss of the 2 remaining circulators required transition of decay heat removal from condenser steam dumps to the 11-14 MS10s (atmospheric steam dump). Decay heat removal is from the 11/12 Aux Feed Pumps to all 4 steam generators via the 11-14 MS10s. 11/12/13 AFW pumps started due to low level on all steam generators due to shrink from full power operation (this is a normal response). All safety related equipment functioned as expected. No one has been injured. As an additional note, Hurricane Sandy had recently moved past artificial island. Salem Unit 1 is currently in Mode 3. Salem Unit 2 reactor is currently in its 2R19 refueling outage and is shutdown and defueled with no fuel movement in progress."
The licensee has notified the NRC Resident Inspector. Notified R1DO (Caruso).
IDIOT Gundersen again???
Why people watch / listen to what that IDIOT Gundersen has to say, is beyond me.
The back-up diesel generators at the plant can be used for all electrical demands.
It's like installing a back-up generator that connects to your house wiring so the you can run your lights, heating system and refrigerator during a power black-out. Then you have IDIOT Gundersen tell you that you can't use the back up power to watch TV by.
IDIOT Gundersen makes his money by working for the anti-nukes, and the more he scares people with his nonsensical ramblings, the more his benefactors like him.
Quite a RANT
However, it is unclear, what Gunderson would have to do with this Reuters article. Electricity and water do not mix well. The electrical motor gets wet, there is a problem. But feel free to continue your ‘little rant’.
Back Up generators won't help if the pump MOTOR, or the electrical distribution bus, is underwater.

Sandy curtails US nuclear plants, oldest under alert
By Scott DiSavino NEW YORK | Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:55pm IST
The alert came after water levels at the plant rose more than 6.5 feet (2 meters) above normal, potentially affecting the "water intake structure" that pumps cooling water through the plant. If the water rose over 7 feet it could submerge the service water pump motor that is used to cool the water in the spent fuel pool, potentially forcing it to use emergency water supplies from the in-house fire suppression system to keep the rods from overheating.
Exelon also moved a portable pump to the intake structure as a precaution in case it was needed to pump cooling water. The water levels reached a peak of 7.4 feet -- apparently above the threshold -- but the pump motors did not flood, Sheehan said.
CANCELLED!
From above,
Sandy curtails US nuclear plants, oldest under alert
By Scott DiSavino NEW YORK | Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:55pm IST
On Wednesday Oct 31, the alert was cancelled:
http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2012/10/31/oyster-creek-nuclear-plant-n...
So we had an "alert" ( 2nd lowest on the scale ) from late Tuesday to Wednesday.
The plant was already shutdown so forced cooling needs were at a minimum.
Ever hear of sealed motors???
The motors used in these applications are sealed.
Have you ever seen a submersible well pump? It's like that.
Electricity and water can co-exist. Courtesy of Sears:

Pumps like the above sit at the BOTTOM of a water well and are submersed in water even though they are powered by 230V electric supply.
Try again with some thought next time.
I repeat
Your reading/comprehension/retention remains weak

Not in New Jersey
The New Jersey NUKE does not have a submersible system.
Submersibles have been in existence for decades.
But the electrical bus of concern was NOT submersible.
More dangerous, weak 'engineering', 'design', 'architecture' and 'construction'.
Hell, even YOU know that more resilient equipment is available.
It is simply not SPECIFIED!
Fascinating how the text
Fascinating how the text changes between Arne's website and your post.
Arne's Website: "Thomson Reuters reports that they may use fire pumps to cool the pools. "
Your post: "Thomson Reuters reports that they are using fire pumps to cool the spent fuel pools."
Proof in the words
That raving lune is at it again can't speak with knowledge or appropriate text.
"I urge UCB to ban this raving lune from this forum." I am speaking of the guy talking about IDIOTS in all caps and bold.
I don't see why...
I don't see why anyone would ban someone for calling Gundersen an idiot.
Gundersen is an idiot. He's been wrong about everything he's said.
For example, Gundersen wrote a letter to the community leaders of a town near the San Onofre plant. He estimated a 60% monthly chance of a particular event occurring. He then stated the chance over 6 months was 6 * 60% = 360%
Any high school student that has taken mathematics should know that you don't multiply probabilities like that. The formula he should have used was 1 - (1 - 60%)^6
What really shows Gundersen to be an idiot is that probabilities are bounded by the range 0% to 100% There's no such thing as a 360% probability.
The poster above that calls Gundersen an idiot is 100% correct; and nobody should be banned for being 100% correct.
Maybe it's Gundersen
Maybe the person that wants the guy banned for calling Gundersen an idiot is Gundersen himself.
Gundersen has been known to post his scientifically ignorant crap on this forum.
Maybe he's monitoring and wants someone banned because Gundersen knows he can't stand up to anyone that knows his science in a fair fight.
Gundersen is an idiot.
Doubtful
It is rather doubtful, that 'Gunny' is playing silly games.
Perhaps you should step back sir.
You appear to be 'stepping on your crank'.
Never a good thing!
