Radioactive Iodine from Fukushima Found in California Kelp

radioactivity (cesium) NOT found in Northern California Kelp

Just so you know, there was NO CESIUM of any kind found in Northern California Kelp last year. I am a seaweed harvester and I tested my seaweed twice. I am testing again this year.
For those who keep harping on this, I am not sure what you are talking about. Northern California seaweed is safe. What about your high fructose corn syrup drink being safe?????

Radiation detectable in seafood/crops from cesium 134

The testing can determine if there is recent exposure, bioabsorption of cesium 134, as I understand it Yes the iodine would be gone but tissue would still probably have cesium in it.

The Radiation and Public Health Project tested lobsters from Long Island Sound and found Lobsters were FULL of strontium 90 (at levels equivalent to the amounts found children's teeth at Chernobyl) in their SOFT tissues.

Polar bears and seals are sick and dying in the arctic from hair loss and skin lesions.

Why is there no new testing by BRAWM???

Testing for cesium 134 and strontium 90 would answer some of these questions. YES there was already cesium 137 in the food chain from previous years, but cesium 134 (unless I am reversing the two) can only be recent.

Let me get this straight. I

Let me get this straight.
I hear lots of news reports that radioactive iodine from Fukushima was found in California kelp. (as well as some other disturbing information emerging)
I do some research.
I come to this site.
I read the remarks here.
AND THERE ARE APOLOGISTS?
Worse yet, attacking the person who posted the info?! WTF?

Lol. We already know that

Lol.

We already know that there was radioactive I-131 in the rain that reached the west coast.

Therefore we already know that I-131 rained into the ocean off the california coast.

Therefore we already know that marine life will have had some exposure. Especially, things like kelp that preferentially take up Iodine.

And because we already know that the half-life of I-131 is 8 days we know that if there was X Bequerels/kg of I-131 in the kelp 10 months ago, then there is now X time 2.^(-300./8.) or 0.000000000005 X still in the kelp today.

Thus this is a complete non-story.

"a complete non story" Same

"a complete non story"
Same ole song.... Nobody's listening to you bud. You have no credibility.

Scientific research

Scientific research apparently takes time and money/grants / graduate students ect. this study is only the first of many i hope.it raises some big questions .with countinued releases to sea in Japan and evaporation seeming to be end game for stored water .saw a expert on CNN he said basically all the waste water will be cleaned as much as possible but it will end up put in sea or evaporated .i imagine times three reactors this contamination is bound to get worse.

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Scientist-Study-Nuclear-Contamin...
"Two scientists who found radiation in sea kelp along the Southern California coast after Japan’s 2011 tsunami-induced nuclear disaster now hope to study whether contamination may be present in fish such as opaleye and other ocean creatures, including lobster and sea urchin."

Too Late..

Too late..

If they're going to be looking for radioactive Iodine, I-131, in fish; then they are too late. I-131 has a half-life of 8 days; so all the Fukushima I-131 was all gone by last summer. Nothing left in the fish to study; it's all decayed away by now.

But that doesn't stop the propagandists from attempting to make hay.

Scientific research is

Scientific research is propagandists ? I bet you can't even explain what do you mean" attempting to make hay" get a clue,Read the article!these are not some anti nuke dimwits these are scientists doing research just like ucb has done. I am certain they know the half lives of all radionuclides...

Manley and his co-author,

Manley and his co-author, marine biology professor Chris Lowe, hope next to find out whether other kinds of nuclear contamination – two radioisotopes of cesium that break down much more slowly than the Iodine-131 – are found in California marine life, including kelp and fish.

It will be difficult

This will be difficult because kelp and fish are already contaminated with cesium due to almost two decades of atmospheric nuclear testing. Not impossible; but difficult because they have to discriminate between cesium due to nuclear testing and cesium due to Fukushima.

The I-131 is easy. All the I-131 from the decades of atmospheric nuclear testing has all decayed away due to the short half-life of I-131. The cesium isotopes have a much longer half-life, and haven't all decayed away. So any I-131 detected, we can say came from Fukushima. With cesium, you can't say that.

It will take a very precise evaluation of how much of each of the isotopes is in a given sample. This type of analysis is routinely done by CAMS - Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory:

https://cams.llnl.gov/

which is a very significant facility with lots of professionals in the field of isotopic analysis.

Without the facilities and expertise of a center like CAMS; the analysis based on cesium isotopes may be a dubious undertaking for a couple of biologists.

Correction ---- cesium 134 has a half life of 2 years and can be directly traced to Fukushima daiichi there is no mabye here it's certain fact .there also is a ratio of cesium 134 to cesium 137 that has been observed In soil tests and food tests posted here as fact ..

It is certain the industry would love it if your post was true but it is simply false.

"It is certain the industry

"It is certain the industry would love it if your post was true but it is simply false"

...A LOT of people "would love it". I'D "love it". Reassurance and confidence in our security is something to be desired. Unless those things don't fit your agenda, of course.

unless...

the continuous and copious continued leakage is STILL building up...?

NOPE!!!

It doesn't matter if Fukushima is leaking or not.

Only an operating reactor can make new Iodine-131.

The only Iodine-131 in Fukushima is Iodine-131 that was made prior to the earthquake. ALL of that Iodine-131 is gone now; it has all decayed away to stable Xenon-131.

So it doesn't matter if the reactors at Fukushima are leaking or not; they no longer have ANY Iodine-131 in them. It has all decayed away.

we find this out a year later?

I left CA for 5 months an got my family thousands of miles away after Fuku (from Santa Cruz). Now we find out what I assumed. Funny thing is one person I spoke to was running days to a month after Fukushima and reported feeling very ill (in 20s). Whether or not related, again I think the truth would have caused panic. Imagine all the panic on personal levels this will effect (millions?) of people over the long haul.

Not to mention the current ongoing problems... and it all comes down to money.

You actually moved because of this?

People are blowing this way out of proportion.

The person from Santa Cruz

The person from Santa Cruz who moved, like me and many many others, knew that all this information would start slowly emerging. A wise man trusts his instincts - they are never wrong, as we are finding out now.
Buckle up. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

Just ignore him...

Just ignore the dude with the bold print harassing every post that is no pro-nulcear.

He does not know what he is talking about.

Really. So, tell us, "wise

Really. So, tell us, "wise man": What's next?
