"Environment Minister Goshi Hosono says Japan will send a team of experts to the US to study the impact of debris from last year's tsunami in northeastern Japan.
An estimated 1.5-million tons of debris is drifting in the Pacific. Some of this material was recently washed ashore on the US Pacific coast, and its disposal has become an issue.
Hosono said on Friday that the government will send a fact-finding team of experts to the United States next month. The members are from JEAN, a Tokyo-based non-governmental organization that deals with ocean waste problems.
Hosono said addressing the issue of tsunami debris hitting overseas coasts is quite important, and the government will help affected areas to tackle the problem.
