Isotopics Publishes New Note Re: Elevated Pu239,240 in Japan
May 3, 2012
Isotopics Note 2012-02 has been published today. With this note we introduce our approach to inventory calculations of nuclear installations.
We calculated the inventory of the Fukushima-Dai-ichi nuclear power plant Units 1 -4 for selected radionuclides, by using an “inventory standard”. We applied the results to our source apportionment method for the assessment of the contribution of the power plant to environmental contamination with plutonium.
Our investigation points to the preliminary conclusion, that the reactor cores and not the spent fuel pools of the Fukushima nuclear power plant are responsible for the recently established elevated 239Pu and 240Pu contamination in Japan.
