How come there is no fall out on the West Coast any more?

Without comprehensive testing of eggs, melons, peaches, berries, grass fed beef from West Coast, Chicken meat, etc I cannot believe we here on the West Coast are free from fall out from Fukushima!!

The three core meltdowns and melt throughs(?) and number 4 spf. are still emitting radiation. Where is it going folks. Into some black hole? or is it now out of sight and out of mind yet deadly radiating us with low levels for years to come. Is this the new National Security to not release any data-complete black out.
I want more testing from Brawm.

Its still in tropsphere for long time

If u want a scientific answer on what has been released and why its tapered down take a look at my link .one point that needs adressing, explanation this iodine release was the major focus of news -nuclear pr - media reports in the USA when in fact "there is typically usually ten times more Caesium than iodine ,usually all of the Iodine is released as caesium iodide and the rest of caesium as caesium hydroxide."pg63 fission product release

Could Brawm team comment on this topic

The comments on this topic have been all over the place.
It would be good to have the professional expertise of the
Brawm team on what's happening over there at Fukushima
where we are getting now, supposedly negligible fall out here on
the West Coast.

The results of nuclide analyses of radioactive materials in the air at the site of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (112th release)"

From there, you can pull a PDF that shows the air sampling results from the grounds of the plant. Results are in an bq/cm3, not the bq/m3 we are used to looking at, but in any case, the recent ones have been mostly non-detect, most tellingly for I-131. We can expect to see the Cs isotopes from dust blowing around, but the abscence of I-131 means this thing is wound down.

Atmospheric emissions from FK are negligible compared to early releases.

Now we live with the junk that came over in that wave, which is bad, but not end-of-the-world bad.

Forgot the map. Here it is.

Here is an animation tracking application which illustrates how many earthquakes have occurred off of the East coast of Japan since March 11, 2011. The full count as of today is just over 1400 quakes.

(sorry about that)

Is that really the scientific way to think about 'releases'?

Have you ever heard of 'liquefaction'?

So help me out here...who is the authority on what is happening beneath the surface of those reactors? How do we know that they are not completely exposed to the sea? What evidence do we have of that? Were those reactors and accompanying fuel equipped with GPS monitors/sensors?

If the reactors and their accompanying fuel ARE exposed to the sea, what repercussions will that have upon our hydrologic cycle? (water cycle)

http://www.sawater.com.au/NR/rdonlyres/657AC917-D6E3-4E55-AAD1-38119A0AC...

What repercussions will that, in turn, have upon our food cycle, crops, etc?

Isn't there some type of 'sustainable organic movement' in Northern California? (I seem to recall hearing something about that.) These organic growers and farmers are very good people from what I understand.

Of course, they don't wield the power which the NRC and the Nuclear Industry at large does, but they are good people, who have been leading the country in a direction of environmental balance, who now find themselves trapped within this mess, as we all are:

They promised me the end of

They promised me the end of the world. Where is it?

Are you still drinking out

Are you still drinking out of leaching plastic bottles?

I only use glass bottles

I only use glass bottles made before 1944 and I moved to Patagonia a day after the first explosion at Fukushima. My kids are living out from vitamin supplements. I can taste metal in the air. The clouds have funny colors. I'm nauseous since I was born.

Well the cores are melted at

Well the cores are melted at the bottom of containment. So they are not releasing radioactivity into the air. That is why we are no longer seeing it here in the US.

Whoa biggest crock I've seen

Whoa biggest crock I've seen on here in a long while.

Author, care to identify yourself?

the levels of radiation in

the levels of radiation in the buildings are so so astronomically high that workers cannot be in
there for more than minutes at a time and these buildings are open to the atmosphere and must
be emitting radiation. Also Tepco cam is being manipulated so we do not see the full steam and
smoke events going on over there. The jet stream is moving air to the west coast of America.
Am I to believe there is no radiation coming over here. Soothing words to tranquilize the people!
In due time it will be revealed there was and is a massive cover up going on. The truth always
comes out.

my god, not everything is a

my god, not everything is a cover up. Now TEPCO is not the most truthful of companies, but the truth is that its hard to figure out what is happening when you can't go in. The inside of the buildings may be contaminated by isotopes, but that doesn't mean there is stuff getting emitted into the atmosphere. The buildings may be emitting radiation, that doesn't mean they are emitting radioactivity. Where is your evidence that the TEPCO cam is being manipulated? Speculation doesn't help anyone.

my god not everything...

I do tend to agree with the above poster, that if the buildings are open and emitting steam and smoke, don't forget the pools are exposed as well, then it is common sense to extract that the air / atmosphere is getting contaminated.

Thus the air will continue to travel through out the world, including the US. In other words until Fukushima is sealed up in a concrete tomb there will be emissions that are constant and damaging over time. Not to mention what has / is already falling out right in own backyards, on our heads, on our farms, playgrounds ect.

