Once upon a time
ALL the children love fary tales. Nuclear Safety is a fairy tale, not reality.
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away; there lived a wise and benevolent King Usa. King Usa captured and tamed all the fiery dragons in the land. His favorites were Urania and Plutonea. King Usa sent Urania and Plutonea to the Kingdom Nipponia to free the children from an evil warlord and restore peace and beauty to the land in a ferocious battle. King Usa then sent his magician GeeWhiz to Nipponia so that their dragons could also be tamed and put to work, keeping all the children warm and happy.

“Incidentally, the Chernobyl power plant had a terrible design. It didn't even have a containment building, like we have in the US. If it did, there may very well have been virtually no deaths. So is it fair to think of US Nuclear Power plants in terms of Chernobyl?”
And they lived happily ever after, because the Wizards of Nipponia, built warm and safe dens for their dragons.
Oops! But one of the Wizards, named Tepico, became lazy and began to mistreat the dragons in a hamlet near the sea. Tepico did not give the dragons enough cool water, and even gave Dragon FDU-3 food that was too hot. A wild dragon, in the sea, by the name of Neptunia was sad; and rose up and freed three of the dragons. They were very angry.

But one of the Wizards, named Tepico, became lazy and began to mistreat the dragons in a hamlet near the sea. Tepico did not give the dragons enough cool water to drink, and even gave Dragon F3DU food that was too spicy for dragons. A wild dragon, in the sea, by the name of Neptunia heard their cries of distress. Neptunia rose up and freed three of the dragons. The dragons were named F3DO, F1DO and F2DO. The three dragons were very angry, because of their mistreatment, by the foolish and evil Tepico.

And all the children of Nipponia were very sad! Their schools were closed. The little boys and girls could not go outside and play. Their food became poisonous and their water became too dangerous to drink. Many were sick and had to leave their homes. The air became foul. The birds were too weak to fly or even finish their songs. The angry dragon F3DU and his sisters F1DU and F2DU scorched all the land. It was all very, very sad.

So much for the somewhat Grimm - NPP Faerie Tale of Dr. Muller; and on to the Real World as depicted in the Photo Gallery. http://www.google.com/search?q=fukushima+nuclear+explosion+photo&hl=en&t
Let us examine the REALITY of the so-called, General Electric Mark-1 'Containment Building'. Did the GE Mark-1 ‘containment buildings’ actually contain ... anything at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station?
Is there a substantial difference, or merely a meaningless distinction, between the Chernobyl Carbon Explosion and the FDU-1 and FDU-2 Zirconia-H2 Explosions? The LATTER, I rather think.
Is it a SOUND engineering practice to POSITION the Spent Fuel Pool, above and near the reactor, in the GE Mark-1 'containment building'? Again, we must conclude, on the basis of the photographic evidence that the answser is a resounding NEGATIVE! Placing TONS of HOT nuclear waste, proximal to an explosion-prone nuclear reactor, may be reasonably characterized as the MOST DANGEROUS DESIGN in human history.

Great stuff, sir ...
Both HIGHLY entertaining ... and highly infuriating
Let's hope some superhero emerges and saves all the children from these evil, despicable dragons...

The Tenth Report of the Fukushima Prefecture Health Management Survey, released earlier this week, with data up to January 21, 2013, revealed that 44.2 percent of 94,975 children sampled had thyroid ultrasound abnormalities. The number of abnormalities has also been increasing over time as well as the proportion of children with nodules equal to and larger than 5.1 mm and any size cysts have increased.
The report has also revealed that 10 of 186 eligible are suspected of having thyroid cancer as a result of the exposed radiation. On Wednesday, the Fukushima Prefectural Government announced that two people who were teenagers at the time of the Fukushima No. 1 meltdown have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, bringing the total number of cases officially confirmed by authorities to three. All have undergone surgery and are now recovering.

In the meantime on Friday, a government-backed researcher claimed that no health effects have been detected in people living in the contaminated area because the radiation level is not high enough. “Since the accident in Fukushima, no health effects from radiation have been observed, although we have heard reports some people fell ill due to stress from living as evacuees and due to worries and fears about radiation,” Kazuo Sakai of Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences has said.
Thanks
Perhaps,
Perhaps the Muse will share some additional episodes of advanced physics faerie tales for 1st graders and their parents.
