Lost Water Circulation

Lost Circulation

Using the jargon of the O&G drilling industry, TEPCO has ‘lost circulation’. This is evidenced by increased water VOLUME and reduced water ALTITUDE (level = altitude above sea level). It is probably further evidenced by reduced back PRESSURE on the pump side. TEPCO, JAPAN and the PRESS would NOT allow this information out, if they KNEW what was happening.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station is “PRODUCING 400 tons of contaminated water per day, because groundwater is entering”.

http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2012/08/179768.html

The water LEVEL “dropped below the minimum required level twice on the previous day”.

-----

“Something stuck in the pipes”, would INCREASE back pressure on the water injection pumps.

The bathtub has a hole in it, AND water is coming into that hole. So you have INCREASED water volume, DECREASED water level AND DECREASED pump output pressure.

The Japanese government is advised to focus on the REAL problem, rather than the perceived problem.

What Me Worry?

It sometimes appears that Alfred E. Newman of Mad Magazine authors the TEPCO Fukushima Chronicles. “What Me Worry?”; says Alfred as the latest unprecedented nuclear reactor event takes place.

One or more corium slugs may now be working their way downgrade toward the Fukushima NPP harbor. This might, depending upon the corium trajectory, eventually result in steam releases nearer the water. Rock temperature and radiation levels would increase, until a blinding white mass emerges. This could occur above, at or below the harbor water level.

But otherwise, the situation Fukushima Daiichi NPP remains normal. Perhaps the fish-net, or retainer dam, will stop the corium descent into the open Pacific.

TEPCO reports power failure at Fukushima, stops cooling system

Published time: March 18, 2013 17:36

Meanwhile, no abnormality has been detected in radiation levels in areas surrounding the plant in Fukushima Prefecture. However, the day before TEPCO issued a worrying report saying it had discovered a record 740,000 Becquerels per kilogram of radioactive caesium in fish caught in the waters near the crippled Fukushima plant, two years after the nuclear disaster. The operator installed a net on the seafloor of the port exit near the plant to prevent the fish from escaping.

Not Decreasing

Radiation levels are not decreasing in the Pacific.

The Japanese in general and more particularly TEPCO and Japan Inc. tend to say that ‘Radiation levels are not decreasing’. That is their method of saying that ‘Radiation levels are INCREASING’.

The Japanese are more likely to state that the TOTAL radio-cesium is 740,000 Becquerels; than to clearly state that the Cs-134 is 370,000 Bq/kg (ongoing fission) or 246,667 Bq/kg (normal decay). This is particularly the case when fission is ongoing.

They are culturally unlikely to clearly state that the THREE corium slugs are tracking at an average 52 degree angle from horizontal and are on CONVERGING paths. Japan is most unlikely to announce that fission levels in the corium are increasing. Most likely, Murphy’s Law is more predictive than Japan, Inc. press releases.

Bad news is impolite and failure is unacceptable

Bill's Effort Is Appreciated

Thanks Bill, for taking the time to post what you have found and your discussions. This is a tough forum, as well meaning people are constantly harassed by those who offer nothing of substance. The best they can do is to condescend to name calling and unsuccessful, childish attempts to discredit authors instead of their data. Their action is the last bastion of those who have already lost their position because they have no data to offer in rebuttal. There are many of us who are in fact reading your posts and we could do without unsubstantiated detractor's posts suggesting otherwise. Thank you again for your efforts

Out of the Loop

Dear Anony:

You would be quite quite uninformed, or perhaps utterly delusional, IFF you think that is the case.

But thanks for trying.

This is one of those unfortunate circumstances, when one would prefer to be mistaken; but the evidence points directly at some version of a 'China Syndrome'. FDU-3 is (by far) the most likely suspect to 'go critical' and melt through the basement.

TEPCO deludes itself

TEPCO deludes itself

FD-3, 5X5 MOX/CORIUM configurations from FDU-3

The Fukushima Daiichi Unit-3 probably retains a mixture of MOX fuel and Corium: A) in the (shattered) reactor, B) in the (heavily-damaged) ‘Containment-Vessel’, C) in the (heavily-damaged) ‘Containment-Building’, as well as D) a corium meltdown burning into the earth. The balance of the FDU-3 MOX fuel and fission products were E) scattered to the 4-Winds, in the atomic explosion on or about March 14, 2011.

It would be ‘helpful’ to have an accurate accounting of the present FDU-3 MOX/Corium distribution in these 5 broad categories. Recent events clearly illustrate that; TEPCO personnel continue to delude themselves. They are not merely lying to the rest of the earth. A rigorous Fuel/Corium INVENTORY is needed for FDU-3.

Controlled, multiple circulation flows may be possible; and would likely be superior, as the various MOX/Corium masses have significantly different thermodynamic and fission concerns. Demolition and/or Salvage operations, of the reactor, ‘metal-containment-vessel’ and/or ‘containment-building-structure’, may be appropriate and/or ESSENTIAL at this juncture.

Denial is NOT a River in Egypt.

WHEN?

Well written news accounts include WHEN. When did the low LEVEL Alarms Sound?

WHEN does the reactor water LEVEL drop to dangerously LOW levels? WHEN does the ground water intrusion VOLUME peak?

Preliminary Hypothesis: Let us posit that:

The corium coolant water drops below acceptable levels at LOW tide.

Ground Water intrusion peaks at HIGH Tide, and that GROUTING is most effective at HIGH tide.

Drill & Run Pipe

Time is of the essence:

One essential early CCCC step, is to run cased ‘stinger pipes’ toward the corium at various depths and angles.

In view of the radioactivity levels, and rapidly changing thermodynamic regimes; multi-wall thickness casing, wellheads, blowout preventers, choke and kill lines should be deployed; again at various depths and angles.

Some of the upper level stingers may be initiated with boring equipment from mining, pipeline and road construction projects.

The deeper, more vertical, directional ‘relief bores’ will require O&G drilling rigs, including mobile offshore drilling units (MODU).

Some of these wellbores will be needed for routine cement ‘squeeze jobs’ (grouting). Others may suddenly become essential primary corium cooling conduits.

‘Step on It!’

Time is of the essence!

It is advisable to include ‘Mother Russia’, in the ‘Solutions Provider Team’ for the RAPIDLY ESCALATING corium cooling and containment challenge (CCCC) at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

The CCCC is two-pronged, assessment and an effective plan of action.

Each Prong IMMEDIATELY REQUIRES the best engineers, physicists AND drilling personnel on Planet Earth.

Breaking the corium into removable chunks, in a (relatively) contained manner, may also require military capabilities.

Russian problem solving capabilities will substantially improve the rapidly dwindling chance for success.

The Fukushima CCCC does not allow time for delay … or social pretense.

Time is of the essence!

Corium Subsurface Depth Measurement

Corium subsurface depth

If the effective subsurface depth of the corium is presently unknown ... as expected …

Might I suggest, Schlumberger (www.slb.com) Schlumberger underground survey (logging) tools include radiation (gamma), thermal and various other useful parameters for determining subsurface depth.

It is advisable to include the ‘best in the business’, in the rapidly augmenting ‘Solutions Provider Team’ for the ongoing ‘Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Containment Challenge’.

It is assumed that the rapid response capabilities of Team USA and Team Japan are adequate for the task at hand.

Else, Team Homo Sapiens may be in serious jeopardy