Sorry it is a reality. I don't buy the "rosy sunglasses approach."

Is TEPCO doing a cover up? IMHO probably yes they are . Why not ? They are in over their heads and have already admitted to providing false information about many many accounts of data, and internet blackouts. Why is a camera rigged a certain way so hard to accept. It probably is true given their track record with this accident. Either way the emissions are still coming.

Sources

Agreed. The reactors have essentially become "fixed sources", kind of like Cobalt 60 cancer treatment machines. The source(s)of the radiation on site are very strong, but are not being blown to smithereens all over the place,so they are not being distributed via the winds. At least not in the same volume, by any measure. Also, what escaped in the beginning were massive amounts of airborne fission products like Xenon, Iodine, and Cesium, because the fission process had only recently been stopped. Now that fission has halted these elements are no longer being generated.
Be thankful for small favors!

Re: Sources

Umm...I think we need a nuclear scientist in the room to comment on the statement that "Now that fission has halted these elements are no longer being generated." (and please feel free to give your feedback on my comments below as well. Thanks!)

I seem to recall reading (was it on nuclear expert Arne Gundersen's fairewinds.com or was it on Physicsforum.com?) that the 3 meltdowns have created blobs of continuously fissioning products which have melted through and possibly OUT of their entire containments. With water being sprayed into each of the damaged buildings, some of which is likely also reaching these fissioning blobs, the steam being released continuously (which you can see in the live TEPCO cams) must be highly radioactive.

Anyway, this is where the major problem lies for the clean up crew. No one knows how to handle actively fissioning blobs safely...the technology hasn't been invented yet. (IMHO, a crime of the highest proportions that we would give our blessing--and our tax payer money--to anyone to create something that has the risk of creating such a lethal, long-lasting and uncontrollable result which no one knows how to remedy...)

Physicsforums.com has a great thread discussing this (the comments are mainly from nuclear physics professors and students.)

Here's one interesting thread (found here: http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=481674):

Question: "I don't understand. How can a nuclear plant accident produce more radioactive fallout than an atmospheric nuclear explosion? No nuclear test has ever triggered panic around the global fearing radioactive dust spread by wind."

Answer: "A typical nuclear reactor fissions as many atoms as a nuclear bomb every 4 hours. A bomb is made up of a few kg of fuel, a reactor has as much as 100 tons. There are a lot more fission products in reactor fuel than a bomb explosion."

And here:

Question: "But supposed the controls rods were not inserted and the fuel rods melt and become molten and there is a tough cement underneath that prevent further falling underneath the plant. Would the uranium still fission when it's already in the molten state or would fission only occur when the uranium is solid?"

Answer: "From the continuity of matter property, what goes into a system, must come out elsewhere if mass in the system is constant. So, if some seawater goes in, it must come out somewhere as water or steam. It is the steam that is occasionally vented to keep the pressure down. However, this means that the system is no longer closed to the environment, and some fission products, mostly gases Xe and Kr, and perhaps some volatiles, e.g., I, will escape to the atmosphere.

The objective now is to cool the reactor core and minimize the release of radioactive substances to the environment." (Obviously stated before the confirmation of the three meltdowns).

Multiply the "100 tons" number mentioned above by three (the number of reactors which blew up at Fukushima) and you can see why those of us who live on the West Coast (in direct line of the Pacific Jet Stream) have every right to be concerned and to question those who claim no more radioactive releases are making their way into the Pacific Jet Stream and coming our way...We want 100% reassurance and TRUTHFUL answers and transparency and verification by independent groups of people about the "official statements" being made. As Obama promised his administration would be one of transparency. Where is the transparency of these statements? The statements may be all true, but please, show us proof through independent oversight and verification.

Perhaps the ongoing releases into the atmosphere is in fact why the DOE and the WA State DOH are doing aerial testing for gamma radiation on the ground in King and Pierce Counties of Western Washington this month, from July 11-28, results of which won't be available until the end of the year (too late for local residents to do much about it if they do find anything) and as they say, some of the data may be withheld for security purposes. Sadly, these kinds of vague statements don't help create any greater sense of trust by the general public...

There is no more fission

There is no more fission occurring. These reactors are designed so that it is extremely difficult to get criticality. Only when conditions are perfect will there be any criticality and fission. What is occurring is the decay of the fission products. All the short lived isotopes are gone now, what is left are the long lived ones that are still decaying into a stable isotope.

Were these reactors designed

Were these reactors designed to melt down and through in the event of an emergency?

For one thing, it doesn't

For one thing, it doesn't match up with the JNN cam.

Which camera is operated by those with a bigger conflict of interest?

Where can you see these

Where can you see these cameras?

Radiation cameras?

The cameras cannot show radiation.
